Book Review: Rusted Veins

Rusted Veins

By:  Jaye Wells

Publish Date:  October 28, 2013

Publisher:  Orbit

Format:  eBook, 52pgs

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  5.5 in Sabina Kane series: 1st Book ~ Red-Headed Stepchild, 2nd Book ~ The Mage in Black, 2.5 Short story ~ Violet Tendencies, 3rd Book ~ Green-Eyed Demon, 4th Book ~ Silver-Tongued Devil, 5th Book ~ Blue-Blooded Vamp

Recommendation:  Visit old friends once again. Loved seeing the crew back at work.

Synopsis:
Halloween in New Orleans is usually a treat. But for Sabina Kane and the rest of Team Awesome, this year's celebration has its share of nasty tricks. When Brooks's new waitress goes missing, the Changeling asks Sabina to help him find her.

The problem? The missing mage is one of Adam Lazaru's old flames, and having her show up in their lives is giving Sabina heartburn. Plus saving her may also threaten the fragile peace Sabina's achieved for the Dark Races. Luckily for Adam's ex—but unlucky for her kidnappers—Sabina Kane isn't easily spooked.

First Sentence:
Some cities are naturally holiday cities.

**I read this story for my own enjoyment.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Sabina is returning home from her duty filled European trip. A home town that livens up at Halloween, New Orleans. Halloween is just days away. Gighul gets the night away from home and wants to hang with Sabina and Adam, like the old days, at Erron's for dinner. Erron shares news that his concert won't happen on Halloween after what his psychic bassist saw. And Brooks rushes in late with terrible news of a missing waitress who had a date with a vampire two nights ago and hasn't been home since. Brooks is terrified for the girl as she once was into drugs and, well, vampire! Gighul and Adam are ready to go find Candy, but Sabina isn't as gun ho especially after she learns the girl is an ex of Adam's.

I don't want to say to much and give the story away. I enjoy this world and seeing these characters again.

I was a little surprised to see Sabina was living in New Orleans, then not so much with the friends she made here and the thinness of the veil between life and death - with her connections and all.

Sabina. Oh I loved the evil and wicked Sabina. The saucy woman ready to draw her gun and shoot first. Sabina has grown and changed with the position she has inherited. And the people around her have loved her and it shows. Sabina seems to be managing well as head of the Dark Races Cabinet. Sabina has matured! She still has a stubborn streak, but she's learning.

We hear, see, names we are very familiar with. Michael Romulus, Queen Maeve, Rhea, Maisie, and yes Adam. Then we have the one and only Gighul. But there are so many more that are present in this short read. It's amazing how Jaye was able to bring such a cast together in a quick read.

It is so cool to see them all again. To see where they all went and became. They are all still the same feisty bunch we meet but time and life has taken each to a new level in their lives.

Definitely read this AFTER you finish the series up. The first page tells you how it all ends and the way things are now for everyone.

Looking Forward to...(134)

There are so many amazing books already on the shelves and new ones coming out.

For a list of books yet to be released I'm looking to get, you can also look on my right Sidebar at the ever growing list titled Desired Reads - just scroll down. Of course there are tones of other new books to come out that are amazing as well, but these ones are part of series I have already started or for one reason or another caught my eye (and haven't seen much on other blogs yet). But I will highlight one here each week.

(mentioned in order of Release Date then Alphabetical if there are more than one book coming out on the same date.)

It's been a while since I've done one of these Friday Looking Forward posts.  And I miss doing them.

Book Review: Blue-Blooded Vamp

Blue-Blooded Vamp

By:  Jaye Wells

Publisher:  Orbit

Publish Date:  June 1, 2012

Format:  Paperback 456pgs, pocketbook size

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  5th & Final in Sabina Kane series; 1st Book ~ Red-Headed Stepchild, 2nd Book ~ The Mage in Black, 2.5 Short story ~ Violet Tendencies, 3rd Book ~ Green-Eyed Demon, 4th Book ~ Silver-Tongued Devil

Recommendation:  OH YES!! This is the action packed, surprises and answer full conclusion to a kick butt series!

