Synopsis:
In the city of Magic's Bend, I protect what's mine. No matter what.
To the world, I'm a just a Conjurer. To my closest friends, I'm a FireSoul--a dangerous Magica with forbidden powers and a dragon's soul. The downside? If anyone discovers what I am, I'm dead. So I lay low, kicking butt with my weapons, not my magic.
Things get ugly when I witness the murder of a powerful vampire ally and become the key suspect. Soon, I'm hunted by the sexiest, strongest supernatural I've ever met. Ares is an unheard of vampire hybrid, and it's hard to say if he wants to kiss me or kill me.
I've got three days to catch the real killer. The bad news? It will take my forbidden magic to succeed. But can I control it, much less keep my secret with Ares watching my every move? Especially when the stakes get ever higher?
I'm used to protecting others...now I have to protect myself.
Fugitive of Magic is a fast-paced fantasy mystery with a kick-butt heroine, a tough hero, and magic that will blow your socks off.

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I enjoy listening to Laurel voice the accents of the men. She gives a deeper tone to differentiate the males from females and gives the accent they are described as having. Always lovely. This balances with the three girls seem to sound similar, though other females in the world have different sounds to their voices based on personalities and some tone difference.
I do enjoy the gradual attraction between the characters in the stories. They are a slow growth so the characters get to know each other and grow a trust. And they get to decide if they like each other or not. These are important things in a relationship.
Nix witnesses a murder. A murder she's framed for. With the strong personality Nix has, she's determined to clear her name AND find the real killer. Nix learns more than she planned while on this case, and also finds a new ally, potential friend, in Ares.
Each sister has their own special field of experience and a connection with others in the world. Cass with the shifters, Del with the underworld. Now Nix has her growing connection with the Vampire Court. Not sure this is a good thing or bad thing yet, but it's what Nix has to work at. It's awesome to see Cass and Del fighting with Nix. They know Nix has valuable insight and powers to contribute. I love seeing all the powers together as they fight.
I think the time between books of the three woman has helped me. I enjoyed the story of Nix. Sure, we know what to expect with the story but it's relaxing and enjoyable as they find trouble and fight to get the answers to get out along with finding a great guy that takes a place at their side.
Something in Nix's predicament at the end of the book has me looking forward to the next books. I know Nix has some challenges ahead to prove herself to others, but there is an ultimate goal of finding someone that's going to be after her for what she knows. Also, I'm curious to see how what she's learned ties to her and Cass and Del. There is always connections with what we come across.

DeleteI agree. I like a slow-burn romance. It takes a minute, but it feels more real.
ReplyDeleteCarole Rae, Yes! I don't mind the slower if it feels more real.
DeleteI slow-burn is good, just as long it is not toooooo slow
