Released: 2011
Rated: R
Genre: Action, Fantasy
Length: 110 mins = 1 hr, 50 min
Recommendation: Yes, great tale of Theseus and the Gods, but beware of blood and dark times.
Synopsis:
Eons after the Gods won their mythic struggle against the Titans, a new evil threatens the land. Mad with power, King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) has declared war against humanity. Amassing a bloodthirsty army of soldiers disfigured by his own hand, Hyperion has scorched Greece in search of the legendary Epirus Bow, a weapon of unimaginable power forged in the heavens by Ares. Only he who possesses this bow can unleash the Titans, who have been imprisoned deep within the walls of Mount Tartaros since the dawn of time and thirst for revenge. In the king's hands, the bow would rain destruction upon mankind and annihilate the Gods. But ancient law dictates the Gods must not intervene in man's conflict. They remain powerless to stop Hyperion...until a peasant named Theseus (Henry Cavill) comes forth as their only hope. Secretly chosen by Zeus, Theseus must save his people from Hyperion and his hordes...
My Thoughts and Summary:
I was nervous going into this movie. I like the idea of gods being involved and seeing the tales on the screen. We only saw one commercial for this and my men wanted to see it. I was thinking I'd start to watch it and leave. Nope, not this time. I really enjoyed this tale.
Now, my son did not watch this one. It's rated R and I made a joke about it when a scene of a woman dropping her robes and crawling into bed with a man came on before starting the DVD. The kid decided to not watch. I will say that is the only sexual thing in this movie, and you see her bare bottom and know very well what they are up to.
The main reason I think this is rated R is for lots of fighting and action, and blood shed, very dark times. But shows the way Theseus' people where treated and his growth from a man into a leader for all and ascension earned to godly status.
I enjoyed learning and questioning the gods involvement, or non-involvement, and the history involved.
The huge fight scene in the end, was amazing!!! When the Gods fight it is Matrix like style, and their gold armor is simply awe watching.
In the end I was amazed with the tale told, the action given, and even left wanting a movie of Theseus' son. Not that the movie ended with a cliffhanger but jumped ahead to show he had a son with potential of a future movie with him and Theseus in it.
The husband found he enjoyed this movie very much as well. There were a few scenes we had to chat about because they happened so fast moving, one of us caught something the other didn't.
Very well done, but be prepared for fighting and blood.
I passed this movie over thinking it was another Connan rip off, sounds like that was a wrong decision... Keeping my eyes peeled now for the DVD :)
ReplyDeleteCherry, I was really surprised with this one. I really was expecting to start the movie and walk away as the men watched it. But I liked the story line of the Gods and Theseus. Thank you. And I do hope you like it if you see it. :)
DeleteIt sure was cool, though what was up with the end and the sky? And why did the gods die, that was silly
ReplyDeleteBlodeuedd, yes it was cool. And yes, I was curious about the gods dying too. That bothered me some. And I think the sky view was where the remaining gods are and where Theseus is now. That the next war will be in the sky? I don't know or if they just over laid the war in the sky like a dream theme for the future. I'm not sure. But was well done before that.
DeleteI don't think I saw this one but I think it can be a movie I could enjoy. What R does mean? We don't have things like that here. Is it like "interdiction to less 16 years old"? We only have things like that. thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteMelliane, I'm glad you like the sounds of this one too. :) Ah, I think you mentioned before about the rating system. We have a few ratings here;
DeleteG, which is cartoon like or for little kids.
PG the next step up
PG-13 best for kids 13 and older
R you have to be an adult or with an adult to get in to see it in theaters, but mostly with violence, language, or sexual content that causes the R rating.
A lot of nothing really, especially these days. :) Thank you!
Having different ratings here am I right in thinking R means its restricted viewing?
ReplyDeleteI generally love anything like this so this should be a winner in our household. Great review Melissa, thanks.
Petty Witter, yes, the rating is just that. For Adults or if a kid an Adult has to be with them to get into the theater to see it.
DeleteGlad you like the sounds of this one. I do hope you enjoy it if you see it. :) Thank you!
Hm... I'm thinking I may enjoy this one. I don't mind a bit of blood, but as long as it doesn't get too gruesome. That is when I close my eyes. :) Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteMelissa (Books&Things) you are so welcome! And if you see it I do hope you like it. I was actually surprised with myself. :) Thank you!
