My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Veronica holds one of the top spots in my book for narrators. She's amazing to listen to as she voices each character with a different voice, personality, tone, and life. And this is a large cast of characters to do that with. This makes it so much more enjoyable of a listen for me, keeping me drawn to the characters along with the emotion present in them. Always a great pleasure to listen to Veronica!

We are back with Kelsey!! Kelsey has become my favorite character in this series. She is like Wonder Woman with her implants. She's bold and smart. She usually has trouble finding her everywhere she goes. lol. Kelsey does make for an interesting adventure wherever she goes. Then there are those that are with her. I love the whole crew!

This book picks up with Kelsey again. I had to work my brain to remember where we left Kelsey as it was two books ago when we left her. Kelsey and her crew are in a sort of a pickle with where they are and a time frame that they have to work in as things are sparking in the universe. And they may have helped start the sparks with their actions.

This book continues with Terry's pattern of writing. We start the book with learning where we are and making friends, along with a few enemies. We start to see how things are on this planet and with our crew who needs help. Then when Kelsey and her crew make a move, it's with force and action. This brings the fighting and fast movement in the second half of the book.

It seems many planets and bands of people have the same idea. There are those that are tired of what the AI's and Singularity are doing to their people. We find groups that are ready to rebel. I love that if these fractions act on their own, the likelihood of survival is very tiny. But with Kelsey and Jared out in the universe visiting new planets, it brings a small flicker of hope that they just might be able to work together to win the war that's coming.

With each book I feel there is a bigger event coming. The more Kelsey or Jared interact with people in the universe, it feels they are growing alliances and finding people who will fight as well. I'm looking forward to when they all come together and the big battle for freedom happens.

This series is classified, in some venues, in Military Science Fiction. It's not a heavy military or science fiction read. There is so much interaction with the characters and the situations they find themselves in is what guides them to act. There is action and battles but the story is more. I would HIGHLY recommend the series to many people who enjoy space operas.

Audio Book Review: Alter

Alter

By:  Jeremy Robinson

Publish Date:  December 1, 2018, Audiobook Release February 2, 2019

Format:  Audiobook - 9 hrs 43 mins
Narrated By:  Luke Daniels

Genre:  Thriller, Adventure

Series:  Stand-alone

Impression:  Lost in the jungle can give a new perspective on life.

Synopsis:
Stranded in the Amazon rainforest, a lost man fights for survival and discovers that the root of evil doesn't just reside in the world's darkest corners, but inside the hearts of all mankind.

Dr. Gregory Zekser is on a mission to visit the furthest reaches of the Amazon, providing medical aid to recently contacted tribes. As a general practitioner and food pantry director, his life in Massachusetts can be chaotic, but serving people is what he does best, and he doesn't mind sacrificing his personal life to help others, at home or half way around the world.

But any hope of returning home to his wife, daughter, and comfortable life are eradicated when the small plane carrying him back to civilization plummets into the unknown depths of the jungle. Swallowed by endless green, with both pilots dead, Greg struggles to stay alive in a world that wants to infect his body, suck him dry, and eat him whole. Ravaged by illness and dehydration, and stalked by a ruthless predator, Greg's life teeters on the edge of oblivion until a scream lets him know that he is not alone.

His first encounter with an uncontacted tribe ends in death--the first of many. Driven to the brink of madness, and then beyond, Greg finds himself caught up in a feud that existed before his arrival, but will only end with his death--or his enemies'.

First Sentence:
A tree branch is the first thing I see upon waking.

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Luke Daniels is a new narrator for me. I wasn't sure how I'd like his narration. When the story started he felt vocally stiff for me. I know Greg is a stiff character with his speaking and word choices, but I still wasn't sure. As the story went, Luke grew on me and Greg seemed to relax into the jungle he's lost in which was reflected in Luke's voice. When it came to voicing other characters, I didn't have the strained feel that comes with Greg, so I know Luke is in character for Greg.

