It's the End of World as We Know It (and I feel...okayish?)

Today is a happy yet sad day. Happy: It's the release of the last book in Demons of Oblivion series by Skyla Dawn Cameron. Sad: It's the release of the LAST Book in Demons of Oblivion series by Skyla Dawn Cameron. Always a bit of bitter sweetness there in those words.

I'm excited to share about the book and have this guest post by Skyla.

Please give a warm welcome to Skyla!

It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel...okayish?)

Today has been a very long time coming: it’s the release of the final Demons of Oblivion novel.

The first book in this series was written throughout 2004 and 2005. I was a very young writer, had just signed my first contract for another book (River) when Zara Lain tapped me on the shoulder and I dove into her story head-first. Immediately after I typed the epilogue of Bloodlines, the rest of the series and full five-book arc bloomed in my head: I’ve known for over a decade where this final book would end.

I often mourn books when I finish them. After typing the last words of a zero draft, I still feel the story buzzing under my skin. Sometimes I’ll go back and reread a few sections, other times I’ll dive into the sequel’s first couple of chapters. After living and breathing a story for so long, it’s very difficult to let go, and I even miss the books that are the hardest to write. So it was expected I’d mourn Oblivion as well once it was done, especially because I’ve lived with these characters in my head for so long.

I didn’t feel any of the things I expected to. There’s been no mourning, no stages of grief.

First and foremost, I was relieved.

As frustrating as it is for readers to wait for books in a series (and believe me, I know), it’s a nightmare for writers. Four years have passed between the release of the fourth book (Exhumed, July 2012) and the fifth (Oblivion, August 2016). It has plagued me all this time, and I felt guilty every time I had to backburner it. I also nearly didn’t finish it, because the entire process of writing it was so difficult. The tremendous pressure I felt—to not only close out the series but do the characters justice and provide closure for readers—was staggering.

It’s also difficult for me to mourn something that isn’t actually over. Yes, this is unequivocally the last published book: the cost of publishing isn’t worth the few sales since this is how I make my living, and illegal distribution of the books killed any chance of resurrecting publication plans. But the stories aren’t over: my head is filled to the brim with the next arc of books, and I’ve already started the sixth. Oblivion is the end of the arc—it’s by no means the end of the story. The surviving characters haven’t stopped talking, haven’t gone anywhere—I know how their journey continues.

I haven’t said goodbye to anyone and I probably never will even if the other books are never written—they’re a part of me. But at least I know there’s a satisfying conclusion, that it’s finally off my plate for good, and I can move on to publishing other work.

Other than relief, the second biggest thing I felt was gratitude.

I didn’t expect, a dozen years ago, precisely how long it would take to get to this moment I saw in my head after I first wrote Bloodlines, but here we are. I’ve repeatedly told the story of how Mel is responsible for seeing this series resurrected; I can tell you without a doubt this book wouldn’t exist without her.

It also wouldn’t exist without the readers I knew I owed some closure, or the Patrons of Snark who support me every month. The people who have been waiting years for this book, patiently and without demands, nagged on my conscience and pushed me to keep at the book. I am incredibly grateful to Melissa and my other readers for their devotion to these stories. You are few but you are mighty.

The end of a series is bittersweet, there’s no doubt. There’ll always be part of me that wishes things had turned out differently and that more stories with these characters would see the light of day. But ultimately I got to tell a complete story and share it with the most amazing readers in the world, and that means more than any “what if” I could imagine.

I’d like to take a moment to sincerely thank Melissa of My World for everything she’s done for me and these books. She does so much work, tirelessly supporting me, promoting the books, telling friends, beta-ing...I can’t even begin to express my gratitude. I am so honored to have had her on this journey with me, for her unwavering belief in the books, and for inviting me back here today to see the series close.

I feel like writing Oblivion I went through the same apocalypse the characters did. I’m exhausted, bone-weary, and grateful to have survived. And like them, I wouldn’t’ve gotten this far without friends. So thank you, Mel.

Oblivion
Earthquakes. Plagues. Rivers of blood. The ever-so-popular rain of toads. When end of the world fare is on the rise, it’s well past business as usual in a city where the veil between dimensions is thin.

Quarter-demon Persephone Takata isn’t so keen on killing herself anymore. This time when death approaches, she’s ready to take a stand and fight to protect the woman she loves, along with everyone around them as the apocalypse swings into full force.

Meanwhile, trapped in her home dimension where her antichrist father’s rule is weakening, Mishka Thiering’s hopes for revenge on the living are put on hold when she stumbles across the truth the Court has kept hidden for centuries. Her death was the last piece of the puzzle, leading to a change in the dimensional landscape, affecting humans and demons alike.

Despite its fractured numbers, the shadowy organization who has kept tabs on Peri and Mishka for years is still very much in the game, ready to set into motion their final plan. For there is something much, much worse waiting in the wings—something old, something powerful, and something far more terrifying than Oblivion or any of the creatures it’s spawned.