Book Synopsis:
Things to do:
1)  Get to Rome.
2)  Gind Abel.
3)  Kill Cain.

Sabina Kane is on the hunt.  Her prey: Cain, the father of the vampire race and the one who murdered her family and her friends.  Unfortunately, Cain is hunting Sabina too.

The one man who holds the key to defeating Cain is, of course, Abel.  A mage with secrets to spare and, hopefully, the power to match it.  Unfortunately for Sabina, he's in Rome and may not want to be found.

Sabina sets out for Italy with her friends, Giguhl and Adam Lazarus, to track down the only man who can get her the revenge she hungers for.  But will he help her or oppose her?  And just who is Abel, really?  Worst of all, when Sabina figures out the goddess Lilith has a plan for her, she realizes this trip is getting deadlier by the minute.  As they say: when in Rome -- SURVIVE.

First Sentence:
The St. Charles streetcar lumbered its way toward the Garden District like a mourner in a funeral procession.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Days after the ending of Silver-Tongued Devil, Sabina, Adam, and Giguhl are in New Orleans heading to see Erron Zorn to talk him into helping them find Abel, his contact in Italy who knows all about stopping Cain.  But a wrinkle occurs, Asclpius the god Sabina owes not one but two favors to makes a dramatic entrance.  Asclpius is taking priority over killing Cain with his trump card, and wants Sabina to kill someone and return a magical item to him.  The ace is, this vampire's in Italy as well.  Sabina and her crew find their way to Rome looking for a man full of secrets...many of Cain and containing him, and many more.  With few leads Sabina has to find a man hidden away for decades and a gorgeous vampire, two separate cases.  The vampires in Los Angeles are rioting with out a strong leader, the previous leaders dead and one remaining turned tail and ran.  She needs to be found and convinced to return.  While the vampire system is falling apart can Sabina find someone to lead them in time?  Can Sabina prove she is the Chosen One, even if she never believed it before, in order to take care of Cain?  And actually make it through all the trials to do so?

EVERYONE makes an appearance in this novel.  Whether we see them or talk about them in memory, they are here.  It was bliss to be reminded of the people we lost along the way, and visit the memories again.  To see where Sabina came from and where she's come to.  Sabina has to do a few things that we would have never have thought her to think about a few six months ago where this started.  Sabina and Adam have some issues to work through in this book, and find a way.

I was happy, mad, and cried with these characters.  Then sad that it ended.  But Jaye didn't pull any punches in the end.  She laid it all out for us, rough to our hearts as it might be.

Jaye had to have known exactly where she was going from the first words of the first book, Red-Headed Stepchild.  Everything we (and Sabina) experienced along the way leads to this finale.  Whether to wear on us and worry us or to help us to the answers.  The pieces fit together perfectly.  This series all comes together as one and closes completely.  BRAVO JAYE!!

Blog Book Chat (28) Finished!

We have finished Blue-Blooded Vamp by Jaye Wells in one swoop here.  It was definitely a book hard to stop it.

If you have finished this book, do join in on the chat.  Anything you bring up in the comments, we will talk about.

WARNING:  There will be spoilers in the Comments, and in Questions.

So to get us started somewhere, Robyn and I have thought up a few questions...

Robyn's Questions:
1.)  Now that we hit the last book.  Were there any questions left unanswered that you wish were answered?
2.)  What was your reaction to Tristan?  What about his attitude towards her?
3.)  Maisie was a surprise.  Thoughts?

Melissa's Questions:
1.)  Do you think the end could have worked if the rules where reversed with the sisters?
2.)  What did you think of the tests at each gate?
3.)  What about the apples Adam took from the Bloodlands?  What will ever come of those?
4.)  Your thoughts on Lilith?

Who are you with? Where are you at? What's happening?

Share with us just a little bit of what is happening in the book you are reading, right where you are now.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.

