Synopsis:
My secret is out.
You know that saying, to hell in a hand basket? That’s where my life is headed. Three days ago, the Vampire Court learned about my forbidden FireSoul magic. It’s basically a death sentence. Except they’ve made me a deal. I have to pass a series of trials, designed to test my magic and my loyalty. If I survive, I become an ally of the Court, which would be awesome.
Problem is, the trials are as deadly as a hungry hellhound and I can’t trust my partner, the sexy hybrid-vampire Ares. Worse, there’s a new magic inside me that’s eating me alive. It won’t stop until I learn to control it, but that’s a tall order given everything else that’s on my plate. Between the trials and a recent theft at my shop, Ancient Magic, I’m up to my ears in magical problems.
Trial by Magic is a fast-paced fantasy mystery with a kick-butt heroine, a tough hero, and magic that will blow your socks off.
First Sentence:
"How much further?" I wheezed as I raced alongside Cass, my deirfiur.

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Laurel returns to bring Nix and our crew to life for us. When the characters sound short of breath, so does Laurel. I enjoy these little actions added to narrators, it makes the book feel alive in audio. I enjoy the way Laurel bring the characters to life by sounding as they are actually living through the events written.
All of the deirfiur have to go through trials of their own, to learn their abilities and grow into their part for the ultimate end goal. Nix has her journey here. Nix learns more about herself and her powers. She even learns of something she didn't know she had. But Nix also gains a strong ally group and a close friend.
I like Nix because she's not all power. Nix thinks she's not powerful in magic with the ability she has, conjuring. But Nix is stronger in other ways. Nix has a hidden power she didn't realize she had, which is very neat. I like this magic, and it fits her and her life. Nix is quick to learn and control her new magics. She doesn't like the one power she absorbed in the previous book, but it's the opposite yet the same as what she possesses and is needed for her rule in what's to come for the trio of ladies.
The trials. Aaah. These are hard for Ares to watch and a struggle for Nix to see Ares stand off to the side like he doesn't care. But he has to. And Nix shines in her true personality that we already know about her. Nix is a formidable fighter and friend. Nix is loyal to a fault. She meets a few goddesses along the way as well, one becomes like a friend too. The goddesses in the Vampire Realm have interesting information to share about Nix, but it's still not as detailed as wanted. But it gives us hints as to what could be coming for Nix and others.
Ares. *sigh* He's a great match for Nix. He's strong and a mix of human and vampire. This is something that makes for a very powerful being in this world, as we've seen previously. Ares is patient with Nix, letting her get through the trials on her own and getting to know him. Nix knows this, and deals with the most important on the list. But she is attracted to Ares, as he is to her.
I very much enjoyed listening to this book. Nix's trials were new in this world and exciting as she fought through. I enjoyed the relationship building as well. It's something that grows with the characters as they establish a trust between them. This is well done through their actions and the story.
We see the Master in the battle at the end of the book. He's a new character and one I'm looking forward to learning more about.
I'm totally on to the next story!