Alliances, betrayals, casualties.

This is war. And only one sister can win.

Despite its fractured numbers, the shadow government who has kept tabs on Peri and Mishka for years is still very much in the game, ready to set into motion their final plan. For there is something much, much worse waiting in the wings—something old, something powerful, and something far more terrifying than Oblivion or any of the creatures it’s spawned.

My Thoughts and Summary:
It comes down to one of the two quarter-demon sisters will bring Oblivion to land. Neither figured it would be the way it is to happen. Peri was warned, but she didn't want to believe it. But she will be involved in stopping the world she knows from dying, along with news she thought she'd never hear again. Mishka is in Oblivion and learns what her father's plans are for Oblivion. Both Peri and Mishka will have have to decide who's dearest to them, and protect them, at any cost. Would they die for their loved ones or will they kill for them?

Skyla still surprises me with new twists I didn't see coming. This book uses everything we've learned in the previous four books from each character and their experiences. The characters are forced, through events, to face their deepest fears and realities to move forward. Some are hard and easy discussions, but all take a toll on those around them.

We see all the great characters again. Those we didn't expect to see are still as important as the first time they graced the pages. All the characters will have to find in them to form allies with those they hate to save others they love. It is great seeing the characters face these realities and swallow them.

We get time with all our favorites. We see Mishka as she's in Oblivion. We FINALLY! get to meet demon daddy. Well, half demon daddy. He's an interesting person and the world he lives in feels so alive. Through Mishka we see some characters we've lost along the way, one of which we hadn't met yet and I loved seeing here. Mishka also gets the scoop in Oblivion about what her father has in store for Oblivion. She's one smart woman and I'm... attached to her. She's got one person on her mind the whole time, her son. And I can understand that!

Peri... Oh Peri. She has come such a long way, and she'll have to face some hard facts about her and the divisions she was once part of. She is the one that has some of the hardest choices in life. What she picks just might surprise you.

Ryann! Yes! I've been worried about her for some time. I've had my suspicions on who...what... she is. We start to learn of what Ryann is capable of and how valuable she is with the demon presence. She has so much more to give us! Ryann and Ellie are a great couple. I do enjoy Ellie's humor as he tries to lighten the mood.

I know everyone's waiting on Zara. She is one of my all time favorite characters with her hardness and quick lip. We see sparks of that Zara here, though she has changed. And after this book, I don't think she'll ever be truly the same again. Zara has lived through some serious emotional trauma and is starting to come through with having to take the reins of the group and lead once again. There is a glimmer of hope for Zara and Nathan, in the very end. I am holding out for them both.

This story brings back some of the old feel that I had with Zara back in the beginning. Then, Skyla dives into the world and what happens from there keeps me worried for all and shocked at what we learn. I'm amazed at how all the pieces we've learned from all our characters of Oblivion throughout the books have come together and given us these pages that make our jaws drop.

Skyla delves into my emotions for her characters, vibrating each emotion through events, making a song of happiness, sadness, and even contentedness that I feel through her words. Basically, Skyla's not afraid to rip out your heart, stomp on it, and place it back a little bruised and sore. But, it's back where it belongs! The characters come together to help save the world. Some won't make it out, but some will. And what's waiting on the other side may not be what everyone expected.

Cover Re-Reveal: Hunter

Thank you, Mel, for having me here today to talk about cover art challenges and to reveal the new face of Hunter.

This is now the third cover Hunter has had in three and a half years (well, four if you count the minor font change when I received my rights back and re-released the book myself). Each time it was done with a lot of caution and thought.

First, I am not one of those writers who changes her cover like she changes her underwear. There are benefits to changing the cover art, in case you think it’s hindering rather than helping sales, but especially with a series you always run the risk of undoing any previous work done to brand the book and it can end up frustrating readers. Plus, hands up if it drives you nuts to have three books in a series on your shelf and then get the fourth with a totally different cover model/design. (*looks around* Just me?)

So yeah, this is not an endeavour taken lightly.

Initially the covers in the series were done using entirely digital people. The reason for this direction was simple: I couldn’t find the kind of stock I wanted to represent the characters.

It was important to me to be true to Ryann: she’s biracial, she had to be simply clothed and non-sexualized, and she needed her weapons (particularly a katana). While she doesn’t use a wooden stake in the book, I felt it got the whole vampire/demon hunter point across.

Around mid-2012, about a year later, sales weren’t where I’d hoped with the books, and just in case the covers were a factor my publisher agreed to go in a new direction. This time I went with stock photos and specifically people’s faces.

Once again, I ran into huge problems with Ryann.

In a perfect world, I’d be able to hire an illustrator like Chris McGrath (my dream artist for these books) to give them custom covers with good representations of the characters. Unfortunately, my real world requires me to worry about groceries and rent. So I had to stick to stock photos. Right now, head over to some stock sites, and search for African American women with swords. Go ahead. Tell me what you find.