(This is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )

I'm with Sabina ready to walk into a cave in Italy, with cheesecakes to ask a favor of the goddess Hekate.

Sabina Kane #5
By:  Jaye Wells
Due Out:  June 1, 2012

I'm hooked on this series, and this is the final installment.  Sabina has changes so much since the first book, Red-Headed Stepchild.  Sabina is strong, and fun with her secondary characters support.  I just have to finish this series off.

Book Review: Silver-Tongued Devil

Silver-Tongued Devil

By:  Jaye Wells

Publisher:  Orbit

Publish Date:  January 2012

Format:  Paperback 405pgs, pocketbook size

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  4th book in Sabina Kane series; Book 1 ~ Red-Headed Stepchild, Book 2 ~ The Mage in Black, Book 2.5 Violet Tendencies, Book 3 ~ Green-Eyed Demon

Recommendation:  Oh yes!!  Ruthless vampires, fun to laugh, and worries to be had.

Book Synopsis:
Things To Do:
1.) Learn how to be a team player
2.) Find a murderer
3.) Save the future of the dark races

Now that the threat of war has passed, Sabina Kane is ready to focus on the future.  Her relationship with Adam Lazarus is getting stronger and she's helping her sister, Maisie, overcome the trauma of her captivity in New Orleans.  Even Giguhl is managing to stay out of trouble.  Sabina wants to feel hopeful about the future, but part of her doesn't believe that peace is possible.

Her suspicions are confirmed when a string of sadistic murders threatens to stall treaty negotiations between the mages and the vampires.  Sabina pitches in to find the killer, but her investigation soon leads her down dark paths that have her questioning everyone she thought she could trust.  And the closer she gets to the killer, the more Sabina begins to suspect this is one foe she may not be able to kill.

First Sentence:
Blue lights flashed off the undersides of leaves.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Three months after Green-Eyed Demon ends, things are good, bad, and okay... Sabina is drawn to a crime scene by the smell of fresh blood, only because she'd been drinking bagged blood for months now.  But as she's there she hears the coroner wonder of the lack of blood at the scene and obvious attack point.  Sabina suspects a new vampire, an inexperienced one at that, is now killing in Slades territory.  Then a second murder, at the Vein, pulls Sabina, Adam, and Giguhl into working on the case that Sabina doesn't want to be on.  Which all needs to be solved ASAP with as the treaty amoung the three races; Vampires, Mages, and Fey, is coming close to signing.  Maise appears to be getting better, on the surface, but no prolific dreams, but things are going wonderfully with Adam...or are they?

If you haven't read the first three books, I guess you could start with this one.  The main arc of the first three books has pretty much closed, and the threads still open are briefly explained, and carried on from here.  But I would definitely start at the beginning, so you see what all has transpired with Cain previously, and appreciate the growth and changes in the characters.

Sabina has turned over a new leaf, and is really trying to be a part of the group now, a team player.  She still has her moments where she rather flight than talk with her friends and ask for help.  But she has come a loooong way from Red-Headed Stepchild.  Sabina seems to need her friends around now and likes having them.  And even though she has a quick tongue with Giguhl she still wants him happy.

Giguhl has gone from Demon Fight Club to Roller Derby. lol!  That is just fun, and the names. Oh my. lol.  Giguhl and Sabina come back as a team again here.  There are a few touching moments where they talk, and then are the old team again.

We have many names from the last three books popping up here; Pussy Willow, Mac, Georgia, Errol, and others.  It's really great to see them all come together here.  But of course, you know they can't stay that way.... so what pulls them apart?  What happens in their lives?  You just have to read it.  Oh, we have full out action here, and some tragic losses. But I'm not telling you who.

Sabina is thought to be crazy for thinking Cain is still after her... And the Vampires have a new "Leader" who still doesn't care for Sabina, which might make certain actions difficult for Sabina.

I enjoy reading the books of Sabina.  There is always great action, and so much fun for me.  I enjoy laughing and worrying about the characters.  Then reading the fights as well.  This one in no way disappointed.  It lived up to the other books in the series, even with Sabina growing as a character.  This one did have the middle child feel, only in the fact that it left me WANTING the final book ASAP. lol.

