Graphic Novel Review: The Battle of Blood and Ink

The Battle of Blood and Ink

Words By:  Jared Axelrod

Pictures By:  Steve Walker

Publisher:  Tor

Publish Date:  May 2012

Format:  Hardcover

Series:  1st Print book, 3rd in series with Podcasts of Fables of the Flying City

Recommendation:  Oh yes.  Ashe and her daring in a city of secrets.  She seeks them out.

Synopsis:
If you're visiting the flying city of Amperstam without the latest printing of The Lurker's Guide, you might as well be lost.  This one-sheet is written, edited, and printed by Ashe, a girl raised on the streets of the flying city, and is dedicated to revealing its hidden treasures and deepest secrets -- including many that the over controlling government doesn't want anyone to know.  The stakes are raised when Ashe accidentally uncovers the horror of exactly how Amperstam travels among the skies and garners that attention of those who would rather that secret be kept in the hands of the city's powerful leaders.

Soon Ashe is on the run from thugs and assassins, faced with the choice of imperiling her life just to keep publishing, or giving in to the suggestion of a rich patron that she trade in her voice and identity for a quiet, comfortable life.  It's a war of confusion for Ashe, but one thing is very clear: just because you live in a flying city, you can't always keep your head in the clouds.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ashe is riding, while Tolban flies, around the city with other airships around them.  Captain Skold is coming in, requesting permission to dock and asylum on the city after the hit his ship has taken by Vrussians getting to Apmerstam. The Provost is ignoring the request!  Even with offer of money and supplies from Captain Skold, The Provost still resists.  Captain Skold has something The Provost wants more than service and Ashe learns what it is.  Ashe smells a story, and something more and dives into the depths of the flying city to find what it is.

The Provost left me skeptical about her in the last of the podcasts, and here we pick up where I don't trust her again.  Ashe knows the Provost has done worse than what she's doing now, making slaves, and she is set on proving it and publishing it.

We do get to see the press page that Ashe publishes.  The ACTUAL press page as it's published.  This is neat to see her put things in her own words, and gives us the overall feel of what we see in the comic images and statements said by the characters.

We see the famous flying city in black and white.  At last!  It's awesome to see it after listening to the podcasts.  Now I get to see all the different areas of the city I learned of in the podcasts as we follow everyone around to these areas.  And yes, each section of town is noted so you know where you are.  We see many of the characters: Tolban and his flying, Cardor from the hotel in his dress, and many others finally have a face.

The tattoo's on Ashes arms have all ways been a curiosity for me, here we see early in the book a design, created by someone we know, that is close to that on Ashe's arms.  It brings the wonder back to the front of my mind with these similar designs and those on Ashe.  What are they doing?  How did Ashe get them too?  Now I am curious with all that we have learned about the dreadful engine and these symbols, and the hints from Hanner Gatling that Ashe's answers are here as well.  All is answered here.

The engine room!!!  If you've been following my thoughts on the podcast, you know I've become increasingly curious about this room.  What powers the engine?  What happens to people down here?  Well, it's here!  It's all put together right here.  I love seeing the secrets of the city, and how they might tie to Ashe.

Oh Ashe!  We learn more about her past.  We also learn the truth of Ashe's tattoos.  Ashe has a nose for trouble, and finds it.  Trouble and a great story.  She finds herself in many scraps, and I love her for it.  One tough lady.

We learn a little saying of kids on the flying city.  "Through thick and thin, Through blood and ink, Clouddogs rule, And coppers stink!"  The saying even has been adjusted to who they want to say stinks as well.  Such world and culture growth here threw pictures and words.

I have to say this story still surprised me with happenings to our friends.  Then in the end!  Yes, it was a shocker to me to see what happened.  I really liked that.  Didn't know a graphic novel could hold so much suspense and story to tell.  I really liked what I learned here, and the story told.

I do hope we get more adventures of Ashe in the future, and of what becomes of the flying city now.

Quick Thoughts: Mini Comics: Fables of the Flying City

Words By:  Jared Axelrod

Pictures By:  Steve Walker

Publisher:  Jared Axelrod & Steve Walker

Format:  online

Series:  Mini Comics in series with Podcasts of Fables of the Flying City

Recommendation:  Oh yes.  Ashe is daring and on a mission, for a story.  She seeks them out.

Mini Comic #1:

In this six page mini quick fix of Ashe we see in the end just how cunning and brave she is.  She hears something that the Constables would not want her to share, she's a journalist, with the public.  But to keep that hidden, she does what they expect from her.

You get to see Tolban, and learn that Ashe is smart in the friends she has.  And I've become suspecious of the Provost now, even after the podcasts too.

Recommendation:  Yes.  We learn more of the insightful and strong Hanner Gatling.

Mini Comic #2:

We see Hanner Gatling, in her life and adventures.  We learn why she loves the craziness of chaos, it's in her blood.

Hanner has a harsh look at things, yet I enjoy her view.  She is always the one sitting in the middle watching, learning, and noting what is happening to share with the world.

There is one point in this quick comic that Hanner reminds me of Ashe in what she says and believes.  Strange connection there, to me anyway.  I like that connection, but feels strange.  Is there a relationship between them?  One maybe before Ashe lost her memory?

We end with Ashe morning the loss of Hanner.  Hanner was definitely a one of a kind.

Are you curious to see the images and thoughts of these characters?  These two Mini Comics are both free to view and read online at Fables of the Flying City site.

Overall Thoughts On: Fables of the Flying City

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Format:  Podcast

Genre:  Steampunk

Series:  First two books of Ashe

Recommendation:  Yes, of course!  Wonderful tale of Ashe, and gives great background to us for the graphic novel (although not needed to listen to to read graphic novel but adds to the suspense).

