Associate Programs?

I was thinking about becoming an...Amazon Associate with links to books and things I review, and such.  But, I don't know much about it.  I've read over the information they give you to check out, but I was wondering about it from anyone that's doing or has done it.

So thought I'd check in with others that might be doing the same thing.  That would be you! my faithful friends.

First, anything you can share with me about this program, and any other programs that are available to work through the books and such with, would be greatly appreciated.

Is it as easy as it sounds?  You know the old thinking, it's not as easy as it sounds.  I was wondering about that.  It seems like all I have to do is put the link, and if anyone follows it and purchases, I get credit.  I also see there are other links for items and sales you can link, that I could get credit for.  Have you tried those out too?

Are there any hidden rules or costs that I don't know about?  I just keep thinking there has to be more to it.

In the US, does this make any troubles when doing taxes?  I hate doing taxes.  Everyone does. lol.  But I was wondering if you get the normal 1099 to claim on taxes and things are easy-peazy.

I'm sure there are other questions I should be asking, and will have.  But this will get me started.  So anything you can add, would be great!

Thank you!

  1. I find Amazon Affiliates pretty easy! I've never made enough to have to claim it on my taxes, so I don't know about all of that. I've made about $15 since starting last summer.

    1. Amanda @ Letters Inside Out, Thank you for commenting. And that is cool to learn, if I don't make much I won't have to worry about it. I've heard it's not a large amount of money, but at least it could buy me a book, or two. ;) Thank you! Glad to hear it's an easy program. I'm really thinking about doing it.

  2. Actually, it is pretty much as easy as it sounds. Amazon writes the html code for you and you just paste it into a widget on your page. You can even get rotating ads that change products according to popularity, or carousels with more than one book or product at a time that you can choose.
    Good luck! :-)

  3. It is very easy. I haven't made enough to claim taxes, so you probably won't have to worry about it for a while. Amazon does all the HTML code for you and you just find what you want and paste it into your post or whatever. Once you sign up, just play around the website, it's pretty easy to get the hang of.

I am also an affiliate with Book Depository and Barnes and Noble. I found these were a little more confusing for me at first. Book Depository is hard to get a hold of if you have questions so if you have any questions, just email me (email addy is on my blog). Barnes and Noble you have to go through this LinkShare thing which at first confused me but then it actually makes everything really easy, even more options than Amazon. If you have any questions, just let me know.

    1. Jennifer L. Bielman, I wasn't sure where the limit was for taxes. Cool to hear it won't affect me there. :) And I didn't realize Book Depository and B&N had one too. Hmm, I might look into those as well. :) Thank you greatly for all the information! And I just might take you up on the offer of help. :) Thankyou!

  4. Amazon really is as easy as it sounds. I don't get much from it, but every little bit is nice, especially when Kindle books are so cheap.

    1. Carol, Thank you! I'm not planning on retiring from the income, just a book or two with it. :) Thank you!!

  5. I don't know. Amazon took away my privileges since I'm in CO and haven't reinstated them even after the whole taxes things happened. As far as claiming them on the income tax form, I think you have to make more than $1000 (I have to recheck to see if it's changed) to claim it, but I forget if that is state or federal. Anyway, it takes some money before you have to claim it. You should be able to find that info out on line on the gov't sites.

    1. Melissa (Books&Things) That is right! I forgot about all of that. I don't think PA was in that, just CO. Oh, and they still haven't given the privileges back! That sucks! Thanks for the info on taxes. I don't know when they start wanting money. The way the govn't is they seem to want every penny they can get, from every dollar. Thank you!

  6. Maybe amazon US would actually give you the money you earned, but amazon UK wouldn't. One of the reasons I stopped being an amazon affiliate. Their rule then was that you gotta earn a certain amount, I think it was £100, to get paid. Of the four years I was with them, earnings from the affiliate programme never came up to that much. They forfeited all the income when I stopped being an affiliate. Hopefully it will go better for you if you do try it out.

    1. Cherry, That is wrong! I can't believe they did that. I'll have to keep an eye out if I try the Amazon Affiliate program. Thank you for sharing the information with me.