Well done.  I'm awaiting the fifth and final book of Sabina, Blue-Blooded Vamp.

I read this book for my own enjoyment.

Book Blog Chat (23) Finished!

We have come to the end of Silver-Tongued Devil by Jaye Wells.  I don't know about you all, but I was flipping pages to get there. lol.  I CAN'T Wait for Blue-Blooded Vamp to come out in June. wow!

Okay, all is game this round as we are done with the book.

Warning:  There WILL BE SPOILERS in the comments, and very potential in the starter questions we have listed here.

So here are a few starter questions to get us chatting:

Robyn:
1.)  Abel.  Who is he?  If Sabina is the next Lilth.  Could they be connected somehow?  I don't know why but I thought, Hmm, Tristan is missing?  Maybe he's Abel.  I don't know, I think it's my way of figuring out Abel.  Thoughts?
2.)  We are coming down to the final book.  Will we see more death of our favorite characters?
3.)  Maisie.  I kind of saw that coming but part of me had hope, she would be fine in the end.  Never thought she would die.  Did you think she would survive?
4.)  What questions would you like answered that haven't been answered in the series yet?

Melissa:
1.)  Sabina owes a few favors to Asclepius.  Do you think he will call on them and what do you think Sabina will be asked of?
2.)  We are heading back to New Orleans.  Do you think things will be okay with PW, Georgina, and even with Mac?  PW and Georgina left kind of not happy.  Will more personal issues come up with Giguhl and Sabina, and Sabina and Adam?  Will Sabina release Giguhl?
3.)  What do you make of the new tattoo on Sabina's left shoulder?
4.)  Sabina saw her mom, but that brought up questions as well.  This place, was her vision quest really a vision or was it her mind placing her here in her dream state?  What has happened to "us" as Sabina's mother mentions?  What has Cain done to them?

Silver-Tongued Devil
Sabina Kane #4
By:  Jaye Wells
Due Out:  January 5, 2012

I've read the first 3 books and just loved Sabina and her sidekick, Giguhl. lol.  Loads of action and fast paced story.  Can't wait for this one!

Goodreads Synopsis:
Life is looking up for Sabina Kane. Now that her scheming grandmother is dead, the threat of war has passed and the rulers of the dark races are about to sign a treaty to ensure ongoing peace. Her relationship with sexy mage Adam Lazarus is strong and all her friends are around her. Even her magic training is progressing further than she ever expected. The only two dark spots in her otherwise settled life are her guilt over her sister Maisie's fragile mental state and Sabina's own sinking sense that she's got unfinished business with Cain, the mysterious cult leader she let get away months earlier. When a string of murders rock the New York dark races community and threatens to stall the peace negotiations, Sabina finds herself helping to find the killer. Her investigation leads her down troubling paths that have her questioning everything - and everyone - she knows. And the closer she gets to the murderer, the more Sabina realises this is one foe she may not able to kill.

Book Review: Green-Eyed Demon

Green-Eyed Demon

By:  Jaye Wells

Publisher:  Orbit Books

Publish Date:  February 2011

Format:  Paperback, 376pgs pocketbook size

Genre:  Fantasy, Urban Fantasy

Series:  Book 3 of Sabina Kane series:  Book 1 ~ Red-Headed Stepchild, Book 2 ~ The Mage in Black, Short Story (can be before bk 3) ~ Violet Tendencies

Recommendation:  Oh hell Yeah!!! On kick butt Vampire, and she has really come a long way from book one with her friends, and family. AMAZING plot, action, humor, and characters all in one place!

Book Synopsis:
Things To Do:
1.)  Rescue sister from kidnappers
2.)  Take on leader of entire vampire race
3.)  Survive

The clock is ticking for Sabina Kane.  With her sister taken by mysterious captors, the Dark Races on the brink of war and a sinister order manipulating everyone behind the scenes, she's really got her work cut out.

