Book Review: Shadows Before the Sun

Shadows Before the Sun

By:  Kelly Gay

Publisher:  Pocket Books

Publish Date:  July 31, 2012

Format:  Paperback, 334pgs, Pocket book size

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  4th book in Charlie Madigan series; 1st Book ~ The Better Part of Darkness, 2nd Book ~ The Darkest Edge of Dawn, 3rd Book ~ The Hour of Dust and Ashes

Recommendation:  Oh Yes!  Charlie wrecks destruction and fights through a hell like a champ in a world that looks like heaven.  And you HAVE to know what happens to Hank!

Book Synopsis:
Elysia may be heavenly off-world destination, but beyond it, in the siren city of Fiallan, the Circe have punished Charlie Madigan's partner, Hank, into a torturous state between life and death.  With all the proper legal channels cleared, Charlie heads to Elysia, not knowing what she'll find, or if she'll ever see the siren again...while at home, jinn crime boss Grigori Tennin has begun an all-out hunt for the divine being Ahkneri.  Tennin's tactics set off a chain reaction that puts Charlie in the cross hairs of the shadowy creature known as Death, and stirs Ahkneri from her long sleep -- and if Vengeance awakes, Atlanta will never be the same.

First Sentence:
"Again."
His muscles tensed, going rock hard as the whip sliced through the air with a long, brutal sigh.

Available for Order:

My Thoughts and Summary:
We start with a Prologue where Hank is being whipped with a special barbed whip for escaping the Circe witches years ago, and learns he is the last of his family line.

Rex and Charlie are on their way to look at a dead body in the Nymph territory.  Rex, being of a special decent, will help identify if a jinn was present at the scene as the Druid King says he saw.  The First One, Ahkneri, may not be as safe as Charlie had thought.  This case that could cause a deadly war between two enemies, all the day before she heads to Fiallan in Elysia to rescue Hank, her siren partner.  Charlie finds The Federation Representatives sent to find and start Hanks release have returned when she comes back to the office, and not with pleasant news.  Hanks not in any of the towers and the Circe claim to have executed him as the traitor they saw him as.  Charlie doesn't believe it and is still given the time off with approved passes, to go to Fiallan to see for herself and get closure.  Along the way Charlie finds Sandra, the Oracle, waiting for her and her fate is to join Charlie, to help her.  Charlie and Sandra enter the heaven of Elysia knowing what torment lays hidden in the beauty of which is only skin deep.

Dark comes to mind first.  Kelley has taken us on a dark path through the beautiful world.  I LOVE it!  The treatment in this one is pure torturous to the characters.  I love seeing Elysia and the Sirens.  Elysia looks like heaven on the outside, but to charlie, the inside is anything but.

The beginning takes us right into the current story, the murder case of a nymph with Jinn involved (and maybe Sidhe warriors too) and the issues with Hank.  But there are brief mentions of important pieces to help refresh what sparks my memories.  I know this all will tie together, but left curious about the nymph murder.

The family element is still present.  Although not as much, as Charlie is in Elysia hunting for Hank, but when she is home, it is there and strong.  Charlies daughter with Brim the hellhound and Rex make me smile with the fun craziness between them.  Such family love.

I feel I get more of different races here, once again with visiting another world this expands easily for us the cultures.  Slowly we learn more about the Djinn and Sirens, and even of those in Elysia more so with being there.  Their weaknesses and in depth with djinn as well as with Rex now.  I really like this in the books.  Kelley has thoroughly thought out her worlds.

With each book I enjoy this series more and more.  Kelley has left a few things open in the end that makes me curious to see what she will bring to us next.  There is something else to come, and I want to know who or what it is.  What fight will Charlie fight with her friends at her side?  What is Leander and what does he know of what's to come?  Who is the mysterious being after the First One?

Yes, this is a series I truly will keep an eye on.

I read this book for my own enjoyment.

Blog Book Chat, Stop 2 of Shadows Before the Sun

Alright, lets get right to the action here.  Where we stopped, it was a tough doing.  So, lets chat so we can get back to Charlie and see what the heck happens next!