My Quick Thoughts:
I really enjoyed listening to this podcast.  Jared did a wonderful job of vocalizing the story.  I will say what sticks in my mind is the free flowing feeling of flying.  In both books it's mentioned, but in Mouths of the Dead I really got the feel of free flying and peace.  Jared is easy to listen to with his kind voice.

I enjoyed getting to know Ashe.  She was fun, strong, and full of spunk.  A girl not afraid of anything.  She is definitely my kind of character to follow.  The idea of Amperstam is amazing!  I was taken with the flying city and the fights to be independent of the world and fights they fly over.  Jared brings us around at the end of these two stories to become curious about a few things that will be brought to light in the graphic novel.  And I will say Jared did an amazing job of that here, as I'm anxious to read The Battle of Blood and Ink asap.

There are two books referenced in the podcasts, and I enjoyed both in different ways.

The first book:  Ashe of the Air

I enjoyed meeting Ashe and the clouddogs.  It was exciting and fun to meet everyone and see the reactions to each others personalities.  The flying and fighting was thrilling as well.  Ashe makes me laugh here with her carefree personality.  She is one tough and brave girl.

The second book:  Mouths of the Dead

Ashe has a drive, a story, and a mystery to solve.  Ashe seems to have grown as a character, even though still stubborn and determined she has a goal in mind and goes right for it.  I enjoyed traveling through the city and learning a few specific parts with her along the way.  And even a history behind the city.  We also get closer to learning about the powerful and mysterious horrible engine that moves the city.

Definitely a story to listen to and get to meet Ashe along with many others in this flying world.  The short episodes makes it easy to listen when and where ever.

I'll be diving into the graphic novel next, and that review will up soon!  I'm so curious about that dreaded engine and about Ashe.  Well done lead up to The Battle of Blood and Ink!  I didn't even realize it until the end that he brought us to the point we needed to be to get into the graphic novel.

Thoughts On: Fables of the Flying City Ep 42-44

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  42 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 10:49 minutes

Synopsis:
The Ossuarist

In which a floor is not a floor, tea is served, wares are shown, a dragon is described, who runs alone is quantified, murder is considered, the use of a skinner box is mentioned, and Ashe finds the stuff that dreams are made of.

My Thoughts and Summary:
The old man is an Ossuarist, and lives where the tunnel intersects at four tunnels with a grate in the floor to help with smell.  The Ossuarist asks what they lost as no one comes searching here for nothing.  There is mentions again of a dragon who eats lost souls.

The Ossuarist says water mongers do come through once in a while, but does remember a last one with Constables chasing.  One alone with a green shirt.  He remembers as he found her body later, recognizing the clothes.

The Ossuarist gives something to Ashe she claims is what dreams are made of...the Articles!  I'm curious what's in these Articles and of the Engine Dragon!

####################

Episode:  43 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 13:29 minutes

Synopsis:
Above The Six Evils

In which Cardor attempts to clean up a mess, Ashe leaves in haste, a murderer is accused, the police are called, a chase is given, Ashe considers a choice, and a leap is made.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Cardor is waiting for Ashe, missed her entrance, but sees the trail of sewer muck she's left.  As she leaves her room he finds her, but she's in to much of a hurry for her story to talk, and leaves her door open...  Ashe meets with Zeuli, Mosul's sister, and confronts her.

We learn of a piece of the Articles, any water monger is allowed to sell water.  We learn what the lost thing the founders of Amperstam was trying to work past in this city's setting.  The coppers were called on Ashe and Ashe is on the run!  She has solved the mystery of the acrobat girl, the missing Articles, but put herself in danger.

Hanner Gatling is remembered and Ashe makes a jump, a daring jump.

I'm interested in what we learn of what Mosul learned from the Articles and who and why stopped.  Now, What happens to her room?  And what happens to Ashe with her jump?!!?

####################

Episode:  44 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 41.27 minutes

Synopsis:
Mouths of the Dead

In which our heroine is caught, a skinner box is occupied, a ringmaster makes an appearance, the system is believed in, money changes hands, Cardor is denied, paper is printed and adventure begins anew.

My Thoughts and Summary:
First, the 41 minutes of this episode are not all of the story.  This was recorded at Balticon, and we learn a lot about the graphic novel and the podcast series as Jared started this two years ago.

Olig, the Lead Constable, catches Ashe and puts her in the skinner box.  Ashe is released with the help of the Circus Ringmaster, and learns what happened to her room.

When talking another Constable mentions something about not being involved with the Provosts actions.  There is clearly a hint that there is more going on here than anyone is willing to share, or wants to share.  They knew more of Mosul and Provost and the engine.  The night Constable hints at the acknowledges of the Provost killing Mosul, but we don't know how.  However there are lots of terrible screams that went with it.

We learn more of what's in the Articles.  Ashe uses it to her advantage to get a word in with the Constables.

The title of the second book is picked from this episode.  Mouth of the Dead, which is referenced to Ashe's paper, speaking for the deaths and unfair deaths of others.

Ashe returns to the Redlaw Inn to find Cardor and her press waiting outside.  Ashe gets upset with Cardor as he claims "he can't protect her any longer."  Ashe feels she doesn't need protected and doesn't want it.  The book had started with this same thinking towards Tolban as well.

We end with ships and explosions out in the sky.  This will lead us into the graphic novel next!  Off to read it now.

Thoughts On: Fables of the Flying City 38-41

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  38 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 22:15 minutes

Synopsis:
Trouble At The Library

In which the size of the library is revealed, help is offered, a statue goes unnamed, the police are called, violence ensues, short work is made, a request is revealed as impossible, and a voice lurks in the shadows.

My Thoughts and Summary:
We visit the city's library with Ashe.  The library has been created with copies of books from around the world.  Ashe asks to see the Articles of Amperstam, and trouble explodes.