Using information provided by an unlikely ally, Sabina and her trusty sidekicks - the sexy mage Adam Lazarus and Giguhl, the Mischief Demon - head to New Orleans to begin the hunt for her sister.  Once there, they must contend with belligerent werewolves, magic-wielding vampires and, perhaps most frightening of all, humans.

But before Sabina can save those she cares about, she's got to save herself from the ghosts of her former life.  Because the past is haunting her.  Literally.

First Sentence:
On my extensive list of enemies, the top two spots belonged to Lavinia Kane and time.

My Thoughts and Summary:
SPOILERS for previous 2 books present.

Three days after The Mage in Black where the big battle had taken place and Maisie is now missing, kidnapped, and only just a few short days after Violent Tendencies, we pick up with Sabina having her own kidnapping in mind.  We find out there is more than just saving Maisie involved.  There's politics mixed in between the different races due to the war coming and Sabina's not good with politics.  Will this affect the rescue of Maisie?  Will this stop the war from coming or plunge all the races head first into it?  Sabina works with Adam and Giguhl to find her sister but does she have to work with them to save her sister, or does she need to go it alone...

First off I'm going to start with saying I L-O-O-O-V-E-D this book.  I love the characters, Adam, Sabina, Giguhl, and the new ones we meet too.  I loved the action.  I loved the humor that made me laugh out loud and read sections two or three times to enjoy them again!  And the story has depth and perfect direction.  All great things, but when they are mixed together so perfectly... end result, a great book to enjoy and not be able to put down.  Jaye Wells has jumped to the top of my favorites list.

So, after that paragraph do you still need me to go on?  Okay, I will. :)

The plot had a depth to it to give us a story to read and get into where people could double cross each other with their own plans of their own regarding the issue of War between the races.  And you might be surprised who's on what side.  The story also has more going on with Cain and Lilith and the possibilities of so much more with them.  Things of future works, I hope. ;) We get to visit different places; Los Angels, the Seelie Court, and New Orleans.

The book starts right into the action and doesn't easy up.  If there is a moment of no action, we are learning something important to go with the plot, but then dive right back into the action again.  Every section takes advantage of the words used.  No section is dragged out but perfect lengths to give you the humor, action, and information and on to the next.  Jaye also does a great job of updating us with past events in the beginning of the book, so if there is a time between reading the last book you will have no troubles with being refreshed.

The characters... Sabina has grown so much for and through this book, as compared to where she started.  She still has a tough streak, which I hope she never losses, but she has started to let others in, and accept it.  We have Giguhl, Sabina's minion, and he shows a softer side at times in this book.  Then we have the hot and sexy, love potential for Sabina, Adam.  And we get a full book with him.  He is one great character.

I will definitely be looking for Silver-Tongued Devil January 2012!

I purchased this book for my own enjoyment

Blog Book Chat (12)...

Here we are! Are you feeling like a little Green?  Green-Eyed Demon by Jaye Wells that is. ;) I hope many of you will join us in this chat.

I'm thrilled to finally be posting this post.  There is so much to talk about with this great book.  So many happenings, and thoughts for me.

If you have not read the book, please be warned there will be SPOILERS in the comments, and maybe considered so in the starting questions too.

Here are a few questions to get us started, but we will chat on just about anything you throw in the mix in the comments.

Robyn's Questions:
1.)  Did you keep waiting for Adam to find out the truth about Slade?
2.)  No more owl.  Are you disappointed?  We had gotten so use to seeing it and now it's no longer there.
3.)  Were you surprised to see David?  He seemed such a minor character and he comes back.  Do you think he'll be mentioned again?
4.)  Was I the only one who wanted to scream, NOOOOOOOOOOO, when Maisie killed Adam but let out a sigh of relief in the end?  Or maybe I was the only one who wanted to write Jay and go, why did you do that ???????? lol

Melissa's Questions:
1.)  There seems to be a threat of Cain coming back for Sabina.  Do you think he will?
2.)  What do you think of the evolution of Sabina's character from the beginning of the books until now?
3.)  How about Lilith herself sending David to help Sabina.  Did you see her being involved?  Your thoughts on her helping Sabina?