The word choices and thinking process of Greg fits his profession and character. These are specific in the beginning as Greg is a product of society. Greg still has mannerisms of modern society but he is more and becomes more as his story goes on in the jungle with what he lives through. It's interesting how Greg's thinking changes as he faces a new world where current beliefs and modern items don't exist. Greg, who's a doctor who saves people and never harmed anyone is faced with things that happen in nature and has to make a choice in what he will do to survive.

There are a few gross moments. I would not want to see those! We start the book with a moment I really would not want to see or live through, when the plane crashes. Jeremy's writing brings a dreadful image to mind as I listened to the story.

The story... It's a calmer story for me. And that's not saying that it's a slow story. Jeremy has many things happening to Greg as the story goes, there's so much in a jungle that can be dangerous along with simply trying to figure out how to survive. The story is focused on the events Greg comes across and how he reacts to survive in the Amazon jungle. There are dangers, but the story isn't what I usually listen/read. That doesn't change that the story is well written.

Then there was a twist added to the characters. This picked up the plot for me, drawing me in to see what happens. The hunted become the hunters, determined to survive at all costs. I found I was gripped by the book at this point and wanted to know what happened. I was pulling for the characters to do what they must.

I have faith in Jeremy to give me something different in his books, and he did. Jeremy always adds something in that's a twist, either to the characters or the world that the characters have to react to. I love getting this in his books as it adds a new level to the story.

By the end of the book, I was beyond invested into the story and characters. The end even brought tears to my eyes as things settle into place.

This was one heck of a journey for the characters. Greg is a product of his surroundings, and he adapts to those surroundings to survive. But aren't we all?

The story really hit the heart for me. It felt to bring to heart that there is more to life than work and money. There is love and others around you. There is the planet that needs to survive as well.

Balticon 53 - Challenge Accepted

It was another great and successful Balticon for me!

I had a bit of a stumbling start this year. As I stepped off the elevator from the parking garage, my bags draped over my shoulders and suitcase in tow, I noticed there was something wrong with my sandal. My foot kept sliding off the side of my shoe and I was walking on the side of my foot. My shoe broke. (On Facebook my best friend, autocorrect, fixed shoe to show when I posted about it.) I couldn't walk with my normal stride, and needed to get to the counter to check in. So, I held my head high and did a step, scoot sashay through the lobby. No one's ever there... Yep, I saw Veronica and Paul Cooley. I held my head high as I waved and kept step, scooting to the counter. I got to my room, safely, and changed shoes.

All was good. I had a great weekend. I was on panels and listened to panels. I got to listen to podcasts live. It was great seeing and talking to numerous amazing people. I even won little Mimi (my yellow dinosaur) and Roger, Roger (my purple dinosaur) at two different ScoTori podcast panels. There is a story behind each name, of course. So much great awesomeness with talented and amazing people that have accepted me into their con family. Great family love feeling.

So many great conversations. I'm thankful for every conversation I had, but there's a few kind people who let me babble on about things I needed to let go of as it was gnawing at me. Thank you! In all the talking I did this weekend, I also babbled on about the writing projects I have in the works. And I've now been challenged to be actively publishing or seeking an agent by next Balticon. I have one year to get through one of the books and pursue getting it out in the world. I accepted this challenge. Now I have to get working.

This Balticon feels like it was a milestone for me. I came to realize some health issues were weighing on my mind and I needed to get past them and I've decided to move forward in writing items. In a way I feel freer. And a few creative thoughts have sparked. I'm feeling good about what the year will bring.

Now to get finished with a book and shop it around. Wish me luck!

Audio Book Review: Ancient Echoes

Ancient Echoes

By:  Joanne Pence

Publish Date:  April 2, 2013, Audiobook Release December 26, 2018

Format:  Audiobook - 12 hrs 17 mins
Narrated By:  Tim Paige

Genre:  Paranormal

Series:  1st in Ancient Secrets series

Impression:  Old tales have truth to them, and their own story.

Synopsis:
Over two hundred years ago, a covert expedition shadowing Lewis and Clark disappeared into the wilderness of Central Idaho. Now, seven anthropology students and their professor vanish in the same area. The key to finding them lies in an ancient secret, one involving alchemy, gold, and immortality...a secret that men throughout history have sought to unveil.

