Movie Review: The Avengers

The Avengers

Released:  2012

Rated:  PG-13

Genre:  Sci-Fi, Action

Length:  143 mins = 2hrs 23mins

Recommendation:  Yes!!  If you enjoy Marvel character movies, action, and all great things rolled into one place, go see it!

Synopsis:
Nick Fury is director of S.H.I.E.L.D., an international peace keeping agency.  The agency is a who's who of Marvel Super Heroes, with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow.  When global security is threatened by Loki and his cohorts, Nick Fury and his team will need all their powers to save the world from disaster.

My Thoughts and Summary:
The cube recovered with Captain America is used in scientific research, of which is unknown to the heroes, but something happens and it takes on a life of its own to create a portal.  Through which Loki appears, and wreaks havoc over the lab, taking the scientist and professor Erik, friends of Thor and Jane.  Nick Fury decides to bring together the only option to save the world, the option tossed aside thinking it would not work, Creating the Avengers.  We bring The Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow and Hawkeye together into a group to retrieve Loki, when Thor shows up to take Loki home for his misgivings towards Earth.  Then creating a powerful, and combustible, team to save the world.

I new from the first commercial I NEEDED to see this one.  And see it on the big screen.  (movies like this are amazing on the big screen.)  Why did I want to see this movie?  Was it for the hot looking Thor?  No.  Was it for wonderful and adorable man, Captain America?  No.  The quick tongued Iron Man?  No!  Of course all these are great bonuses to see it but it was Loki.  The moment I saw Loki, I new I had to see this one.  See, I love Loki.  I think he is one of the only "bad guys" I can love.  I love his story, his comments, his actions - even when he isn't doing anything because he is up to something.

This movie is a WONDERFUL combination of action, conflict, humor, and knitting friendship and character growth.  We get more background on a few characters, learn more history and even how they function through the days now.  No, they don't all get along, and with that screw things up but mend them as well.  In the end, I think you will see there is a strong bond formed that even thought they scream at each other, they will gladly work together to save the worlds again.  Full action!  Against each other and against the enemy.  And we have humor mixed in with all the pieces.

I have watched the movies of The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America and I love the way pieces of their lives from each one is tied into this movie.  Well done to connect them all together, even if they don't know they are, and not retell what we already know but gives us new insight to each character as well.

Will we see another Marvel movie this well put together?  I think Marvel has raised their bar to a new level and will have to work hard to meet it every time.

The kid and husband went with me to see this one, and we all agree... SO well worth it!  We all loved it.  Just the right combination of all elements to keep our attention, make us smile, and want to watch more in the future.

    1. You know what Blodeuedd, I got lucky! The movie we saw was not in 3D. I've waited on several movies because of the 3D thing. I don't like it at all either. But we were fortunate to have one in the theaters that wasn't 3D with this one. But do hope you enjoy it when you see it. :D

  2. I'm so glad I'm not alone in hating 3-D (thanks Blodeuedd). I will see this eventually, but not in a hurry to do so. I do wish they had made a orgin movie for Hawkeye since he is one of my favorite Avengers. That way I could have seen what happened with his wife, Mockingbird.

Plus I'm never a huge fan of movies leaving out the first of any group. Ant-Man (Goliath), Wasp, and Vision should have been in the movie. And you can't forget Scarlet Witch, who is arguably one of the most important members of the team, ever. Sorry to go off on my rant, cause I really will see the movie. :-)

    1. Ryan, I have to say the version of Avengers we saw was not 3D, as I would not have seen it. I too don't like that 3D thing, and it's more money to see it that way! Really!?! Oh, I didn't think about the other characters. I thought there were more avengers, but honestly couldn't remember. We didn't get as much of Hawkeye's back ground or the Black Widow. Maybe they will come out with movies of them now?

And not a worry, glad you feel comfortable enough to rant. :) Thank you!!

  3. I have missed a few of the previous films leading up to this one, but I will eventually catch them. I want to see this one too. I might see it soon as my mom has been bugging me to watch a film and she likes these things like I do (that is where I get it from! LOL).

    1. Melissa (Books&things) - Truth be told, I don't think you need to see the films of the other characters. It's just and OCD think of mine. But do go see it, it really is well done. :)

  4. When I heard about this movie, was planning on skipping it as I was never a big Avengers fan. Only movie I saw was Iron Man, and that was on TV. But I keep reading rave review after rave review and once you mentioned Loki, I was convinced. And you're right, these types of movies are better on the big screen. Maybe I can find a non-3D version somewhere?

    1. Alexia, Oh we enjoyed the banter and fighting between the characters and others. And the building of the story line. I do hope you enjoy it if you get to go see it. And hope you can be as luck as us and find a non-3D version. If I hadn't have found one, I probably would have waited for the DVD. :)

  8. I don't really watch the superhero movies but I'm told this is one I can watch and enjoy without a bunch of background knowledge, so I will check it out when it hits the dvd shelves.

    1. Zia, I don't think you need to watch the other movies to watch this one. I just like that if you did they do tie in with histories. You know sometimes things change in the theaters. But this was a great action packed fun movie. I do hope you enjoy it if you see it.