Who? What? Where? (15)

Who are you with? Where are you at? What's happening?

Share with us just a little bit of what is happening in the book you are reading, right where you are now.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.

(This is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )
I'm moving this post from Thursdays to Wednesdays as I have another idea for Thursdays.

I'm in the Seelie Court on my way to the Autumn Garden with Sabina and Giguhl to wait for Adam and the others since we aren't aloud in the Queens presence.  She's still pretty pissed at Sabina.  But, I'm really curious what results will come with the discussion with our hostage...

Book Review: Violet Tendencies

Violet Tendencies

By:  Jaye Wells

Publisher:  Orbit Short Stories

Publish Date:  April 2011

Format:  Ebook, short story

Genre:  Fantasy, Urban Fantasy

Series:  3.5 of Sabina Kane series; Book 1 ~ Red-Headed Stepchild, Book 2 ~ The Mage in Black

Recommendation:  Oh YES!  This is a great lead into Green-Eyed Demon.  And a little information on demons as well.

Synopsis:
Former assassin Sabina Kane heads to Los Angeles to find her kidnapped sister.  Helping her on the mission are her hot mage partner, her Mischief demon minion, and a Vanity demon named Valva.  The problem?  She's got to figure out how to find her sister without letting her enemies know she's back in town.  But when Sabina seeks out an old ally -- a vampire strip club owner named Fang -- for help, Sabina learns the hard way that Vanity demons don't know the meaning of the phrase "low profile."

First Sentence:
The Tit Crypt hadn't changed much over the years.

My Thoughts and Summary:
The day after the mess in the end of The Mage in Black, Sabina travels back to L.A. with Adam, Giguhl, and Valva to look for her kidnapped sister.  Sabina goes to an old friend she feels she can trust, an owner of a local vampire strip bar ~ Fang, looking for a place to crash undetected.  Trying to stay under the Dominae radar while the Dominae are circulating flyers with a bounty on her head for the "safe" return home to her Grandmother.  Valva, the vanity demon, spices things up some...

Even in this short story that was a quick read for me, Jaye had my attention the whole time and now has me pumped and ready to dive into Green-Eyed Demon.  There is the sarcastic humor of the characters mixed with action.  I have to say I did learn a few things in this read as well; as there are two different types of demons and more on Valva the Vanity demon.  I really do enjoy reading about Sabina more too.  She seems to be softening up to her friends now that she has accepted them as such.

This short story is a great lead into Green-Eyed Demon.  It can be read after Green-Eyed Demon, but is the lead into the story from The Mage in Black.

I purchased this story for my own enjoyment.

This review qualifies for the Horror & Urban Fantasy Reading Challenge hosted by Book Chick City.

Blog Book Chat (12)...schedule

Our next book is one we are GREATLY looking forward to reading.  It just came out in February and we couldn't wait much longer to sneak it into the reading Chat schedule as we loved the first two books.

Now, this book we are going to do a little different.  Usually we read the books in 3 section.  But, Robyn and I don't know if we will be able to contain ourselves and stop when we need to.  And I wanted to try to give other commenter's a heads up ahead of time.

So, we are only going to do one stop!
Read the whole book and chat on it.

I hope many of you don't mind.  But I think we all might agree once we drop back into this world.

We will post the chat, April 28, 2011

So, what book is it you're asking.  Well,  Here it is:

Green-Eyed Demon
By:  Jaye Wells

Goodreads Synopsis:
The clock is ticking for Sabina Kane. She has to save her sister from her mysterious captors. And in order to do that, she has to broker a deal between the mages and the vampires before all hell breaks loose.

But as much as Sabina is focused on surviving the present, the past won’t be ignored. Before she can save those she cares about, she’s got to save herself from the ghosts of her past. Because the past is haunting her. Literally.