Michael Rempart is a brilliant archeologist whose colorful and controversial career has earned him admiring fans and implacable foes, but he is plagued by a troubling sense of the supernatural and a mysterious spiritual intuitiveness. Joining Rempart in this adventure are a CIA consultant on paranormal phenomena, a washed-up local sheriff, and a former scholar of Egyptology. All must overcome their personal demons as they attempt to save the students and, ultimately, the world.

From the Journal of Francis Masterson, 1806--

All hope is gone. Evil is victorious.

In the time I have remaining I will, herewith, impart a tale so filled with Dread and Terror that my heart overflows with immeasurable Sorrow to tell it. It began with the highest of Good Will and Promise and, on my part, great Excitement. I can only trust to Providence that one day this small account which I leave in a land of unimaginable desolation and Wildness, may be discovered, and that it will serve to warn others of the wickedness that may ensnare Good men.

Ours was to be a Secret Expedition...

First Sentence:
Michael Rempart flung back the thick, musty brown quilt, rekindled the metal stove's dying dung fire, and dressed in heavy woolens and an insulated jacket before stepping out of the small ger.

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Tim Paige narrates this story, which is a first for me listening to him. He does well and gets a chance to add hints of accents for characters. It's nice when a narrator can differentiate characters by voice and accent, and Tim gets to do that here.

We start with three people/groups in three different areas of the world that are working on related history. They don't know it yet, but they are connected. There's Michael Rempart, Charlotte Reed, and Lionel Rempart who's with his assistant and college students. Each chapter with each of these characters digs their hole of danger deeper and deeper. I am enjoying how things are escalating in their lives and events they fight through as each is a little different.

This story reads like a suspense read as we get the story from different characters, filling us in on what's happening. There's people who come together because they are involved for what they may know while another is trying to kill them. Then there's the people doing the killing. Yes, we get a few views from the people doing the killing too. We also get to see the story by the college students if they separate, because they find something new and important to the world. It's great! I was never confused about where I was in the story.

The main characters who's eyes we see through are: Charlotte Reed, Lionel Rempart, Michael Rempart, Jianjun, Devlin, Ted, Jake Sullivan, Derek Hammil, Jennifer Vandenburg, and a few others. I know, it looks like a lot. But it's really not! We get the important moments with the characters that impacts them or all of them.

I enjoyed how I felt reading this book. I felt relaxed yet on edge with worry for the characters. The college kids in the strange, unknown woods had me worried of what will happen. Charlotte I worried for her life as she seems to know pieces about alchemy that's needed, but someone's out to stop her from realizing it and it's connection. Lionel Rempart is obsessed and I was ready to slap him. lol. Michael Rempart has a drive like his brother, but there seems to be a touch of rational to him. A touch. Derek is just a bad person. He's out doing his job as a mercenary and he scares me as he seems to have no care about others. Jianjun is pulling information for Michael and is getting pieces to him as they get and pull it all together.

Most of all, I was curious as to if there was any truth to the old tales told by the elders in Idaho about the woods. Did the legends happen, as they are told? And what could we find here? Also, what Michael found in Mongolia...Wow, I'm with Michael on needed to know there too. Then we venture into the woods of Idaho, and find out about the history connected to all the pieces our character carry.

Once we get through to the unknown place, I have a few tiny bugs with the book. I don't know how much time's passed, how long the characters have been here. When in the village, it feels like it's more than a few days or even weeks, but with those outside the village it feels like it's only been a day or two. Also, it feels the story slows here as there's interactions between the characters but I don't feel we move forward with the plot as we had been doing, and I think this is what makes the time frame feel longer than what it really is. When we were in the village, I wanted to push the story forward faster. Then, we start to learn details that feels to pick up the pace again, as we head into the ending.

I picked up on some character changes from early on. It seems that some of the characters are playing a "part" as they suddenly change what they are doing or thinking in the story. Almost like they are two different people. In the end this is explained.

