Just for Thought (6)

Where do you purchase your books?
Online or Stores?

This has become a growing thought for me.  And a new thing as well.  I like to purchase my books at the local book store.  Call me goofy if you want, but I love going through the store and staring at the shelves.  The books are just wonderful things for me to look at.  I pull ones off the shelves, look at the covers, read the descriptions, and thumb through them.  This was one of the best ways to find that diamond in the rough for me.  I loved taking a book that looks good and sounds good and even sounds good from a paragraph or two from the inside, home with me.  One that I'd not heard of before.  And to mention I'm supporting the store to stay open so I can keep doing this.

But...

I've found I find LOADS of books that are NOT on the shelves, in which I would completely LOVE online.  Yep, you all have helped me find this and figure it out.  Thank you to all my online blogger friends and authors.  I now am starting to become an online purchaser.  I purchase from different publisher sites and book distributors as they carry the books my book store does not have.  I enjoy it!  And the idea of coming home to seeing the books on my door step waiting for me is wondrous.  This is a growing new for me.

I do still buy at the store or even order them at the store so the store gets credit and stays open, but I also purchase books they don't have online at other venues.  Wonderful places them all!

So what about you?  Where or how do you purchase your books?

  1. I hate to say it, but most of my book purchases are online these days. Not just because I have an ereader, but because all we have in my area are chain bookstores, so I don't feel guilty about paying less and going through Amazon. Now, if we had some wonderfully unique, quirky, independent bookstores in my area, I'd have had them move a bed in there for me already!

  2. I LOVE LOVE LOVE going to a book store... I love discovering new covers, sifting through the seemingly endless shelves, and being able to walk out with a new book burning though the bag, BUT there's that whole "I can't control myself in a book store and end up buying 50 dollars worth of new books" thing and my credit card really suffers from it. Online shopping is a bit safer for me, because the book isn't tangible, I have not picked it up and fallen love. Online, it is still a picture.

  3. Unfortunately, I do buy most of my books online for the reason that my credit card rewards me with Amazon gift certificates. Plus the closest bookstore to me, which is in the next town, just closed two months ago. I do buy books in stores but only if it's for a gift that I need right away.

  4. Most of my books I buy from stores, since I too love going and perusing the shelves and seeing what titles or covers catch my eye. It's a treat, and I love walking out of a bookstore with a heavy bag filled with goodies for me to read over the coming days.

That being said, though, I do still buy books online. Usually books that I can't find easily at my local bookstore, or books that are on sale at Amazon or other sites, since I love a good deal! But for the most part, most of the books that I buy I get from brick-and-mortar stores.

  5. The only local book store we have is a used store. The selections mediocre and they have a cat(I'm allergic), so I do most of my shopping on-line.

  6. I am a huge fan of bookstores but recently have found that the prices are so different compared to what you find online. If there's a sale on something I got to the bookstore, otherwise, I shop at Book Depository. Also, the town I live in only as a used bookstore, so I do try to browse there; I love seeing the older books up for sale. There is also a Half Price Books close to my work that has great prices, so I try to pop in there every now and then. Great question!

  7. I do both. However, I have been purchasing more on-line lately. It's just so darn convenient!

  8. Lori Strongin - Oh, don't feel bad saying you shop on line. There is no right or wrong answer here, just curious and for thought. But I understand the chain book stores thing. I think that is mostly what we have here too. And a few used book stores, which are nice to visit. ;) Thank you!

Mflick1 - lol. I hear you on the bill at the register for the books. :) Shopping on line does seem to make that easier on the pocket book. Thank you!

StephanieD - Ooooo, that is soooo cool that you get rewarded for shopping with the place you like to shop. :) Cool idea! Oh wow. That is a far distance to go to the store too. Thank you!

Bibliotropic - Thank you. :) Sounds like you are a lot like me with the shopping, both places these days. :)

Carolsnotebook - I could see the used store not having all the books I want. I would definitely be buying online as well. :)

Jackie - You are really right on the prices thing with online and in stores. I forgot about that these days too. Thanks for stopping by to chat! :)

Melissa (Books&Things) - lol. I've noticed I've started online too. It strange how you start changing over slowly. :) Thank you!

  9. I own a kindle so I buy books for that once in a while. I didn't buy any books last week since I'm overwhelmed with review books on my kindle right now.

I also buy books at the bookstore (B&N), but only books that Todd will read too. If he isn't going to read them they end up as giveaways on my blog since I don't think we need the physical book of books that we aren't both interested in.

  10. Wonderbunny - I'm hearing so many are loving there Kindles and ereaders for this reason. But that is a great idea to get books you both can read. :) Unfortunately I'm really the only one in the house that reads. But I get my own space for me and my books as no one will bother me. ;D Thank you for stopping by!

  11. Always the store. If they don't have it in stock, I order it from them.
