Flash Fiction Friday~Challenge (1)

Dottie over at Tink's Place have come up with the idea for a Monday Morning Flash Fiction challenge. Each Monday a new picture prompt will be posted and if you choose to participate you post your story on Friday - 350 words, give or take.

I have to thank Blodeuedd at Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell for introducing me to this fun meme.  I don't know if I'll be able to keep up with every week, but I'll give it a try from time to time.

And this weeks Picture is:

By Melissa

I couldn't stop them.  They just kept walking.  Smiling.  Like they found the sweetest piece of candy any child could ever want.  But not me.  I had the feeling of dread and goosebumps on my neck and arms wont go away.

Even Saria, my closest friend of all of our 11 years, is trying to get me to go with her.  "Come Lea." as she waves me to come towards her with her petite hand.  "It's like the heavens here.  Everyone is happy."

I just starred at her; my stomach heavy, chestnut eyes wide, and shacking my head, wondering how does she know what lay behind these beautiful glowing gates?  The look god sent, but feel of death to me.

I finally voice my question and concern, "Saria, but... but how do you know?  How do you know what is beyond the heavenly gates?  Even though they glow with the sun gods brightness and are so tempting.  Have you been through before?"

Saria just smiles an easy smile and answers in a calm I've never heard from my energetic friend before, "No, it's the feeling it gives off.  It flows through the forest and to us.  It calls us to it and tells us where to go.  Like the gods are speaking."

I'm stunned as I hear nothing.  Is there something wrong with me?  Why am I the only one not going toward the gates?  I look around at the others I've grown up with.  They are all smiling calmly and walking toward the gates.  Happy.  Maybe I am missing something.  But what if I'm not.  None of them would know the difference.

I turn to Saria with my determined eyes and say strongly, "I'll go.  With you.  But you can't wonder from me.  I'm worried.  I don't know what we are going into and I'm not convinced it's all clouds and songs as everyone seems to think."

Maybe there was a reason I didn't react the same way as the others, and that was so I could protect them.

  4. Hi Melissa!

Great little tale you've started here!! I love it! Is everyone entering the gates or is it just the children (like a pied piper thing?). I like that MC is going to be the protector in the story, strong lead! Now, I too am wondering about the gates, and what lies inside of them.

Thanks for playing, hope you can flash with us often!!

    Dottie :)