****There Will Be Spoilers in the questions and comments****

Robyn's Questions:
1.)  What did you think of Charlie's power?  Could it even advance more?
2.)  Will Hank Come back now?  Or will it be awhile until we see old Hank?
3.)  What did you think of Sandra's fate?
4.)  The shadows.  Thoughts?

Melissa's Questions:
1.)  What curse do you think will be attached to Hank now? Just knowing these two extremely powerful words and being the only one or more?
2.)  Each time Charlie sees the Sachath it seems to be more humanoid looking, what is it trying to say to her?  How do you think she is to defeat it?
3.)  What more is coming?  Sandra mentioned she had seen images or scenes, and that Leander is on the right side, so what is coming?

Anything additional you would like to talk about, just mention in the comments.  Next week we will chat over the finale of the book!

There are so many amazing books already on the shelves and new ones coming out.

For a list of books yet to be released I'm looking to get, you can also look on my right Sidebar at the ever growing list titled Desired Reads - just scroll down. Of course there are tones of other new books to come out that are amazing as well, but these ones are part of series I have already started or for one reason or another caught my eye (and haven't seen much on other blogs yet). But I will highlight one here each week.

(mentioned in order of Release Date then Alphabetical if there are more than one book coming out on the same date.)

Charlie Madigan #4
By:  Kelly Gay
Due Out:  July 31, 2012

I read the first book and was taken with the angle of characters, aliens but yet fey feel.  Just rather interesting the way Kelly has weaved this world and created a whole new universe.  I enjoy the story lines and the kicking butt going on.

Goodreads Synopsis:
The electrifying sequel to the acclaimed urban fantasies The Better Part of DarknessThe Darkest Edge of Dawn, and The Hour of Dust and Ashes!

Book Review: The Hour of Dust and Ashes

The Hour of Dust and Ashes

By:  Kelly Gay

Publisher:  Pocket Books

Publish Date:  September 2011

Format:  Paperback 324pgs, Pocketbook size

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  3rd book in Charlie Madigan series; 1st Book ~ The Better Part of Darkness, 2nd Book The Darkest Edge of Dawn

Recommendation:  Oh Yes!  Especially if you read the first 2 books.  This one gets better.  And we get answers!  Full of action and fast pacing of the plot.

Book Synopsis:
To save her sister, she must stop a silent killer....

Protecting Atlanta from the off-world criminals of Underground is tough enough, but now Detective Charlie Madigan and her siren partner, Hank learn that the addicts of the off-world drug ash have begun taking their own lives.  Ash makes humans the perfect vessels for possession, and something or someone is leading them to their deaths.  Charlie is desperate to save her addicted sister, Bryn, from a similar fate.  As New Year's Eve approaches and time runs out, Charlie makes a deadly bargain with an ancient race of beings and embarks on a dangerous journey into hellish Charbydon with Hank and the Revenant Rex to save Bryn and make it back before it's too late.  Only, for one of them, coming home means facing a fate worse than death....

First Sentence:
"You mean to tell me every single exorcist in this city is gone?"

My Thoughts and Summary:
One week after the huge battle on the roof top in The Darkest Edge of Dawn we pick up with Charlie trying to find out if her sister is possessed with the let down that all the exorcists have suddenly vanished from the city.  The breakdown of self-will that ash has done to it's victims makes it possible for the Sons of Dawn cult to suppress human will and place spirits of their dead jinn priests in their bodies to do their bidding.  Who Charlie is and what she does makes Bryn, Charlies sister, the one person who could help the cult recover, if she is possessed...which Charlie has no proof of.  Compounding the want is now fear as the ash victims are committing suicide.  Charlie finds there is one way to find out, but it is a dangerous journey for her to undertake and if not completed by all four visitors with in a time block, she will die.  While Charlie is meeting these visitors she finds herself taken to the hellish world of Charbydon which could mean death if she doesn't get back home.  And the reason for going to Charbydon could be huge trouble for her and her family as well. Then there are jinn and others after Charlie for her knowledge of the First One.

Fast start, right back into Charlie's world where she is always being chased by someone and knocked around.  She is a fighter!  By now you know whats happened so we pick up a week later.  You don't need the rehashing, you want to get to the action which Charlie is known for finding, or finding her.  Along with the thickening plot with ash, Bryn, Hank, and all others.

