Movie Review: Captain America

Captain America: The First Avenger

Released:  2011

Rated:  PG-13

Genre:  Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Length:  124mins = 2hrs 4mins

Recommendation:  If you enjoy watching the Beginnings of Marvel heroes, yes watch it, but it seemed a little slower moving than others.  Not bad, just slower paced.

Synopsis:
It is 1942, America has entered World War II, and sickly but determined Steve Rogers is frustrated at being rejected yet again for military service.  Everything changes when Dr. Erksine recruits him for the secret Project Rebirth.  Proving his extraordinary courage, wits and conscience, Rogers undergoes the experiment and his weak body is suddenly enhanced into the maximum human potential.  When Dr. Erksine is then immediately assassinated by an agent of Nazi Germany's head of its secret HYDRA research department, Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull, Rogers is left as a unique man who is initially misused as a propaganda mascot.  However, when his comrades need him, Rogers goes on a successful adventure that truly makes him Captain America and his war against Schmidt begins.

My Thoughts & Summary:
We start at present time, where a strange craft is found, frozen and an amazing discovery frozen inside it.  Then we jump to 1942, and America is in World War II.  Steve Rogers, a scroonie yet determined young man wants to fight for his country.  Dr. Erksine sees the determination and loyalty in Steve, offering him a chance of a lifetime.  Rogers agrees, if he can help his friends and country.  Dr. Erksine is assassinated, and Rogers goes on tour as a spokes person for the war, in costume and all.  When his tour takes him over seas to the soldiers, he learns he's not as accepted by them.  Until his closest friend and platoon are lost to the Nazi's.  Rogers knows he's stronger and faster than given credit for, so takes on a mission of his own to save his friend and any men held hostage.  In doing so, Steve gains respect and seen in a new light... Captain America is truly born.

I wasn't sure what I was going to see with this movie.  I was a little surprised it takes place in 1940's.  I should have looked into it more, maybe. ;) but I forgot about it and decided I wanted to see it before The Avengers came out.  This movie is about the birth of a strong comic character.  How Captain America came to be, his beginnings.  I did like the way they portrayed the character.  They really built Steve Rogers as a caring character, and perfect to be Captain America.

It was a little on the slower side for us.  We enjoyed it, and know it's a build-up to more Marvel movies to come, even in the end it left me with a feel more movies are to come.

We all liked watching it.  My son enjoyed the ending, hoping for more movies to come.  My husband liked the story and growth of Captain America, and the action of when he came into his being, but felt it was slower paced than other superhero movies we've seen.

Over all, good hero movie to watch with the family.

    1. Robyn, I can't wait for the Avengers either. I told the husband and kid about the commercial for it and I think they blew me off. But when they saw the commercial they were all about seeing it when it comes out. :D Thank you!

    2. It will be awesome to see Cleveland in there. :)

I'm still mad I couldn't go to Cleveland any of the times they were there to watch them film. Despite the fact I don't even live a half hour from there, I never had a chance.

I missed seeing Chris and Chris, haha.

    1. Melliane, this one was a little slower moving for us. The best parts where in the end. But it was the story of how Captain America came to be in his position. We were expecting more too. I think after seeing Xmen and such. But we are very much looking forward to The Avengers too. :D Thank you!

  6. It kind of felt like a prequel to The Avengers movie more than a movie in itself.

    1. Ryan, you are so right about feeling like a prequel. This movie was the beginning of Captain America, and prepping us for what's to come. :)