This is one extensive and massive library.  It holds information from all the nations on the ground, and is of ten buildings at the moment.  Boy would it be neat to visit this library!  We learn of the six founders of Amperstam and what they hoped to accomplish with the flying city.

Shortly after asking for the Articles two men show up to escort Ashe away with them.  Ashe has spunk!  This ends in a fight, against the constables and she is good!  We find out there was "business" regarding the Articles, in other words, they were stolen.  Anyone asking to see them was to be reported.  Then we have a new voice hidden, asking Ashe to go with him.

####################

Episode:  39 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 13:26 minutes

Synopsis:
The Sand To Do It

In which a man is identified, a chase is given, guns are fired, a librarian is distraught, a leap is made, a tower is contemplated, a rogue is introduced, legs are admired, a Redlaw is threatened, and sand is appraised.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Another police man finally comes out to see Ashe, the Head Constable to be exact.  He is taking Ashe in on suspicion of treason.  Of course Ashe won't go!  Shots are fired, Ashe runs.  Thoughts of who and how the Articles where stolen form to Ashe, and she investigates further.

Ashe is full of action this episode.  She runs, jumps and flies through the air.  And once again Jared gives a great feel in his voice while the carefree jump and then the harsh hit when she lands.

We learn in the chit chat before action, that the Provost home was where the original Articles were and likely stolen from there.  So thoughts of a person jumping from a helicopter could steal the Articles and jump out to grab a swing...  Tolban knows of a helicopter pilot who would do it, and we go chat with him.  Mucol was taken by Hugh to the tower!  Mucol said she was going to give Redlaw a piece or three.  She had something on him, and she was going to use it!

Now, what did she have?  With this episode I'm starting to piece together what happened with Mucol, but I want to know more.

####################

Episode:  40 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 12:22 minutes

Synopsis:
Cardor Lends A Hand

In which Cardor is resistant, Ashe pushes, Cardor demures, Ashe pushes harder, stratagems are plotted, plums are plundered, low temperatures are enjoyed, Cardor's imagination is questioned, a clouddog is dismissed, another is discussed, and Castigir Redlaw is generous to his son.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ashe asks Cardor to see his dad, the big Redlaw as Castigir doesn't have time to schedule with just anyone let alone his own son, to see if he meet with the water monger girl.

We do meet Castigir Redlaw briefly here, a very rich and powerful man.  We learn he owns water condensation caves and a girl waving papers at him did come by saying she would ruin him.  But he thinks she had nothing as she had not been back.  Then!  Then we have mention of the tenant with a past due bill and has until tomorrow then all her items are to go in the alley...the tenant, Ashe.

I kinda feel for Cardor here with his dad.  Seems Cardor doesn't feel important or powerful like his father.

####################

Episode:  41 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 12:39 minutes

Synopsis:
Bones Below The Streets

In which our heroes go below, Gatling is measured against, Ashe admits what she's looking for, Tolban makes a misstep, a net is fortuitous, piles of skulls are witnessed, the likelihood of monsters is debated, and the Ossuarist makes his presence known.

My Thoughts and Summary:
There are tunnels through the city, in the "ground."  Sewers.  Ashe and Tolban trapse through them.  Tolban wants out, Ashe wants to know more of her current case.  A monster is speculated about, with what is found, and Ashe slips falling toward the sky below her.

We remember Gatling briefly.  Ashe is asked what she is looking for, she answers a reason, but then interrupted before she finishes her thought.

We get to see the inside of the underbelly of the city.  The tunnels, or sewers.  The tunnels are all angled to allow waste to fall with gravity, out to land below.  Then they find tons and tons of piles of skulls and bones.  I am even more curious as to what the engine does to create this from people!

We do meet a new person down here doing his job.  This old man has much to share and just might as offers Ashe and Tolban tea where he stays.

Thoughts on: Fables of the Flying City Ep 34-37

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  34 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 22:15 minutes

Synopsis:
A Night At The Circus

In which a girl is in trouble, a light brings no warmth, a door is threatened, blending is achieved, acrobats are miscounted, inquiries are made, an old friend lends a helping hand and a new adventure begins.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Book 2!!

We follow a young acrobat running through the tunnel from people.  She can't go back after what she said.  Strange light at the end of the tunnel draws her on, hoping to get somewhere safe.  To run into the...Engine room.

Ashe has locked herself in the room Gatling rented at Redlaw Arms, and there are no credits left to pay for it.  Tolban comes to get Ashe out, to go to the Circus.  When Ashe agrees to go, she notes that the Ring Leader says there are four trapeze artists where Ashe only sees three.  She smells a story and is going to find it.

We almost get to hear what powers the Engines.  But, don't because its so horrid to put words to or even think on.  We do know Provost is now Elderheim, and she sends this young girl to the slab, where Elderheim states, this is the girls way of giving back to the city.

Ashe doesn't want to be seen or see the looks on peoples faces after the deaths of the others, the ones she feels she killed.  Tolban talks Ashe into going as the circus is where people are busy watching the show and not her.

We see different nations in the circus folk.  A view of different cultures the city has flown over.

Again, I'm left wondering on this scary Engine room!

####################

Episode:  35 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 13:26 minutes

Synopsis:
To Stand In The Center

In which a secret is revealed, an old friend holds a hand, swinging leads to flight, support collapses, a ring is intimidating, Grayson refuses to be swallowed, origins are revealed, and claim of ownership is tested.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Mari teaches Ashe the trapeze.  Then Ashe goes to the Circus to try out for the position.  Through Grayson, we learn about the girl that Ashe is replacing.  The girl went to a bottled water meeting, with her family, and didn't return.