Or let’s say any weapon, really. I’m easy! How about a gun? A knife? Anything? Now make sure she’s non-sexualized (this character is a nun FFS) so she's not licking a sword or wearing a miniskirt. What kind of results did you get?

The sad truth is that when your character isn’t white (or is full-figured--don't even get me started on that), the amount and variation of stock photos drop drastically. This left me with the option of white-washing the character (GOD NO), picking a model that didn’t represent her (CRINGE), or letting go of the classic urban fantasy look and picking someone who at least looked/felt like Ryann.

I went with the third option.

And this has been the face of Ryann for the past two and a half years.

I was never entirely happy with it, however. While Zara on the Bloodlines and Exhumed covers doesn’t have a weapon, frankly she has a look on her face that says she doesn’t need one to kill you (same with the fifth, Oblivion, which features a witch). Lineage has Peri holding a big gun, however, and it always sort of bothered me that Ryann was just a pretty girl without at least a sword. This is urban fantasy, after all.

Every so often, I searched the usual stock sites just in case something new appeared, all the while humming, “I stiiiillll haven’t fooounnd what I’m looking foooorrr...” Eventually I ran into a stock site that, praise the cover artist gods, had women of colour in classic urban fantasy poses. I debated awhile which one I wanted to go with and finally selected a model, updating Hunter’s look to coincide with the re-release of the print edition and the new series bundle.

So without further ado, here is the new Ryann.

This is actress/model Kimberly Gresham, as photographed by Taria Reed of The Reed Files.

I am tremendously happy with this new photo. She’s non-sexualized—no leather in sight!—and she has her sword, but despite her obvious strength she manages to display that level of quiet contemplation that represents the character. And despite the series being cancelled, I now want to write MOAR RYANN BOOKS because I am so happy with this model as the character.

Even as a kid, I remember reading some books and getting so frustrated when the cover didn’t match the words inside. The characters didn’t look like they were supposed to, didn’t wear the right clothes, etc. But now I get it. So next time you’re looking at a cover, particularly with non-white characters on it, pause and think about the challenges that went behind designing it. And photographers? WE NEED DIVERSE PHOTOS FOR OUR DIVERSE BOOKS. Please and thank you.

Hunter can now be found on Amazon and CreateSpace in print, along with Lineage and Exhumed (a re-release of Bloodlines to match is coming soon).

It's also in The Demons of Oblivion Bundle—the first three books gathered in one release—now on Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Kobo, OmniLit, and available direct (for $1 off).

Got her talking more than I think I've ever heard out of her. Please welcome, Danni and Peri!  (Danni - Interviewer, Bold.  Peri - Interviewee, Purple)

Persephone Takata Interview
Today readers, I am lucky enough to be interviewing Peri Takata, the ¼ Demon from Lineage that everyone loves to hate. Except me, I think she rocks. She’s a straight forward, sharp tongued lady that I have a lot of respect for. She also scares the crap outta me, which is why I’m donning kevlar under my coat and increased my cardio workouts prior to this day, so I can like mad if I happen to piss her off with a nosey question she doesn’t like.

We’re meeting at a coffee shop, and I’ve chosen a table near the door for a quick exit, should the need arise.

*Peri arrives, grabs a large black coffee—darkest roast they have—and jerks over a chair. Its feet squeak on the floor and she sits, slouching, peering pointedly over the rim of her coffee cup as she takes a sip*

I can kill you faster than you can run, you know.

*Gulping slowly, I smile and we exchange pleasantries. I decide to get on with the interview as quickly as possible, knowing the Peri isn’t one for small talk.*

In the beginning of Lineage, when we first get the privilege of being introduced to you, you identify yourself as being friendless and un-likable. It was almost as if you wore your isolation as a suit of armour. How does it feel now, being part of a pseudo-family again and being in a relationship with Nic?

Family? Well, they’re more Nic’s friends than mine. Where she goes, I go. That’s pretty much the extent of it.

I’m sort of partial to that nun, though. We train together—I’m trying to toughen her up. Mostly I hope I’m there when something horrible happens to her someday. I think she’d be fun if she went real dark.

I have to agree, and I’m sure that you will be there to back her up if that ever happens. I suspect the rest are growing on you, except maybe Zara, but then the love/hate thing is mutual with her. I mean, you did screw her over, or tried to, rather.

Yeah, I did, but the thing about that is that she’d do the same to me. In a heartbeat. Zara and I get along when our interests align. When they don’t, well...there’s no loyalty there.

It seemed you had an ‘instant’ connection with Nicolette when you first met; you were softer to her, recognising something of yourself in her eyes. Would you say that Nic ‘saved’ you from yourself?

