My Thoughts and Summary:
*I requested this book for review from one of the authors.

Fighting and sex. What a combination! Both are moments of heightened emotions. Vikings are the perfect essence to use for this. They are strong in the emotion they portray. And there are so many legends and myths that could be used in their magical world.

Fathom by Mark Henry:
2.5/5
It's Jerrik's funeral. Solveig is heartbroken that her husband died in battle. But Solveig doesn't believe her brothers story of Jerrik's death. Somethings off, and her brother's a terrible liar. She decides the truth is on the boat that will fill with the clan warriors and head out to fight for Jerrik's revenge. She sneaks on and stows away to learn the truth. The truth is far more than what Solveig is ready for. And she accepts it.

Solveig's determination never sways. She has a deep love for her husband and will do anything for it and to find the truth of what happened to him. We see her with her husband before he left to battle. There is a deep connection there and with others present in the story.

The story felt a bit rough around the edges for me though. I didn't feel like I was into the story. I thought it was because of the erotic essence here, but it's one of the stories I didn't feel the flow through it in this collection.

Salvage Want by Annice Sands:
4.5/5
Elena's father has arranged for her to marry again. She'll be well taken care of and living in the luxury she deserves with the young man. The morning of her wedding, the town is raided by the savages that have been attacking through the land. Elena is taken by the leader of the clan because of her beauty. Wulf holds her in his tent, but seems better mannered than the man she was betrothed to.

I absolutely loved this story. Wulf is an amazing character. Elena too! The growth she makes here with her views is wonderful. The story flows and feels true to the characters. The writing is of a style I enjoy and could get lost in. It had a rhythm that kept me going with the story.

Oh I loved the surprise we come across at the end. Nice fantasy feel to the story.

Wildflower in Snow by Paul Goat Allen:
4.5/5
Heima is dwindling in number of residents from the attacks by Cree and disease. Gyda, the chieftains wife, is not in a loving relationship with her husband. But Gyda is in one with Soren. The village is doomed with the constant attacks back and forth between Cree and Heima, and the cleric knows it's coming. He's seen it.

This is a full story. It feels longer than the others but we get so much here. There's a world created, Gyda's life is lived, along with learning of Soren's answers to his life as well. I love that Gyda's body is not what many would call perfect. She's scarred from life of a warrior along with having children. And she's loved for it. She's proud of her body and all she's lived through. There is a magical and mysterious feel to Soren. When Gyda is with Soren, he seems to take her to another world. There is a reason for this, and we learn it through Soren and who he is. The cleric, Visman, has a great view on how the fighters are raised now. I really liked the implication and what is being said as it's a truth.

I couldn't stop reading the story of Gyda and Soren. Their fight to survive and love. Oh! I was even starting to tear up at the events. Then! Surprise! Paul wrote this to catch your heart, and that he does.

Mark of the Raven by Alyssa Breck:
4/5
Kara waits for her love of her youth to arrive at their meeting point. Instead, a tall, beautiful man approaches her saying it's her time to "come home". Kara has no choice and is taken. She now has a purpose and duty, which she can soon retire from. But her desire for the loved one she was taken from will set her on a new path.

The beginning of this story had me curious. Stories of Valkyries and warriors, then the manner of which Kara was taken. I wanted more!

Kara is a determined woman. But she holds her honor and duty close to her and does as she's to do, never giving up on the love she once felt and would love to have back. Kara is to escort the worth warriors to the secret halls, and there comes a time she returns to her home village to do just that. She goes to see Gram, her love. She's still in love with him and he's never moved on. The sign, the raven, is there and he will fall in battle soon, so Kara has to make a choice on what to do. They do get their time together and it's beautiful.

I enjoyed the story of the way of a Valkyrie and the blend with love. I fell for Alyssa's writing style with the characters and felt their connection.

The Wolf Who Swallowed the Sun by Saranna DeWylde:
3.5/5
Aphrodite "Jack" Jackson doesn't fall for all the lines men give. She's heard all and then some with being a prison guard for sex offenders. But today is a first when a werewolf attacks. She is saved by a beautiful man arrives to help her after a severe bite on her arm. Finn carries her off to safety, away from the attacking wolves. Soon Finn realizes who Jack is and has a job to do. Jack starts to fall for the man who saves her, even after he tells her what he's to do.

This story has a current time setting. It feels more urban fantasy than of the viking legends, but there is a legend that this story plays off of.