Hee hee.  Ashe falls a lot, but she has fire and keeps going until she gets it.  We learn a little bit of Mari and her circus background with her family.  When Ashe finally gets a flight through the air, one right jump on the trapeze with Mari, we learn the feeling of being in the air.  Jared does a wonderful job of giving that feel of weightlessness in his voice.

####################

Episode:  36 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 12:22 minutes

Synopsis:
Familiar Connections

In which Cardor knocks timidly, a hotel room is viewed, condensation caves are visited, Ashe is there for the water, a collection of caps is surveyed, a boy spits, a larger picture is seen and a fan is revealed.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Cardor is at Ashe's door to her hotel room, needing her to leave, just short of begging Ashe to leave.  With no answer he pulls out the master key he smuggled from his father.  With the mess and squishy carpet, he leaves, waiting for Ashe to return.

Ashe is at the water mongers questioning.  We learn there are different color caps on the water bottles based on who's selling that brand of water.  We meet one of Heubal's children, Zeik, who also knows Ashe is with the Press.  But the trapeze artist was also one of Heubal's daughters as well.  Ashe tells she wants the girls story, and Zeik takes her to Heubal.

####################

Episode:  37 of 44, Book Two: Mouths of the Dead

Format:  Podcast; 12:39 minutes

Synopsis:
Old Heubal's Will

In which Old Heubal lays forth.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ashe is having dinner with the missing trapeze girls sister and mom, Heubal.

This is where we learn of the different water mongers.  Heubal being one of the best and accepting any challenge from another water monger.  And we learn her view of the water mongers present.  We also learn Redlaw, the very same that owns the hotel Ashe is staying at, is into water now.

The trapeze girl, Mosul, was from the top, well known water monger family.  She claims to have been into the Articles of Amperstam and found something to use against Redlaw.  Ashe says the Articles should be in the Library.  What did Mosul find?  Could this be the reason for running and into the engine room?

Thoughts On: Fables of the Flying City Ep 32-33

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  32 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 15:05 minutes

Synopsis:
Balancing on the Fulcrum of Causality

In which it all goes boom.

My Thoughts and Summary:
We meet the pilot of the scout plane on it's suicide mission.  Surprise surprise!  One who was forbidden from flying looking to make a name for herself as a hero.  The plan is discussed and agreed upon with the ship.  Unfortunately all are not going to make it out of this one.  But Ashe will inherit a new position in life.

In this story we learn Gatling knows something of the speed of the city and that there is a relation to Ashe and her scars, even her memory loss.  Again, I'm brought back to the big curiosity of what goes on in that engine...And Ashe's past!

Ashe and Cerannah could become new symbols for this war, and against the Vrussians in the future.  I have to laugh, even in a sadder moment, at Ashe as she finally gets to punch Cerannah...and even enjoy it.  Ashe now gets to tell Gatlings stories and take care of the press.  She also will get to learn who she is and what her story is.  Gatling tells Ashe it's on Amperstam.

In the end we hear stories told of the big event.  A monument created in Kitchener's name.  Gatling now remembered as a saint.  And Amperstam is now in a new view by the world.

####################

Episode:  33 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 13:11 minutes

Synopsis:
Ashe of the Air

In which our heroine is not believed, a liar is called, the wrong parts are thrived upon, descriptions are given, one Ashe lives on without the other, a silly goose is named, a title is denied, Slanger can't hear, memory is pulled upon, advice on betting is given, Ashe says goodbye, and then moves on to the next adventure.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ashe quits the Aerial Guard!  She made Captain for saving a life, but leaves as well.

Ashe has realized she thrives on the wrong parts of being part of the Aerial Guard, the danger and chaos.  Mari doesn't think she can fly without Ashe, but Ashe thinks (and tells her so) that she can.  She's one of the best.

Ashe has taken up a new position, to be a printer now.  She remembers what Gatling said about Ashes past and sounds like she is going to find out what it is.

As Ashe is leaving we see the new recruits, and remember when Ashe started.  Ashe is asked by Slanger to give words of wisdom.  Ashe delivers a heartfelt speech which may not make sense to the new recruits, but being through all Ashe has been through and us with her, it makes perfect sense.

But Ashe always has an adventure ahead of her.  Looking forward to listening to book 2.

We are now on to Book 2: Mouths Of The Dead

Mini Comics!

You all know I've been loving the steampunk Podcast Fables of the Flying City by Jared Axelrod.  And that I have the full graphic novel, Blood and Ink, he and Steve Walker have published through Tor sitting here to enjoy...which I plan to as soon as I'm done with the 10 or so podcasts I have left.  (build up for the story to come.)

But back on track, Jared Axelrod and Steve Walker have mini comics of this world and characters to share with you.  And they are free!  Yes.  They are available on Fables of the Flying City site.

The first one has been up for a while, and with Ashe.

The second is new and with the Hanner Gatling.  A character I have grown to enjoy in the podcasts as she has strong descriptions, ones I'd never think of but very visual.  Gatling is a pipe smoking, press running, strong woman always looking for the big scoop on the next big story.  And brilliant at it.

I do hope you take a moment to check these out.  They are well drawn and great little clips of the characters and world...and story of.

Thoughts on: Fables of the Flying City Ep 28-31

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  28 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 11:10 minutes

Synopsis:
Peddling Life

In which a mother is not expected, a request is denied, daredevil stunts are discouraged, the training of horses is considered, a dream is deferred, a gentleman of the bottle is placed in an uncomfortable spot, easy money has evaporated, a boy is disappointed, a package arrives, and things are much worse than they seem.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Cerannah is checking over the plane.  Her commander -- her mother -- talks to her about not flying, so promotes Cerannah to another position, to get out of planes and safer.  Maseron Finn is a water monger, with a dilemma.  Money has gone scarce and the poor don't have any money to pay for water.  Does he let his friends and neighbors die of thirst or spread life in the bottles with others?  Ashe goes to the Red Inn and the lobby is empty.  There is a large package there for her from Gatling...a huge create.