*shifts uncomfortably* Nic...Nic is more like me than people realize. We just went on different paths, that’s all. Maybe I wouldn’t still be here if not for her. Maybe I would. If I was, I’d still be spinning my wheels going nowhere. When I put one foot in front of the other, that is Nic’s doing.

Nic and you both share similar histories with the loss of loved ones; do you think if she wasn’t so squeamish, she may have chosen a way of coping not unlike yours (which was to kill everyone)? You can see Ryann going dark if she ever faced a tragedy like yours, do you think Nic has that darkness in her somewhere, or is her ‘light’ strong enough to overcome anything?

I think the same thing pushes everyone to violence. You, me, Ryann, Nic, wife-beaters, suicide bombers, soldiers. Are you able to kill (like, do you have a weapon or think you're physically able)? Do you think you’re right when you do it? Are you cool with the consequences? Is there another way of getting what you want or is killing it? That’s all it comes down to for everyone.

I worked with mercs who came from a variety of backgrounds and they all killed because it worked for them. What brings you to that place, well, that varies. But I’ve seen enough to know everyone is capable of violence. Doesn’t mean they’re gonna act on it. Doesn’t mean it would be easy to push them to it. But it’s there.

You also stated that you were ‘your father’s daughter’ back when you were still in Bravo Division. Would you still describe yourself this way?

Well, yeah, I’m not all puppies and sunshine now. That’s my girlfriend. If I could get Zara’s goddamn cat alone, I’d probably skin it because it ate my good stealth boots. You can take the woman out of hell but you can’t take hell out of the woman.

Is there anything you would like to say to Lo, if you had the chance, and did you ever ask your mum WTF was she thinking, summoning a Demon to be her Baby Daddy?

She had her reasons, which I don’t think I’ll ever know but I figure she somehow thought it would buy her some kind of protection. It didn’t.

The bio dad...I dunno, maybe I’d ask to borrow the car?

You’ve copped a lot of bad flack for being who you are, your natural propensity towards violence, your ‘stupidity’ and your need for revenge. Personally, I believe you have been unjustifiably judged, given the events in your life, the amount of hits to your head and your time spent locked up in and being Bravo Divisions’ kill-bitch. As a matter of fact, I think your ability to read people’s body language and your perception of what’s ‘going down’ is damn skilled. How do you feel about the judgements people have made and what would you like to say to the Peri-haters out there?

Wait, people hate me?

Well, yeah, there is a faction of Peri-haters among the readers, but…um, I think you’re just misunderstood……….

I’m come from a long line of bad people. My mother escaped—for a little while—life in the yakuza. They’re not great to women, y’know? My bio dad is the antichrist. Then my kids were murdered instead of me. And then I worked as a mercenary who would’ve been disposable to the company if not for my demon DNA. How the fuck else am I supposed to be?

For skills and perceptions and that, well, you get a few brain cells knocked out from a lot of head injuries, your brain starts to overcompensate in other areas. I can be useful with certain things.

To the Peri-haters: join the fucking club. Really. There’s a club. It’s called The Peri Is A Cunt Club. Zara is president. There are probably membership fees. I hear they had a nice bake sale last year.

Bet you Zara didn’t bake anything for that. Do they have t-shirts?

She probably had her manservant do it.

If there are T-shirts, I’d get one.

You spent over 5 years with Bravo Division, before that you were a mum and a graphic designer, apart from a little revenge killing on the Japanese Mafia. I’m presuming most of your training came from Bravo Division; you used them for training and information. What was your time like during this period? You entered the division straight after the deaths of your family, and even though you were fuelled by vengeance, it must have been a scary, lonely place to be?

It was blurry. Not that sleep deprivation was their intention but grief has a way of blurring the days together, especially when you don’t sleep. Their compounds are also almost entirely underground. I didn’t see a lot of daylight, didn’t know what day it was. And I kept busy. Beat the fuck out of a lot of people. Got my ass handed to me a lot too. That passes the time.

I’m sure, but Bravo was all you had for a while there, and while you didn’t make any friends, it still must have cut deep when they betrayed you, especially Drew.

I didn’t expect to kill him. That’s weird with me, I expect I’ll have to kill everyone. I met Nic and kept wondering when I’d have to kill her. But I didn’t see him coming. It’s not about being friends, it’s just trusting things are a certain way and then getting knocked over.

The day Delarosa told you about your half-sister, you also discovered the existence of vampires. A double whammy, what was running through your mind at that time?

You have to roll with the punches and all that shit. If I stopped to flip out or adjust to every little weird thing that happened, I’d be shot dead in the field. So, I have (had...have?) a sister. And there are vampires. Freaking out won’t solve anything. Mostly I wanted to be pointed in the right direction so I could shoot stuff.
And in the heat of battle, this is a good thing, but what about after? Do you reflect at all upon the turn your life took and if not, do you think that continuing to bury it all and not deal with it is a good thing? Sometimes we all need a good flip out to clear the pipes, so we don’t implode.