I was worried we wouldn't get much of Hank in this book.  He was nearly comatose since his "singing" or use of his siren powers to help with the war at the end of book two.  But we do get more Hank, lots more.  And now, I can't wait for the next book!  Charlie learns more of the tattoo her and Hank share and the warmth that comes with it.

We get more Rex!  Lots more Rex.  It is really neat to see this man in action.  He is a kick arse fighter of old jinn.  But he has a softness that has come from the years of living with humans.  He is a wonderful addition to the series, and really makes the choice of Will or Rex even harder.

Charlie has to face some difficult decisions with her loved ones.  Ones that are very difficult, but needed to be made in the moment.  This is the area Charlie doesn't want to have to make chooses.  She is a family geared person, and one that wants to defend them all.

Not only is Charlie trying to save her sister, she has many mages after her from Tennin not believing the sarcophagus of the First One is gone.  Then we have a new dark presence that has us curious about it and wanting to know more.  And they keep falling down the dark hole of troubles, which keeps the action full.

I think this book became my favorite of the three thus far.  Each book has gotten better for me but this one digs deeper into the worlds of the off-worlders.  And I like learning more there.  And seeing Charlie fight her way out of everything and the wake of destruction she leaves behind.  Yet the sensitive side of Charlie for her family.

I read this book for my own enjoyment.

This book qualifies for Horror and Urban Fantasy Reading Challenge hosted by Book Chick City.

**Warning!  If you have not read the book, there WILL BE SPOILERS in the questions and comments.

As usual we have a few questions just to start the chat, but if you have other things you would like to chat on, bring it up in the comments. :)

Robyn's Questions:
1.)  Do you think they'll be able to save Hank?  At what risk?
2.)  Even though we haven't gotten to know Will, I was kind of sad to see him go.  Are you happy with the result?  Knowing we'll have Rex and he'll still be Will's body.
3.)  Thoughts on the Shadow creature anyone?  What danger will Charlie have to face with the shadow?
4.)  Is it me or did it seem to easy with Bryn?  I feel like something else is going to go wrong.

Melissa's Questions:
1.)  What about Emma?  She is going to the school for magic.  Do you think we'll see her much in the future?
2.)  Do you think there will be a long term affect on Charlie and Bryn for the power of the elements which Charlie used to help Bryn?
3.)  What about out lady in waiting?  The First One laying at the bottom of the lake.  What will come from the visions Charlie is having?

Who? What? Where? (41)

Who are you with? Where are you at? What's happening?

Share with us just a little bit of what is happening in the book you are reading, right where you are now.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.

(This is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )

I have to watch what I tell this week as it could be spoiler-ish, so here is an un-spoiler version.

I'm with Charlie Madigan, and a few others, in the hellish world of Charbydon.  Things are really not going as planned.  Could all turn out really bad!  But I think Charlie and crew might pull through, with a few debts owed.

Book Review: The Darkest Edge of Dawn

The Darkest Edge of Dawn

By:  Kelly Gay

Publisher:  Pocket Books

Publish Date:  September 2010

Format:  Paperback 371pgs, pocket size

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  2nd book in Charlie Madigan series; 1st book ~ The Better Part of Darkness

Recommendation:  Yes, if you read and enjoyed The Better Part of Darkness, this action packed read is for you as well.  If you love action and historical world building check this one out!

Book Synopsis:
It takes a strong woman to keep the peace in a city of endless night...

Deep beneath Underground, a cunning bid for power and revenge has begun - one that threatens to make Atlanta the new battleground in the ultimate confrontation between good and evil.  The powers of hellish Charbydon have the upper hand after plunging the city into primordial night.  And under the cover of darkness, a serial killer targets the most powerful Elysians in the city, the angelic Adonai.  For Detective Charlie Madigan and her siren partner Hank, tracking deadly predators is all in a day's work... but this case will test the limits of their strength and friendship as it draws them into a deadly world of power plays, ancient myths, explosive secrets, and a race against time that risks all that Charlie holds dear.

First Sentence:
"Okay.  I'm ready.  Give me a leg up."