We learn Commander Hindinu has done much for her daughter, Cerannah, to carry her through the ranks of the military of the Flying City.  This is an interesting view into Cerannah, the woman we have kinda come to not like (well, like for her being the person that torments people).

This is an episode where we see the affects of war on different parts of the city.  Again we are reminded this city is isolated in the sky.  There is no other way to get water, food, or money here to keep things going.

I was glad of the mention of Ashe with the printing press.  I was starting to wonder what was happening there.  Hanner is in the package!!  I was so surprised, then feared what might have happened to her to be shipped back to the Flying City.  Something is bad.

Synopsis:
A Necessary Act of Hell

In which the Provost sets pen to paper, a history is recounted, a dream is regretted, a heart is weighted, a yoke is taken up, beliefs are mistaken, a future is envisioned, and a fool's cap is worn.

My Thoughts and Summary:
From the log of the Provost of Amperstam.

We have a guest reader today that reads as the Provost.

We learn the thoughts on Amperstam when he took off and he was young, and theirs a cost to keep the city in the air.  The Provost is worried about the siege on the city.  Provost is willing to go to the Vrussians to make sure his people are taken care of.

The reason this city was started was to try and escape the battles and wars on land, and going to the air.  But it seems there is always someone who wants to have everything.

It sounds as Provost is ready to turn over the city to Vrussia, for his people to live.

Someone Should Be In Heaven

In which a place in the afterlife is assured, a governorship is declared, a symbol of might is imagined, a knife finds its mark, a letter is sent, a key is exchanged, a man takes to the air, a horror is witnessed and a price is accepted.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Provost is talking with Vrussia represent, Ambassador Ustinov, and will be sent to Vrussia with a Vrussian Governor to take over in his place.  Elderheim and Kitchener are with Provost talking with Ambassador Ustinov.  Suddenly a knife comes flying from unknown!  An assassin is present.  Elderheim takes command of the situation and sends an order about explosives, and a plan to save the city.

Elderheim steps up here to save the city.  but in doing so we see Provost losing drive to carry on now.

I've got questions about the secrets of this Flying city and what makes it tick.  What does it mean if the city goes faster?  What sacrifice will be made?  The mysterious and strange engine of the city.  Elderheim goes into the engine room. What is the price to fly this amazing city?  What stress on the massive machine and why deaths?

Has me WAY curious and jumping to the next episode to learn about this engine, and plan with the Vrussian.

Episode: 31 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Takes All Kinds

In which a situation is difficult to understand, Tolban thinks logically, an Ace of the Air is needed, Ashe gets one better, Mari grips her pillow, a barrel is rolled, a scout ship is slammed against, a door handle is found, and Gatling pays a price for joining in.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Vise Provost, Elderheim, hired an assassin and it's being talked about among the military. Psycopomp ships, the Vrussian Religious leaders, are out in the sky.  Ashe, Gatling, and Tolban are talking about both of these items, and a possible way to affect the Vrussians.

We see Mari.  She doesn't want to fly as she feels she kills who's in the observer seat with her.  Ashe says she will sit in seat with Mari flying to save the city from blowing up something that could bring a severe attack on the city.  She actually say's she needs Mari to fly.

Ashe is the daredevil she is and jumps from a flying plane.  As well as Gatling too!  In trying to get the pilot of the scout ship to turn around, Gatling saves Ashe's life, by taking a shot.

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  24 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 8:48 minutes

Synopsis:
Owing Amperstam

In which a rogue reconsiders, alternatives are suggested, arguments are shot down, numbers are calculated, certainty is questioned, a baker ruminates, shutters are considered, and hope is measured out like grain.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Red Skull is the Captain on his vessel, and he's talking with his first mate (since the mutiny) on wanting to go to Amperstam as their cargo will get a better price, but the planes that are buzzing around it... Even if they made it in one piece to land, the profit wouldn't be enough to cover the repairs.  Carmeno Delt is a baker, with no grain.  He is waiting on his delivery from the faithful Red Skull...that never shows.

This episode is timed perfectly in the story as we have come into the war with Vrussians.  This shows the affects of the war, outside and inside the city.  The Vrussians have a blockade up and limiting food supplies reaching the flying city.

Episode:  25 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

My Thoughts and Summary:
From Hanner Gatling, and the latest issue of The Hunter.  Gatling speaks only one language, but in different tongues -- the Truth.  She will do anything to speak the truth.  She's learning of Vrussian planes by talking to workers there and what their plans are.  All while on the Vrussian plane.

Gatling shares with us what she is learning while spending time with the Vrussians.  There are two different planes we learn about from her.  And what just might be the strength to Amperstam along with Vrussia's plan of trying to starve Amperstam.

Episode: 26 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 16:59 minutes

Synopsis:
Twelve Planes

In which Ashe explains what their goals are, Mari expresses doubt, Tolban pleads to be serious, the important thing is discovered, gliding back is declined, an explosion occurs, followed by many more, and Ashe holds her tongue.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ashe talks to her crew, as lieutenant, and they are taking the offensive and talk their goal, not to just kill Vrussians.  Ashe plans to weaken or, at hopes, drop the Maliken from the sky.  The powerful ship that drops the buzzers from the arms.  Mari is nervous after what happened to Jubrani and Ashe talks Mari up and that she is the best to be at point and Ashe needs her there.  Only twelve planes to go.  However, Tolban learns a secret Ashe has about the mission and you might be surprised at the number of planes that return.

The Aerial Guard is growing in it's ranks, but that is thanks to having oatmeal to keep the Flying city's army strong.  Ashe is the Squad Captain and lieutenant of her group.  Ashe has taken her directives a step further to try for a surprise attack on the Vrussians, in hops of weakening their carrier ship.