I think you expect my brain to work harder than it actually can.

I am very good at imploding. I’ve always been self-destructive. Whether or not I can keep up with this current...nice-ish-ness sort of streak, I dunno.

When you first met Zara Lain, she ‘got the drop on you’. What were your first impressions of Zara?

Oh, the Vamp Slut. My impressions then were about the same are they are now. She needs to be knocked down a bunch of pegs.

You pray at your Kamidana, would you call yourself a religious person? How did finding out your father is the Demon Lo (Lord of Oblivion) effect, if at all, your religious beliefs?

Different names, different religions, all the same thing.

My mom went all Western. Ran away with my stepfather to the US, where I was born. She even had me baptized Christian—there was a photo, somewhere, of me screaming like I was allergic to the holy water. Which maybe I was.

Anyways, she embraced the Western thing but she spoke a lot of Japanese around the house when my stepfather wasn’t around, which I picked up, and she still did a few Shinto rituals plus kept a kamidana. I picked that up too.

I don’t consider myself religious. I believe. I just don’t...really follow anything I believe. Offerings to my family is about the most I do.

When you found out Ellie’s ‘special talent’, you noted that Nic probably expected you to ask him to contact your family, but you would never do that as you didn’t want Ken to see you now. Do you think that was your subconscious warning you what your hate and need for vengeance was doing to you?

Well, he was on the phone with me when he and the kids were blown up and I was saying horrible things to him. And yet somehow I managed to go even more downhill from there. I accept my life choices—doesn’t mean I’m proud of them or want to write home about it.

And what Nic thinks of you now seems to have more weight than what Ken would.

She still sees some good in me. Kenshiro didn’t, no matter what he pretended. I’m sure I’ll disappoint her at some point.

Ryann and you didn’t get off to the greatest of starts and she even paid out a few home truths on you, but now you seem to spend a fair bit of time with her. Would you say she is now a close friend and confidant? How does it feel to have a BFF now, after so many friendless years?

I don’t think of her as a friend or anything. But I don’t have anyone to train with. Zara doesn’t “train”—she’d probably break a nail. Ryann’s a wily thing. Makes my brain work. Sorta.

So……she’s just a training buddy?

She’s the only person I have to shoot in the head with paintballs.

Demons of Oblivion is one of the most politically correct (if you ignore all the killing) series that I have read, in terms of encompassing different races, sexual preferences and it’s feminist undertones with such strong female characters. Do you consider yourself to be somewhat of a role model in these areas?

People are people. Women are people. Bisexual women are people. Japanese people are people. White people are people. Usually. Nuns, I’m not sure about.

Feminist role model... If I can inspire little girls out there to unlock their own demonic power, cut through yakuza bosses, take on secret societies in suicide missions, and date hot chicks, well, sure. Job well done.

Would that be the kind of wisdom you would have imparted to your own daughter if she was still with you, or would you hope to keep her out of that world?

Don’t ask about my kids.

These days you are doing the domestic thing with Nic, back to graphic design work, a mortgage, the whole she-bang. You still get to play around with fire arms and explosives occasionally, no thanks to Zara, but it is still quite the contrast to how you spent the last 5-6 years. How are you coping with the change?

It’s...quieter, I guess. I have a lot more time to be in my own head. Thankfully there’s not much going on in there so it stays quiet.

I mean, I almost shot the UPS delivery guy the other day because he knocked while I was asleep. That kind of thing still happens.

I could understand that…..so, the quiet isn’t driving you nuts? No itchy trigger finger?

My girlfriend’s best friend is Zara Lain. Have you met her? It’s not quiet for long. If she’s not picking fights with the shadow government and jumpstarting the apocalypse, she’s getting on the bad side of ancient evil European gods. She’s worse than I am.

Where would you like to see yourself in the next 10 years?

Hopefully the mortgage gets paid off.

Fuck, I’m so damn boring now.

Ok, so we have the serious questions out of the way. I’d like to ask you some fun stuff, just to help the readers get to know you a little better (please don’t stab me). Here goes:

1. Favourite movie?

Oh I finally saw Pulp Fiction. Zara’s said I’d like it. She was right. Don’t tell her, though. She likes being right.

2. Favourite Book?

I’m not a big reader. I like books that remind me of my kids. My son had everything by Kazuo Iwamura—they’re picture books, with these dorky little animals, but he loved them. I don’t think I could stand to read any of them now, though.

3. Favourite thing to do?

For downtime? Paintball. Also knitting. Shut up, it’s relaxing.

And needles can come in handy as a weapon, right?

See, you get me.

4. It’s a Zara and Peri smack down re-match, who’s going win and why?

Me. She has it coming to her.