My Thoughts and Summary:
Two months after the darkness came from the night Mynogan performed the ritual, in which Charlie played a huge part, the darkness is still hanging over Atlanta.  Relations between the Charbydon and the law enforcement then between the Charbydon and Elysians is rather shaky.  The darkness is making all in the town edgy.  Charlie is doing her best at learning to handle and use her newly engineered off-worldly abilities with the help of Aaron.  Charlie and Hank are members of a new elite part of the law for dealing with the unruly off-worlders.  They are now investigating a dead body, and a case to find six missing top elite Elysian's of the Adonai (a race that will not go down with out a fight, if they even go down) had disappeared to without a trace.  The deeper Charlie and Hank go the more they find out, and they are standing in the middle of a deadly battlefield between two powerful races.  The secret history of all the races is important.  The further Charlie and Hank dig into this case and history they could jeopardize their lives, friends lives, and many relationships... including theirs.  Can Charlie solve her case and stop the war from happening?  She has one week to do so.

We dive into the book right as Charlie and Hank are entering the warehouse where one dead body was found.  And with in the beginning of the first few chapters you are dropped right into the action and start getting trails for the investigation.

I have to say Kelly is amazing at filling a book packed full of action.  When the actions not in full swing we are digging deep into the great world building.  I learned more of the myths and history of the different races.  The history and cultures are very nicely drawn out for you to understand, more so towards the end of the book you learn the most.

As a second book in the series Kelly dives us into the action and gives us the little drops of information to refresh our memories.  I like that Kelly doesn't rehash everything from the first book right up front, but uses the events happening now to share that information.  This brings us right back up to speed, not even knowing that's what shes doing.  The book at times seemed to sway from the plot some, but that is to build the characters more.

Overall, this is a wonderful action read.  I would suggest this book to anyone loving lots of action in their Urban Fantasy reads.

I read this book for my own fun.

This book qualifies for the Speculative Fiction Challenge hosted by Floor to Ceiling Books along with The Horror and Urban Fantasy Challenge hosted by Book Chick City.

Book Chat (9)...Final Stop!

We are now to the end of The Darkest Edge of Dawn by Kelly Gay.

Now that was an action packed read!  I hope you all enjoyed your ride through this book as well.

So, all your thoughts are welcome in this post.  Let it all flow.  The good, the bad, the ugly. (okay hopefully not too ugly)  What did you like, not like, looking forward too?

Let us know your thoughts on all this.

Beware, if you have not read the book THERE WILL BE SPOILERS PRESENT.

We do have some questions to get us started in the chat:

Robyn's Questions:
1.)  Hank and Charlie.  Do you think that's the end of that or do you think their relationship will grow?
2.)  Do you think that since Tennin survived this book, maybe he'll play a bigger role in the next?
3.)  It looks like we're closer to seeing Will again.  Are we sure we want to?  Do you think Charlie will give him a chance?  What about Hank or Rex?

Melissa's Questions:
1.)  What do you think the sword did to Charlies arm?  Is this a permanente thing and what do you think it means?
2.)  Will Charlie have a lingering side affect to the Ash?
3.)  Will the other Ash victims be used again, in the future?

Blog Book Chat (9)...Stop 1

We have come to the first stop of our Blog Book Chat book.

We are well on our way in The Darkest Edge of Dawn.  Wow. What a beginning, huh?

Any and all are welcome to join in with us!  We love to hear from everyone.

In case you are curious we do have a schedule worked out to read a third of the book every week over three weeks.  And the chats are on Thursdays, so here is the schedule for you:
Stop 1 ~ March 3, 2011 - end of Chapter 8, pg 133
Stop 2 ~ March 10, 2011 - end of Chapter 15, pg 262
Stop 3 ~ March 17, 2011 - end of book

Now Robyn and I have some questions to get the chat starting.  We will chat on anything you add in the comments as we go too.

Robyn's Questions:
1.)  What do you think Llyran really wants?
2.)  Do you think we will see the return of Will?  What happens if hre relationship with Rex grows?
3.)  Do you think Bryn will recover from her addiction?  Or could it cause more damage?

Melissa's Questions:
1.)  What is going on with Charlies vision?  Her vision is blurring and she is seeing things.  Is this a new power of hers manifesting?  Or something else?