I got caught in the bombing and flight.  I had to hear what they did and what happens.  This was powerful with the characters I've gotten use to.  We have another that doesn't make it back and it's one with Mari, again.  The flight is successful, yet at what losses.

In which Ashe is found, the Officer's Mess is suggested, what it takes to be Captain is hypothesized, how to destroy the Vrussian Empire is described, an oath is reminded, motivations are revealed, pieces are left, a price is quoted, and one piece is chosen to remain.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Slanger finds Ashe in the Mess hall...drunk.  Ashe is upset over the deaths in her last mission, even though she earned a metal for taking down the ship.  Slanger gives Ashe something to think on and the what everyone agreed to and knew when they joined the Aerial Guard.

Ashe is rather upset with herself.  She is having a hard time with the losses at her command.  But Slanger makes Ashe feel better as Slanger is willing to die to stop what is going on, under Ashes command at that, if Ashe believes she can do it.

We learn the real reason Ashe joined the Aerial Guard here.  And poor Ashe wanted her wings so, but not at the cost she is seeing now.

Thoughts on: Fables of the Flying City 20-23

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  20 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 10:18 minutes

Synopsis:
Gatling Weighs In On War

In which Gatling makes her presence known, wars lack of complexity is noted, the twin side of bravado is revealed, the moment we're living in described, the promise of the Aerial Guard is considered, the score is counted, stone is preyed for, and the dead are listed.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Gaitling weighs in on War, from her latest issue of The Hunter.  She references anyone who is a fence sitter as target practice; that you have to pick a side during war. Gaitling talks of the scouting mission and the loss during it as well.  She prints the names of those lost, and Captain Sarawasu and Jobrani are among the many deaths.

Oh god!  We've, or Ashe has, lost a friend.  A few friends at that.  This is sad news.

Gaitling is one tough talking woman, and I believe she would back it up too.  lol.  I'll say, I wasn't so sure about the Gaitling episodes at first but I've come to love this woman's descriptions.  She really is so amazing at comparisons, comparisons I would never even think of, she has them.

####################

Episode:  21 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 9:54 minutes

Synopsis:
The Raptorwife

In which the Raptorwife is sought, a children's rhyme is remembered, the birds are denied, blood is brought up, Ashe presses her point, money is turned down, the body remains, the furnace is offered, and Hanner Gatling arrives once again.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ashe takes Jobrani's body to the Raptorwife for his preparing and sending off in death.  The woman tells Ashe, after looking at the body that she can't perform the ritual as his body is to charred, Ashe is upset and demands it as she needs it.  But there might be another way, with his home religion.  However, he is Consaguine thinking and according to the Raptorwife there is no burial needed.  Leaving, Ashe runs into Hanner Gaitling, and she has an idea.

The Raptorwife is a form of mortician with a curved knife on her belt, yet a friendly person.  There is a child's rhyme that is told of the Raptorwife, and it is told in this episode.  Very neat to hear, and learn the process of any who die on the flying city.

I feel as I'm really getting a depth to the story in the last several episodes, and this is wonderful to hear.  We also get to learn more on different religious beliefs around the city.

We learn that Ashe has been promoted for sighting the planes on the warship first.  But Ashe is afraid that she can't keep everyone safe, and wants to know she can at least follow through with it in the death rituals.  But that might be difficult to do.

Episode: 22 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 9:05 minutes

Synopsis:
Beyond Mistakes

In which our heroine crashes with an old friend, a balloon launch is plotted, Gatling's breath is ablaze, the wisdom of Kivings is revealed, Jobrani travels beyond mistakes, the Vrussians know the custom, a debt is created, and sarcasm is employed.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Gaitling tracked Ashe down at the Rapturewife's place and offers to help send Jobrani to the birds.  She has planned another form of burial, Kivings way, with a balloon and a pyre.  She says the Vrussians will not shoot the balloon down as they know the ritual and will respect it for the dead.

This is touching with the ways and thoughts of old sayings.  And thoughts on the passed Jobrani.

However, Gaitling has an ulterior motive in her helping, to ask something of Ashe.  I do enjoy when Gaitling is in the picture, she is touching, then turns around and makes me smile with her snark in the end.

Episode: 23 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 11:02 minutes

Synopsis:
A Warrior of the Future

In which a hotel is entered, a young man is met, a boyfriend is denied, a soldier is described, a room is witnessed, a technique is learned, a destination is revealed, and a promise is made.

My Thoughts and Summary:
We walking into the elaborate Red Law Inn, where Gaitling has brought Ashe.  Gaitling introduces Ashe to a very important man at the hotel, and warns him to treat Ashe better than her.  Taking Ashe to her room, Ashe sees the printing press and is taken by the machine.  Gaitling needs Ashe's help with the press while she is gone...on a Vrussian ship.

I love Gaitling and her expectations of treatment, which comes when meeting the man of the hotel.  lol.  I think she enjoys giving people a hard time, and making a joke out of it.  However, Gaitling is one that is great to boost confidence in Ashe.  She references back to Ashe knowing what the consequences of soup would be, and she still sent it flying.  Ashe is a strong one, and she knows it.

Thoughts On: Fables of the Flying City Ep 16-19

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  16 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 7:09 minutes

Synopsis:
Paying for Image

In which motives are questioned, the craftsmanship of Vrussian hulls are discussed, a turtledove is revealed, gold detailing is reasoned, nicknames are confirmed, and the order no one wants to hear is given.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ashe and Mari talk, wondering if they will be at war, Tolban joins in the conversation as well, thinking the Vrussians are better equipped.  Ashe things the more money the more things may not be good for them, to many extras to have, so maybe it will work out to Amperstam's benefit.