5. Person you’d most like to kill and why?

I kinda wish I’d killed Fraser Lake when I had the chance. He was my supervisor at Bravo Division. He also hated me and tried to have me killed. Yeah, I’d garrotte him if I had the chance now.

I have to admit, I was surprised when you didn’t kill him, but I was also shocked he let you go. I put that down to him knowing he couldn’t beat you in battle.

Fraser wanted to get rid of me, first and foremost. I don’t think he ever hated me personally, he just thought I was a danger to his men. And, I mean, accurate assessment.

Truth is, there’s no telling what I would’ve done if he’d tried to shoot me. I could’ve shot him, yes, and I think he’d take that risk. But last time I had a big emotional trauma, I immediately killed everyone in the vicinity. It was a bigger risk keeping me there than letting me go. But he bugged me. I’d still probably kill him if we ran into each other.

6. Favourite Weapon?

I’m very happy with my SIG Mosquitos—they require upkeep and care to keep from jamming but I like the weight of them and they’re quiet with their Gemtech Alpine suppressors. But as long as it’s hot a huge fucking gun like one of Zara’s, I’m good.

7. Song that should be your life soundtrack?

“I Stand Alone” by Godsmack.

8. Song you’d want to be played at your funeral?

I don’t want a funeral. I don’t think anyone would go to it anyway. Just toss my ashes in with my kids and I’m good.

9. What’s your ideal date or night out with Nic?

I don’t know if we’ve ever done an actual “date” thing. I don’t like going anywhere there are...people. Sitting home. Getting takeout and not doing dishes. I’m good with that.

10. Who’s more romantic? You or Nicolette?

We don’t really do romance. I killed a spider for her the other day, or so I thought, and she just got mad at me for not catching it and letting it go. Pretty sure if I brought her flowers, she’d whine it wasn’t a living plant.
So I take it they haven’t gotten you to join VETA yet?

Seriously, what the fuck? These fucking creatures of the night and their big campaign is for bovine rights and saving trees, what the fuck is wrong with this picture?

11. Do you have a zombie apocalypse plan?

Kill all the zombies.

Yep, that’ll work.

12. Who does more chores around the house, you or Nic?

Nic’s a fucking slob. Oh she’ll tell you it’s me. I track mud in, whatever—who leaves wet towels on the bathroom floor? Who doesn’t empty the dishwasher? Whose shirt went moldy in the washer because she forgot to put it in the dryer? My fucking shirt and it was her fault.

I’d also like to play a little ‘get to know you game’ if you don’t mind. It does assume that Nic has caught you up on some of the more recent pop culture though.

She was underground “dead” for ten years—she gets only marginally more than I do...

Pepsi or Coke? Pepsi

Vodka or Scotch? Nail polish remover. I’m not picky.

I couldn’t see you in a wine bar though. I kinda miss the liquor vending machines in Japan. Canada sucks.

Star Wars or Star Trek? I think I saw one of the Star Wars movies.

Winter or Summer? Fall.

Sweet or Salty? Salty.

Dean or Sam? Who?

Angel or Spike? Like...spikes to stab people with? *someone whispers an explanation* Wait, what?

Team Edward or Team Jake? (ducks flying object), it’s just a joke! You know I’m into pussy now, right?

So you’re more Team Bella? Wait, I think you’d like Jane from the Volturi, she’s cute and homicidal like you. You know way too much about this.

Book or Movie? Movies.

Have you been enjoying any chic flicks with Nic and Zara? No. Stupid women.

Car or Motorbike? Car

Ocean or Lake? Ocean

Xbox or Playstation? I...game on the computer. Sometimes. WoW. Only ’cause everyone makes me do it.

Cotton or Silk? Cotton

Mac or PC? Mac

Batman or Superman? Batman. My daughter liked Batman.

Dogs or cats? Dogs

And most importantly, Thor or Loki? Oh I know this one. I’d probably got back to men for that blond god.

13. What is your favourite Antichrist walks into a bar joke?

I don’t know any. Fuck, I feel kind of repressed now.

Can I tell you mine?

Sure.

The Antichrist walks into a crowded bar. When the people see who it is, they all run out except this one old man. So the Antichrist walks up to him and says, "Do you know who I am?" and the old man sips his beer and answers "yep". The Antichrist says, "Well, why aren't you afraid of me?" The old man looks over and says" I've been married to your sister for 27 years, why the hell should I be scared of you."

Nic could probably say that after living with me for another six months.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I’ve enjoyed meeting you immensely. Hopefully, readers will have gotten to know you a little better and will cut you a bit more slack (not that I think you care what they think).

Seriously, who the hell doesn’t like me?

I’d make a list, but I’m afraid that would be akin to writing their death warrant. How about I just promise to send you the Supernatural DVD series instead? You’ll love it.