Jack is a strong woman who doesn't fall for the woos of men. Yet she does find herself attracted to Finn. The connection between the two is deeper than she knows yet it's all so new as well.

The story was good and I may have enjoyed it more but the story feels like it's not complete to me. I felt like the story didn't have a solid ending, that I should have more to bring me to a feeling of completion. But didn't get it. I feel as if we get a piece to a bigger world and series.

Book Review: Road Trip of the Living Dead

Road Trip of the Living Dead

By:  Mark Henry

Publisher:  Kensington Books

Publish Date:  March 2009

Format:  Paperback 307pgs, pocketbook size

Genre:  Fantasy

Series:  2nd book in Amanda Feral series; Book 1~Happy Hour of the Damned

Recommendation:  If you enjoyed the snatchy humor of Amanda in Happy Hour of the Damned you should try this one as well!  All while on the road.
Book Synopsis:
With her zombie gal pal Wendy and vampy sidekick Gil, celebrity party girl Amanda Feral is ready to take a big bite out of Seattle's supernatural nightlife.  But what's a zombie chick to do when her "Mommie Dearest" gets sick?  If you're Amanda Feral, you can either ignore the wicked old witch or bury the past by visiting Ethel before she kicks it.

Packing their stiletto pumps and plasma into a sketchy rat-trap on wheels that used to be a Winebago, Amanda, Wendy, and Gil hit the highway.  Of course, they'll have to navigate past some neo-Nazi skinheads, a horny dust devil, a hunky werewolf cop, and an unsightly horde of Kmart shoppers.  But for this glamorous gang of ghouls, this trip is about to take a dangerous detour that could give road kill a brand new meaning...

First Sentence:
Gil brought lawn chairs to the cemetery - not stylish Adirondacks, not even semi-comfortable camp chairs (the ones with those handy little cup holders).

My Thoughts and Summary:
We are six months after the end of Happy Hour of the Damned, and everyone has pretty much moved on since the zombie outbreaks.  Gil has started his own Resurrection business, making money turning people undead.  While waiting for a client of Gills, recently deceased wealthy-rich man, to rise from the grave Amanda mentions to Wendy and Gil she received a call from her mothers hospice care nurse saying her mother is in ending stages of stomach cancer.  With the rising of the new vampire things start to go seriously wrong.  A ghost who hates vampires does something to the newly birthing vampire as he is breaking from the earth.  Markham is now pissed (ha ha...) and wants a refund and threatens to kill Gil.  But Gil hopes a few days away will calm him to the point of talking and not killing.  Leaving town for a road trip to Amanda's mom's, the crew goes ~ some wanting and willing, and one dreading it.

Oh this road trip is a tragic comedy of events.  But we are with a group of meat eating undead here and there are crazy happenings with the crew as they are chased through the country to Amanda's dieing moms.  Fun.  As the trip starts off as a way to get away from troubles awaiting in town, the start to think they might be being followed.  But then when they think they've lost their stalkers other events take place and we meet new characters that being a new twist to the story and new destination stops in the road trip.  All stops end in a wild happening.  And the humor like in Happy Hour.

We learn more of Amanda's upbringing through her memories of her mom while meeting new characters that fit, and don't fit, into the group.  There are new men and women.  And each finds their own place here, if they have one.  Amanda is the great sassy character I remembered her to be.  Wendy seemed to be not as active for me in this book.  But we do meet some new characters which I enjoyed, Honey and Scott.  I love the connections the feel with a few of the characters.  Nice! But, there's a murder mystery too!  Not knowing who is doing the murders and working on the suspects.  So, who is killing these people?  Which ones will end up lunch meat?  You'll have to read to find out.

I purchased this book of my own accord for my reading pleasure.

Blog Book Chat (11)...Stop 2

We are on the road with Amanda and her friend in Road Trip of the Living Dead and have come to our second rest stop.

There is a lot happening in this road trip I wasn't expecting.

So what part would you like to chat on?  Pick one and we will go at it.

If no picks, Robyn and I have a few questions to get us started...

Robyn's Questions:
1.)  Amanda tells Wendy she is sorry but is it me or do you think Wendy is hiding something even after all that?
2.)  What do we think of Scott?
3.)  Do you think Honey will get to see her brother, alive or will she be dead in order to see him?

Melissa's Questions:
1.)  Who do you think is responsible for killing Granita?
2.)  What do you think of the visions Amanda saw with Madame Gloria?
3.)  Could the Mushrooms Fishhooks ate be what is giving him the clairvoyant moments?  So who is coming and why?