We learn a little bit about Ashe before she came to the Aerial Guard.  She was a thief, but only for the little things.  With Tolban's record, no one will fly with him, so he is thrilled to keep Ashe on his guns.

We leave this episode with the Aerial Guard being called to their vehicles.  We Are At War!

####################

Episode:  17 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 5:33 minutes

Synopsis:
Gatling Knows Her Weapons

In which Gatling's weapon of choice is revealed, a sword flying through the air is described, the mental state of average Amperstam citizen is beyond understanding, an analogy using both moths and flame is utilized, a sword flying through the air arrives again, and the beauty of a sharp weapon is shown.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Gatling shares another article from her press, The Hunter.  Truth is her weapon of choice, it's slow working and sometimes you need to cut someone, so she keeps a hunting knife as well.  But planes are weapons as well, fast and deadly ones.

Gaitling once again has caught me in her descriptions.  She has described a plane as such a deadly weapon, and the words she uses are outstanding!  Plain amazing and original.

####################

Episode: 18 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 9:31 minutes

Synopsis:
Watered and Running

In which wings are ordered to be earned, a pilot has second thoughts, a secret is revealed, an alternate life is described, how one dies is denied, a head is screwed on straight, a warship is approached, and the secret of the Vrussian Aerial Force is revealed.

My Thoughts and Summary:
We are back with Ashe and the Cloud dogs heading out on a scouting mission, looking for a weakness of the Vrussians warship.  Tolban is nervous, and Ashe talks him down to a calm head and ready to go.  Jobrani gives a drinking toast before leaving.  And in the air we find ourselves.

We learn what brought Tolban to the Aerial Guard, to avoid something.  Ashe's famous saying is used again after a time with out it, 'this is not how I or we die.'  Ashe uses this in talking Tolban out of his panic and out into the sky.

We get a great view of the opposing warship.  What about that ship!?!  And what Ashe realizes when she sees the ship.  She is a quick minded one.

####################

Episode: 19 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 10:44 minutes

Synopsis:
Storm of Confusion

In which a trap is seen, enemies are revealed, a mission is scrubbed, a mind is changed, a battle is fought, a soldier shows them how its done, a boiler explodes, the Calvary arrives, and the consequences of war are driven home.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Tolban and Ashe send the signal to turn and about the mission.  Ashe has seen and understands enough.  Ashe sends a light shot under the arms of the Vrussian warship to show the planes, but it's to late.  The planes drop and attack.  The scouting group is out numbered.  As they turn, one plane heads in to fight.  Ashe has Tolban turn back to cover them, and total chaos breaks and they can't tell who is firing at who.  Captain Sarawasu gives the order to abort as their plane gets hit.  The carvery has arrived from the city to help.

I was a little upset with Ringo and Cerannah.  I do hope they get reprimanded for thinking they could take on the Vrussian army alone, and causing their fellow cloud dogs to turn and help them, losing wonderful people in the process.  Ringo is shot in his arm, and Captain didn't make it.  But, the one that eats a little at the heart as we got to know him some, is Jobrani's cockpit has a charred body...

This is where the war pulls out to the front for us as listeners.  We know it's coming and we were out scouting, but now this is where the action picks up and shoots are sent against another army.  Now we are getting in deep with the war at our wingtips.  And we start to lose lives in this episode, close characters I was starting to really enjoy.

Thoughts On: Fables of the Flying City Ep 12-15

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  12 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 11:17 minutes

Synopsis:
Gatling Has No Trouble Squinting

In which an old voice returns, the oddness of the wind is mentioned, a hotel is appraised, the wealth of the wicked is tallied, definitions are relaxed, scrolls are hunted for, docks are seen, piracy motivations are considered, and the temperature and sweetness of fruit is judged.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Hanner Gatling speaks of the feel of the wind, being on a flying city, and who's attracted to Amperstam.  We learn that the Provost's people search docked ships for books and scrolls to copy and keep in their library.  Amperstam is not what it seems, according to Gatling.  She tells of all she sees from her hotel window.

Gatling gives a whole feel to the city...dangerous, mysterious, safe heaven to suspicious people.  Gatling has a way with words and descriptions that really puts things into a whole new light and perspective.  Makes me wonder of the likes of people here residing on Amperstam, and anxious to learn more.

####################

Episode:  13 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 10:01 minutes

Synopsis:
Story Marks

In which salve is applied, scars are fingered, tattoos are traced, lightning storms are recollected, faces are unknown, Consaquine is quoted, a want is gotten, speediness is praised, and how a main character learns to live is explained.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Jobrani is with Ashe putting the salve on her healing back weeks since she received them and talking over the battle planes seen.  He asks about her scars and tattoos, to learn there is no meaning behind them, to Ashe at this time.  She doesn't remember anything from before waking on fallen rocks after severe a lightning storm.

There seems to, maybe?, be something brewing between Jobrani and Ashe.  They do share a kiss, but then I wonder if there will be nothing there again afterward.  Jobrani talks of Consaquine again and the meanings to life.  Ashe shares a meaning, how she learns to live...by courting death.

I enjoy Ashe's view on life as she goes through.  Her comment on how she learns to live is interesting (and maybe inspiring), especially with what we learn about her in this episode.

####################

Episode: 14 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 8:39 minutes

Synopsis:
The Hunger of Emires

In which a familiar voice returns, the trouble with empires is described, a history is listed, what a fictional Vrussian does with his time is revealed, what a real Vrussian does with hers is compared, a crusade is considered, and a hunger is described.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Another Gaitling Episode, and another article from The Hunter, her journal.

We learn about Empires that have come and gone, and the one that is still around.  We learn of the speculated thought of the Vrussians, then of one Gaitling knew.  Vrussia as an Empire breaths and eats other empires or small countries.  Vrussians are so demanding to take possession of all, even Amperstam flying in their air they will own.