The book comes together in the end with explaining the alchemy and the unknown place along with what happened to the different characters leading into them coming together. I'd be curious to continue on in the series with Michael Rempart. I don't know if any other characters we meet here will show up, but it would be neat to see them if they do.

Sunday Post #118

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It's a chance to share news ~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share new about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I know it's been a long time, but I didn't realize it'd been THAT long! I'm so sorry! Over a month of no Sunday Posts.
Life has been moving forward and we've been busy on Sunday's. Lots happening. All good, of course. I don't even know where to start with what I've been doing. lol. There was Easter, which fell on my mom's birthday this year. So Easter was a little more than usual. Then I went for a photo walk at a local trail and took some flower photos. It was fun and I tried a few techniques that are new to me. Balticon, a science fiction/fantasy convention I go to yearly has come and passed. Time with family has been a big thing. I've been trying to adapt to new medicines that I've been feeling tired from.
So, here I am today. Hope you are all doing well.
I'm trying to work out a schedule when I'm home in the evenings, but I'm not home every night anymore. Between taking photos, photo group meetings, and life things it's hard. I want to write and get a book released or in the process of.
Insomnia and Seven More Short Stories by Jeremy Robinson
"I enjoyed all the stories, a few more than others, but the whole collection is a great addition to the shelf. I was not let down in a few cases as Jeremy has a way of giving a spin on the story I didn't expect. Very enjoyable collection! I got a feel for each story as I listened, something deeper than what is being told."
The Haunting of Hillwood Farm by Kathryn Knight
"The story has me interested with events that are happening, directing us to what we are to think. I'm kept curious as to the haunting and why."
More Bedtime Stories for Cynics by Kirsten Kearse
PICK UP AT AMAZON
Goodreads Synopsis:
Nick Offerman and his posse of high-profile guests present this series of 12 short stories written in the style of classic kid’s tales, but with a decidedly adult approach.
If children's literature is any guide, we should all be able to magically fall asleep simply by saying goodnight to the things we can see from our beds. But any adult knows that our work anxieties and shameful memories would rather stay up all night and chat. That’s where Offerman and Co. come in—with clever and occasionally downright dark parodies of the classic kids genre. What really happened after Snow White died, from the perspective of the one medically trained dwarf? A naive wizard professor reports back from the trenches of an underprivileged school of magic. A middle-aged man is haunted by the voices of his own aging body. The stories will make you laugh, cry and probably squirm a little.
Performers include: Patrick Stewart, Alia Shawkat, Jane Lynch, Aparna Nancherla, Harry Goaz, Mike Birbiglia, Ellen Page, Rachel Dratch, Gary Anthony Williams, Nicole Byer, and Matt Walsh.
Ever since her best friend, Anna, drowned, Evie has been an outcast in her small fishing town. A freak. A curse. A witch.
A girl with an uncanny resemblance to Anna appears offshore and, though the girl denies it, Evie is convinced that her best friend actually survived. That her own magic wasn’t so powerless after all. And, as the two girls catch the eyes—and hearts—of two charming princes, Evie believes that she might finally have a chance at her own happily ever after.
But her new friend has secrets of her own. She can’t stay in Havnestad, or on two legs, unless Evie finds a way to help her. Now Evie will do anything to save her friend’s humanity, along with her prince’s heart—harnessing the power of her magic, her ocean, and her love until she discovers, too late, the truth of her bargain.
Naturally, Melcher's waiting with a new assignment that he swears won't interfere with college classes. Why don't I believe him? He could have at least warned me about my new roommate. Hell to the No! And guess which fanged fiend shows up at my doorstep? If only vamps required permission to enter.
Also, it turns out text flirting while at boot camp has consequences. I must have been in the desert too long because suddenly my goofy mentor looks like a bronzed Titan god with lips that could divide and conquer.
College is starting, and so is my undercover assignment at a network of swanky parties known as "Tastings" for high rolling vamps who like their blood laced with fine wine.
I'm not the only one on the prowl. An underground investigation is underway to find out who killed one of Anchorage’s most prominent vampires. Guess who is the prime suspect?
That's just the beginning. Things are about to get really messy with a side helping of messed up!