Demons of Oblivion #4

Now, to what you stopped by for. An interview by yours truly with Ryann.
(Bold & Black - Melissa & Interviewer, Blue - Ryann, Red - Zara)

Recently a vampire was interviewed by our journalist Dina James. I wanted to bring you the view from a different perspective. A special interview with Ryann David. You’ll learn in just a few moments why this woman is so special.

Ah! Here she comes now, finished at work for G J & R Psychic Detective Agency…

*steps in, glances around taking in the exits and potential weapons, and takes a seat facing both Melissa and the door*

Hello, Ryann! It is an honored to have you by to talk with me. A few of your colleagues have been interviewed and I thought we should hear the sensible side of things.

Absolutely, thank you so much for having me.

I’ve heard rumors through the club Alchemy Red that you are a demon hunting/fighting nun. Correct?

Yes, though no longer a nun. *absently clasps cross at her throat* I’ve kept my vows to fight demons if they’re causing problems and endangering human lives, however I...live a little more secular now.

That’s a big change, sounds like there might have been a tough moment in your life.
My faith in the divine has never wavered. My faith in institutions, however...is lacking. I strongly feel I’m on the right path, however.

I’m curious. A place like Alchemy Red has no hard feelings with letting you in?

Provided I don’t attempt to kill any of their clients, they allow me into the club. It’s not somewhere I prefer to go but I usually get...“encouraged” to come along with my friends.

And problems of a supernatural variety quite commonly pop up at a club geared towards a supernatural clientele, so my particular skillset tends to be useful there.

Hmm, I’ll have to keep my eye on Alchemy Red then.

It would help to also have a katana.

You seem to have amazing senses for detecting and fighting demons. Did you go through a lot of extensive training?

Yes, ten years. Both physical and psychological training as well as some strategy.

I personally think the ability to sense demons is a combination of factors. The first and most prominent is that we’re trained to identify predators. Predators have a particular way of moving, of looking at the world. Because we’re taught to hunt the hunters, we’re good at identifying demons and vampires.

The second part, I truly believe comes from divine blessing. We wouldn’t survive if not for the grace of God.

You are currently working with a very special group here. Or a talented man, Ellie. I hear he can…talk to the dead? That’s the Psychic part of the Detective Agency. Is that so?

Yes, he’s a medium. His specific talent is that he can commune with the spirits of those who have died violently as well as see through the eyes of killers.

It seems you worry greatly for Ellie. Is there a lasting effect on Ellie when he performs his work?

*Ryann leans forward, lowers her voice* Honestly, the depth of which it influences him...I don’t know. I do know that he tends to drink when using his gifts or else he risks violent, debilitating seizures. He also maintains a connection with those he speaks to. To what degree, I can’t say, but it’s...difficult. Hard on him.

Now, I’m curious. How did a well adjusted person as yourself, and a demon hunter, become friends with a vampire? Or two! But one in particular, Zara Lain. Oh. Zara Lain...

*Ryann stiffens, looks at the door* Oh...dear. *raises her voice* Do you have some sort of sixth sense about when someone’s talking about you?

*door creaks open, heavy heels thump on the floor* *Zara walks in wearing four-inch heels, skinny jeans, and a corset; she drapes herself on the arm of the couch, tossing back her black hair* It’s my super power of innate narcissism.

*sigh*

Go on. Just pretend I’m not here.

As I was saying, not all vampires are evil. They have the potential to kill, but so do all humans.

I’m a little bit evil.

You are very evil, and if you attempt to kill an innocent, I’ll stop you.

Aww, you’re like a snarly little kitten who thinks she’s badass.

Zara Lain has joined us folks! Zara, you always bring a bit of color and flavor to a room. It’s a pleasure to see you again.

My human BF! Hey, Melissa. Don’t mind me, I’m just going to steal Ry when she’s done. Got a half demon pestering orphans and puppies to take care of.

Are you sure it’s orphans and puppies and not someone who owes you money?

Maybe.

Ry, you were trained at a church. Do you think you will return there one day? After all you’ve seen and learned, could you return to the hunting team you once were on?

If—

*Zara interrupts* Ohhhh that would be so much fun.

This is not your interview.

I’m just saying. You’ve got a training room, right? We could make it Thunderdome. I take on a bunch of Hunters. Impale them on their own stakes. In the shape of a cross. It would wonderfully blasphemous.

*Ryann clears throat* If they needed me, yes, I’d return on a temporary basis. Never permanently, however—not with all I know now.

I dunno, I think they might end up having some answers for you, Buffy.

Please stop calling me—wait, what are you talking about?

*Zara yawns* My trigger finger’s kinda itchy. Let’s beat up some demons.

Thank you for speaking with me, Ry. I don’t want to take up any more of your valuable time.

Thank you very much for having me, Melissa. *Ryann rises*

*Zara hops off the arm of the couch* See ya, Mel!

See ya Zara. Call and we'll do drinks. And there you have it folks. Ryann David….

Favorite Quotes, from 9 Crimes and a bit special addition...

