Do you like a new twist?
I read different takes on the over all Fantasy genre. Thanks to blogging, and meeting bloggers out there, I have learned there is soooo much more in the world of books. Much more than I would have ever known on my own. And it's growing. Great! I love it.
I read fantasy. I love the traditional journey and adventures we go on. I know what to expect. And that is in part why I love it. I know I love what I'm going to get.
I read Urban Fantasy. Now this genre gives a little more leeway in what to expect. But it has it's normal too.
Then I have found I enjoy reading dystopian, steampunk, and so many new aspects.
I know we (or I do sometimes) mentioning a book is the "traditional" sense of the genre. And some mention that it was a boring read because it wasn't something new. But, and correct me if I'm wrong or stepping on toes here, but isn't that why we love the genre we read? I enjoy my books that are easy to predict as they are what I want. What I expect. Why I read it. Part of the coziness for me is knowing what I'm getting because I enjoy it. I know I enjoy it.
Don't get me wrong. I love the twists and new takes. At the same time I love my classic feels, I love something new. The twists that authors throw in there. You know they take the norm and flip it around and turn it inside out to give you something new and exciting.
I wont fault an author for sticking to the 'traditional' feel of fantasy books or urban fantasy. And I wont fault an author for making something wondrous out of a new idea or spin. Both are amazing to me. And it depends on the mood I'm in on which I grab when I'm looking for my next read.

I agree with you about the classic feel and loving what is familiar. I do like a new twist now and again, but I like reading books that are similar to what I love to read the most.
ReplyDeleteI like both classics and creative twists. The one thing that annoys me though is when an author takes a classic idea and then changes it until it's no longer recognizable while continuing to claim it's the same thing. I see this in particular in urban fantasy where everyone has to have vampires in their stories but then they change the vampire's characteristics so they really aren't vampires anymore. This is a bit of a pet peeve.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that sometimes I just want to read something comforting so a traditional read is sometimes needed. I think most authors try to make their story original, but there can only be so many variations on the traveling quest stories! But when someone does manage to give it a twist, it's that change in your expectations that makes it stand out more. Both stories have their place - like you I know I read both! :)

ReplyDeleteWell screw that. If I love a book I love a book, even if it is filled with clichés.
Sure I love those new cool books with wonderful twists I have never seen before but at the same time I am sad cos everyone is doing that. I want my good old Shepard gets a sword and goes on a journey to slay a king books.
Oh I love creativity! Even if it fails but you see them try something new, I like the effort, when it is a true effort. Oh I have been enjoying the new twists. Probably always been there but just classified differently so we recognize it now. :)

Blodeuedd - That is it. I hate when people fault authors for being what we find as a comfy old blanket. I like to have those classic feels and the new as well. But crusify the author for doing what we love. :) Thank you! We need to write our old shepard book. That would be a fun time!

I love it when a book surprises me, and that includes doing a fresh new twist on an old idea. For instance, I thought I was sick of vampires until I read Karen Essex's Dracula in Love and the twist so different, clever, and unexpected that I was thoroughly coverted.