Who? What? Where? (13)

Who are you with? Where are you at? What's happening?

Share with us just a little bit of what is happening in the book you are reading, right where you are now.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.

(This is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )
I'm moving this post from Thursdays to Wednesdays as I have another idea for Thursdays.

I'm in the car on our road trip with Amanda, Wendy, and Gil trying to get into the closed Campground which Wendy'd telephone psychic told us about in order to keep Gil out of the dawning sun.

Blog Book Chat (11) ~ Schedule

We have our pick for the first Blog Book Chat in April!

Yes, April will be upon us shortly.  Hard to believe.

We are going back to a series we started just a short time ago.  We enjoyed the read with the fun partying zombie girl, Amanda Feral.  Yes, we are going on a Road Trip with her and her friends in:

Road Trip of the Living Dead
by Mark Henry
Celebrity party girl Amanda Feral is back from the dead, and hungrier than ever for a good time. With her zombie gal pal Wendy and vampy gay sidekick Gil, this stone cold fox is dressed to kill, on the prowl, and ready to take a big juicy bite out of Seattle's supernatural nightlife. But what's a zombie chick to do when her 'Mommie Dearest' gets sick? If you're Amanda Feral, you can either ignore the wicked old witch - or bury the past by visiting Ethel before she kicks it. Amanda's not thrilled about the idea of crossing three states just to be criticized. But Wendy, who's always looking for fresh meat, is up for the adventure. And Gil, who just launched his 'luxury' resurrection business, needs to disappear because a pissed-off client is out for his blood. First, they pack their stiletto pumps and plasma into a skeevy rattrap on wheels that used to be a Winnebago. Then, with a little help from a Korean-ghost hood ornament, a masochist named Fishhook, and a slew of 'moderately accurate' psychics, they hit the highway - their way. Of course, they'll have to navigate past some neo-Nazi skinheads, a horny dust devil, a hunky werewolf cop (who could pass for an underwear model) and an unsightly horde of supermarket shoppers. But for this glamorous gang of ghouls this trip is about to take a dangerous detour that could give road kill a brand new meaning.

I am hoping many of you will join us in the fun with Amanda.  Mark Henry has really taken the zombie side and created a sarcastic fun read with it.

I'm looking forward to reading this one.

Stop 1 ~ April 7, 2011 ~ page 100, End of Ch 8
Stop 2 ~ April 14, 2011 ~ page 208, End of Ch 16

Interview With Urban Fantasy Author Mark Henry!

I'm thrill to have an interview with an amazing author with a wonderful sense of humor.  Will you all help me welcome, Mark Henry!

M:  Hi Mark!  Thank you for joining me here on the blog today.

M:  Okay, for anyone who may not know who you are (and I can’t see that being true, they should all know who you are, hint, hint), can you tell us just a little of Amanda Feral and this great series of the dead.

MH:  I find that the vast majority of urban fantasy readers have no clue about the series, really. I hear it a lot. It wasn’t pushed by the publisher beyond the first book and most of the marketing happened here on the internet, guest blogs and such. You guys are really invaluable to promotion. But back to the series. I’ll nutshell it for those who don’t know. Amanda and her friends are some snarky ass bitches, and they eat people, and they don’t care. The books are mostly about friendship and what happens to burnouts who only survive through cocktails and mockery. Sound dark? Yeah, it is. But there’s lots to root for, as Amanda goes from an absolutely wretched human being to a halfway decent zombie.

M:  I'd like to thank you from all bloggers for making us feel important with these little blogs. :)

M:  I have to mention the unique point of view writing style you used to tell Amanda’s story in Happy Hour of the Damned.  I really enjoyed this.  It felt from time to time as she was sitting right beside me telling me the story.  Did the story just come out this way?  Amanda just took over the pen and started writing?

MH:  I’ve mentioned before, just recently, how sometimes writing can be a fugue state. Not in the sense that I sit down at the computer and hand myself over to another personality, but rather I merely lose track of time. It’s like method acting, particularly when you write a book in the first person. You take on the role of the character and just go. I definitely wanted the book to read as a very personal experience. The footnotes were these dirty whispers you’d hear, as though Amanda were right there. It had to be like that, because everything is made fun of in such a dark and twisted way, the reader needs a confidante to deal with the shame they feel at laughing. It’s manipulative, in that sense.

M:  What got you into writing Urban Fantasy?