Everyone runs from Vrussia, and there is a reason.  Even the tales, if true or not, show the feelings and thoughts of the other worlds' people thoughts of Vrussians.

####################

Episode: 15 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 10:36 minutes

Synopsis:
Priceless Beyond Measure

In which the situation is claimed to be siple, flying makes things complicated, threats are hinted at, a city is claimed, the reasons Father Vrussia goes to war are revealed, a warning is given, a message is promised, the price of secrets is stated and the first blow is braced for.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Vrussian Commander Ustinov visits with Provost, Elderheim, and Kitchener to tell them Amperstam is over Vrussian soil and they want the city.  The three note that Amperstam is a solitary city and by making the claim Vrussia is making a declaration of war.  Ustinov returns to Father Vrussia to consult with the psyco palms to see if they say to declare war or not.  But before he leaves Vrussian Commander Ustinov makes it clear what Vrussia does best.  War is expected, in time.

We get a view of what Vrussia is really like.  And we see that they do not have the secret of the Flying City in their power, and Provost makes it know he will die before handing over the secret of the city as they do not need a flying city of their own.

Trouble in the form of war is at Amperstam's doorstep, but we don't know when it will start.  I wonder if all the recruits are ready for a war as well.  Ashe has only started in the Aerial Guard not so long ago.

Thoughts on: Fables of the Flying City Ep 8-11

Fables of the Flying City

By:  Jared Axelrod

Genre:  Steampunk

Episode:  8 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 12:46 minutes

Synopsis:
Bitter Brew

In which the Provost is argued with, an Empire is flown over, the capability of the Guard is judged, tea is requested, what Vrussian do with their time is considered, no interest in debating theoretical topics is shown, and engine is described, as well as the horror it evokes.

My Thoughts and Summary:
We are in the Provost of the flying city's cabin with Elderheim.  The flying city is coming to fly over Vrussian land.  They discuss whether the Aerial Guard will, or won't - more like it, be able to protect against the powerful Vrussian Army.  Amperstam is an independent city but the Vrussians may want to make the city their own citizens.

We get hints to the engine of the flying city being a big secret.  So much a secret that only the Provost and a few Engineers know about the engine.

We get a view of the city through other eyes, and that there is a great mystery to this wondrous flying city called Amperstam.  Also, we get a feel for the harsh world moving by under the city.  This episode makes me curious about the city and the leader.  I like seeing more of the "world" outside Ashe's eyes and mind.  Some may not like different views but I like it because I get a feel of the city and it's powers holding it up...of which Ashe does not know, or that we know of her knowing.

####################

Episode:  9 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast; 17:18 minutes

Synopsis:
Games For Liars

In which a plane roars to life, launchings and landings are comanded, stomach contents are released, a specific spleen is mentioned, beer is drunk, the escalation of revenge is discussed, rules are given, and a conclusion is reached.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Ashe and Tolban practice flying.  Someone is sick from repeated launches.  In their down time Ashe learns of a new gambling game - knuckles.  Cerannah plays and excels at the game, Ashe believes she knows how to beat Cerannah.

We learn some of Tolban's past, that he had to leave home.  But not all of the past.  There is something else there, and I am curious to learn the rest.

Ashe seems determined to beat Cerannah at everything.  She is a challenge for our daring Ashe, who is always looking for something of a challenge.  But I think that Cerannah being a bit of a bully type helps Ashe pick her as a challenge as well.  We, and Ashe, learn of the name she has earned herself, fearless.

####################

Episode: 10 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 10:32 minutes

Synopsis:
Grand Reveal

In which friends are implied, wagers are made, liars are called, an immense pot is procured, mugs are slammed, guesses are made, and a grand reveal is witnessed.

My Thoughts and Summary:
We see Cerannah playing knuckles with Bug, and she is intimidating with looks and tough yet pushing talk.  Ashe comes to the table, bringing a new rule and upsetting Cerannah's way.

I love how Ashe reads and off sets Cerannah's emotions.  I kind of figured Cerannah was doing what Ashe called her on , and loved the results.  Cerannah is getting what she dishes out, but I think is not going to take Ashe putting her on the spot and showing her up for long.  I just have a feeling Cerannah is going to try something with Ashe, sooner or later.

Ashe is helping others though.  Cool girl.  But in doing so she is digging a hole where she is making a strong enemy.  I will say Ashe's take with Cerannah is fun, in a vindictive kind of way (for me anyway).

####################

Episode: 11 of 33, Book One: Ashe of the Air

Format:  Podcast, 19:47 minutes

Synopsis:
Fall To The Edge

In which a city is viewed from an unlikely point of view, the cost of flying is weighed, an exception is requested and denied, a push is enacted, a flight is plotted, a neighborhood is envied, a razor is clipped, an observer is netted and an armada arrives.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Everyone is high at the top of the Provosts Tower with a training session.  The only way off, is by glider.  Cerannah has a few words for Ashe and pushes Ashe right off the highest building in the city.  Ashe falls and gets her glider arranged to fly however a little low to glide over the buildings, so through the streets she goes trying to beat Cerannah back to the barracks.

We get to see different parts of the city here as Ashe flies through the streets, as she has fallen to low.  The Throws, Brickstone, Market District, Crumbelton.  All different sections and different takes of life in the flying city.  This is nicely done to show how big Amperstam is and the people here.

Then as Ashe crashes her glider, she realizes others are looking...past her to the sky.  One massive battle ship with the Vrussian coat of arms present on it flies toward the city.  Then 20 more appear across the sky.  Amperstam is being invaded and Ashe will have to fight.  Oh, now the guard position looks like it's about to get real serious for Ashe.
