Just for Thought (5)

How do you pick what to buy?

Last week we talked about that gnawing need to go buy books, even through you have plenty at home to keep you reading.  This week I'm curious how you pick the book to buy from that miles long WANT list.  Which ones do I buy now and which ones do I wait on?

I'm not sure how I do it.  I think in part it's what the store has on it's shelves as compared to what's on my want list.  That and for some reason I have books that just call to me.  You know, those ones you see and just can't quit thinking about no matter what books you read.  These are the ones that are destine to be in my presence. ;D  But I am to own and enjoy.

I've found I've had a lot of the 'destine' books as of late.  And they have been amazing reads too!  I love when this happens.  But these destine books have been ones I've had to order off line because the local Express book store doesn't carry them.  But I usually have a book in mind that has been calling to me for a while and if the store has it I pick it up, and sometimes even additional books grab my attention while there. ;)

So how is it you pick which books you are going to buy over all the ones on the WANT list?

  1. I just ran a poll about this on a YA forum I'm on. Teen readers seems drawn in the most both by covers and by recommendations form friends/bookstore staff. For me, though, it's the book blurb and whether the author can show me a new twist on the trope their writing.

  2. For me certain books are must have the moment they come out and these are my favorite authors or series. I love knowing that I have a first edition first printing of my favorite authors. Also if I know the author is coming to town then I buy the book. Sometimes I browse but other times I try to look at my to be released and see what I really really want and need.

    I need everything :)

  3. I keep a list on my computer of all the books I want to read with their publication date. Every month I go online to order that month's batch. I look at the books that are published that month and order most of them, but I also look at the other books I've put on the list and might give preference to a couple of those. The other books on the list are the books/series I came across long after their publication and want to give a try or if I liked the first books the other books in that particular series. For instance, I have put Soulless by Gail Carriger on the list and indicated it for purchase next month. If I like it, I might put part 2 on the list for the month after. For me it all depends on which books call to me the most. Books by my favourite authors get ordered before publication, but others may take a little longer to get ordered!

  4. The ones I crave the most are on my to buy list, the ones I want next on my wishlist and then I have all the rest that I am curious about :D Mostly the ones that are part of a series comes first

  5. oh a very interesting question. To be honest I very rarely buy anything off my wish list, I use this more as a list for family/friends in need of ideas on what to buy me for Christmas/birthdays. The books I really, really want I tend to buy/order as a matter of urgency, the ones on my wish list I tend to be able to wait for .... at least for a while.

  6. Honestly? What is on sale. Unless I HAVE to have it, I won't buy unless it is on some sort of discount. Yes, I'm a cheapskate. :)

  7. Funny but I usually buy books I've already read because I adored them and want to re-read. I'll also buy books from series I love and authors I'm a fan of. I'll go for a sale too, but I'm really picky about what to spend money on.

  8. I'm lucky that my want list and review list often intersect. But after review books and those for my book club, I find that I don't have time to read other books, which is just as well.

  9. Interesting topic! Never really thought about it before, but there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to my purchase decisions. I bring home whichever book(s) calls to me the loudest.