MH:  Like so many who started writing this kind of stuff when it was just beginning its surge into the market, I had no clue what Urban Fantasy even was. I just knew I was writing about creatures that typically showed up in horror, but in a sometimes sympathetic way. I really liked the idea of populating a world with supernatural creatures and really leaving the human characters paper thin. They’re a foil for my satire about poverty and social issues and nothing more.

M:  I will admit, I’m not a zombie kinda person.  I see them as brain eating, skin decaying, mindless blobs.  But I have to say you really took something with a bad rap and made it human and fun.  So how did you come to doing this with of all creatures, zombies?

MH:  I’ve always loved zombies, since I was in the single digits. 9, I think. Night of the Living Dead was my first exposure and their was just so much more to the walking dead than the other monsters I’d been exposed to up until that point. They’re this horrifying mirror of us and to dismiss them as just these gross things that eat people is to really take a simplified look. Of all the fictional creatures, zombies are the most likely to be ripe with metaphor and satire. So, when I was deciding to leave the field of social services and take up writing, zombies were a great fit to take some jabs at the systems I was leaving behind. If you look at Amanda’s victims and her internal dialogue about them, you’ll get a pretty clear picture of what was going on in my state in terms of poverty and how the poor are dealt with…and still are, probably worse.

M:  You mentioned not so long ago that Book 2, Road Trip of the Living Dead, is coming out in Mass Market Paperback in February?

MH:  Yep. It’s out right now. And the cover looks way better in this format, glossy and attractive as the lip gloss they use on corpses right before the funeral.

M:  And I believe there was news of Amanda going Graphic.  And no, not the kind of graphic your dirty little minds are thinking.  Graphic Novel that is.  Can you give a little information on it?  When will it be out?

MH:  Oh no. I do very much intend to test the limits of the medium in the Road Trip of the Living Dead comic books and graphic novel. So plan on seeing gore, vulgarity and as much kinky sex as they’ll let me get away with. The Dabel Brothers are looking at a Summer 2012 release, last time I checked.

M:  I think the sounds so cool! I'm definitely going to have to remember to get this. :)

M:  There where a lot of great lines in Happy Hour of the Damned from many of the characters.  Do you have a favorite one?  That one that might have stuck with you and you just enjoyed writing it in.

MH:  At this point, I barely remember specifics about the book. You have to remember, I wrote it five years ago!

M:  Will we hear more from our pale friend Amanda Feral?

MH:  Definitely. In fact, I’ve taken on her persona as my pseudonym for my erotica. The first book, Stocking Full of Coal, is out now from Ellora’s Cave, a super dark and really fun tale of a bruise fetishist. As for more Amanda, Wendy and Gil. They’ll likely show up in some short stories and novellas. Fans can keep a lookout on my website for news about the ghoulie gang.

M:  If you had a chance to ‘hang out’ with any of the characters from the book, which one would you pick first?

MH:  Please. I do hang out with them. The way Amanda and her friends talk is nearly identical to my chosen social group. Muahhaha!

M:  Mark, are there any questions out there that you always wanted to be asked and just never got asked?  Would you like to answer it today?

MH:  Nope.

M:  And one question I like to ask on my interviews… If you could travel any where in the world, where would you like to visit?

MH:  I really need to get to India. Like tomorrow!

M:  Thank you for the great interview Mark!  I really appreciate you taking the time to chat with me.

Book Review: Happy Hour of the Damned

Happy Hour of the Damned

By:  Mark Henry

Publisher:  Kensington Fantasy

Publish Date:  March 2008

Format:  Paperback, pocketbook size 295 pgs

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  1st book in Amanda Feral series

Recommendation:  Oh Yes! This is full of zombie fun, but you have to have a sense of humor.  Enjoy!

Book Synopsis:
THE THING NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT DYING IS JUST HOW MUCH FUN IT CAN BE.

Alive, ad exec Amanda Feral worked hard to wring enjoyment out of her days.  Now that she's a zombie, it's a different story.  Turns out, Seattle is home to glamorous undead of every description, and Amanda - stylish and impeccably groomed even in the afterlife - is swigging cocktails and living large (so to speak) among its elite.  But there are downsides.  Not being able to stomach anything except alcohol and human flesh, for instance.  And the fact that someone is targeting Seattle's otherworldly inhabitants for their own sinister reasons.

Preying on the undead is seriously uncool.  The only option is for Amanda and her zombie BFF Wendy and gorgeous gay vampire pal Gil to unearth the culprit among the legions of Seattle's bloodsuckers, shapeshifters, reapers, succubi, and demons - before they all meet a fate a lot worse than death...

First Sentence:
Saturday night is all about the Well of Souls - see and be seen is the rule - there is no excuse for an absence, least of all a bad hair day.

My Review and Summary:
Amanda's had a rough life, and it's not held her back one bit.  She's serious about life and a successful partner in an Advertising firm and is serious about life.  Until she smells the stinky breathe of that man in the elevator and has a clumsy accident afterward.  All to find out... she is now a zombie.  So what is a beautiful, successful woman to do now that she is one of the undead?  Why, enjoy life to the fullest!  But first, to find make-up to take care of the pasty pale skin. But when a friend goes missing will Amanda go in search or try to save her drying skin?  Amanda ends up on a mystery case looking into the incidents of what happened to her friends, just to stumble upon a bigger mystery with the pesky mistake zombies showing up in herds at Starbucks.

Amanda is a character I enjoyed.  She is hard, bitchy, and self-centered.  Amanda makes flying leaps at growth in her character in this book.  She makes friends with others similar to her in her manor of thinking.  We learn how Amanda meets each of these characters through their fun incidents in the first section of the book.  Then after we get to know them we find somewhere along the way Amanda has started to worry about them.  And starts to enjoy life.  Amanda and her friends make comments and jokes of things that many might find mean, but it is said in fun with these characters.  I had to chuckle many times with the jokes made and the priorities of the characters.  Oh, and who would want to break into a funeral home?  I loved that scene.

I enjoy the writing style in this book.  Mark Henry uses a unique writing style as we are getting the story from Amanda's view.  There are footnotes sporadically through the book in which Amanda makes comments to add her inner thoughts at the moment.  For me this was fun and a humorous way to get to know Amanda's character a little better.

I will definitely be picking up the second book, Road Trip of the Living Dead.

I purchased this book on my own for read.

Book Chat (7)...Happy Hour of the Damned

So, we have come to our first stop at Happy Hour... of the Damned. :)  Do we need a few drinks to get this chat started?  Let me call the bartender over to help us out and we will get going.

In the mean time if you would like to refresh yourself with our chat breaks, you can check out the schedule HERE.

Robyn, from The Bookoholic Zone, and I have pulled together some questions to start the discussions.  And we have checked in with the author Mark Henry for any chat discussion thoughts on the sections.  He has graciously sent us a few questions as well.

So, now that we have our Happy Hour drinks, are you ready to get chatting?  I'm feeling chatty.  How about you?

Mark's Questions:
1. Is this novel a satire of the urban fantasy genre?
2. What is the author's intent with the footnotes? Are they successful?
3. Amanda is an antiheroine in the strictest sense of the word. Is the reader supposed to like her?
4. What is the point where you realized that this book was NOT like other urban fantasies?

Robyn's Questions:
1. Martin seems to be safe right not but for how much longer?
2. If you turned zombie, would you break in and steal make-up? Or would you go all natural?
3. How long do you think she'll stay at her job before people start to wonder?

Melissa's Questions:
1.  What do you think happened to Liesl?  And what was in that box?
2.  What do you think of Amanda meeting and making new friends?
3.  Amanda seemed kind of shocked she could do the breathe thing.  What do you think of that?  Will she make another zombie?

The funeral home heist was considerably more complicated; first off, how would I get in?  The exterior windows were either too high to reach of firmly imprisoned by iron bars.  Through the wired glass in the locked rear door, I looked in on a dark hallway.

There are so many amazing books already on the shelves and new ones coming out.

But I will highlight one here each week.

The Next Book Is..

Black Wings
By:  Christina Henry
Due Out:  November 30, 2010

This is a new book, series, and even author for me.  I found this by visiting Dark Central Station, a blog of seven authors.  The authors on the site are:  Wayne Simmons, Nancy Holzner, Thomas Emson, Erin Kellison, Christina Henry, Sean Cummings, and Gary McMahon.  Would you like to visit there too?  HERE'S THE LINK.

Goodreads Synopsis:
Meet Maddy Black.
She’s an Agent of Death who really needs to get a life.

Escorting souls into the afterlife leaves Maddy little time for socializing—until devilishly handsome Gabriel Angeloscuro agrees to rent the empty apartment in her building. But when demons start appearing on Maddy’s front lawn, she realizes there’s more to her new tenant than meets the eye.