I wanted to include authors of books I've loved.  And what better way of including them then having quotes from the books?  A great way to introduce you to the books and share a bit from them.

Oh, this series is the top of my shelves.  I've loved all the books as I venture through this series, Demons of Oblivion.  I have to admit 9 Crimes is on my list as it eased my bruised heart a bit.  Skyla wrote so much emotion into Exhumed, I wanted this.  NEEDED this.  And reading these lines that Skyla picked...ooooh, I love them so much...

Skyla was gracious enough to add in bits from Exhumed to help explain what 9 Crimes is centered around and why.

Betrayal, Hurt, & Consequences

(Or, Wherein Skyla Turns a Request for 2-4 Lines into a Full-Blown Guest Post on “Behind the Scenes” with Exhumed and 9 Crimes)

9 Crimes is a bit of an odd novella, as it’s supplemental to the main series. It takes place during the fourth Demons of Oblivion novel, Exhumed, from the point of view of another character. It’s hard, then, for me to look 9 Crimes on its own; for me it’s a piece of a puzzle, integral to Exhumed, and every scene, every line is directly influenced by the novel it mirrors.

And so I give you my favourite lines that appear in both pieces:

“You hurt me! And there are consequences to breaking my motherfucking heart.”

Of course, they need a little context. So I’m going to look at the scene they take place in, along with a few words on each point of view.

***

(Now picture an argument/physical fight on a lawn at night; in this moment our heroine, Zara, is on her back, flipped over by our hero, Nate, and who is holding her down as she just had a knife to his throat—LOOK, I am not a romance writer, okay? Love is ugly in my books.)

Exhumed (Zara’s point of view):

“I am a fucking monster and don’t you ever forget it.”

He leaned in, not so much gripping my wrists as putting his weight on them, pushing me into the ground and I wished it would just fucking swallow me whole. His face was six inches from mine, hair near enough to touch my face, and this close, this near, I couldn’t handle it. Couldn’t handle looking at him, thinking about him, feeling anything. Panic clawed up my chest, emotion rising past the walls I had in place, strength draining as moments in this timeless dimension stretched on.

“What do I need to do?” he whispered. “Tell me what I can do to—”

“You can’t. There’s nothing left.”

“I love you.”

I flinched like I’d been slapped. “You hurt me!”

It was the last thing I expected to say—the very last thing I wanted to say—but there it was out on the table, the crux of the matter. The truth. My eyes burned but I didn’t blink because I felt like if I lost the battle and closed them, I’d open them again and be crying—and he’d lost the goddamn right to see me cry. I ground my teeth together, tried to calm my jackhammering pulse.

“And there are consequences,” I continued darkly, “to breaking my motherfucking heart.”

Exhumed, 07/2012
For me, these were among the scariest lines vampire Zara Lain has ever uttered.

Zara is a monster. She has always labeled herself as such from the very first book (Bloodlines). Sure, she’s snarky and funny. And she has damage a lot of people would understand—she was turned as a teenager, betrayed by her husband, lost a baby, etc. A lot of people felt she softened in Bloodlines by the end, calling her merely a wounded woman and suggesting her attitude was a front to keep others at bay.

In Exhumed, that assumption is proven rather patently false.

What happens when a three hundred year old vampire—who has killed for survival, killed for pleasure, and is adept at expressing her feelings through violence—finally lets someone close to her only to find herself betrayed? Zara deals with pain by inflicting it on others, exacting revenge in ways that will utterly annihilate her target on all fronts. And because I know precisely everything she is capable of, her admission that she’d been hurt and the consequences she plainly lays out for her former lover gives me chill every time.

This moment was the culmination of a long, heartbreaking exchange, where two people who loved each other found out there was an extreme, insurmountable disconnection between what they thought they knew and reality. Zara is cut deep and raw, and admitting her pain—admitting she let someone in enough to hurt her like this by declaring “You hurt me!”—is the moment shit gets real.

(Bonus: I had “So Cold” by Ben Cocks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga94wVeFBac on repeat for Zara’s POV scene.)

Now let’s check in with Nate...

***

9 Crimes (Nate’s point of view):

“I am a fucking monster and don’t you ever forget it.”

This couldn’t be it. This couldn’t be her, couldn’t be me. I couldn’t deal with this again—couldn’t stand to be left, again, wondering what the hell happened to the girl I fell in love with. She was hurt, yes, but she couldn’t be serious.

I had to fix it. Had to...fix us, somehow. Had to get her to a place where we could talk and she would actually listen. I learned closer, staring in her eyes, trying to find some semblance of my Zara there—the one who hated my father for hurting me, who came back for me when I was bleeding in Peter’s house, who was so patient while insanity gripped me and I tried to hurt her over and over again. That Zara had to be real.

She still had to be in there somewhere.

“What do I need to do?” I whispered. God, anything, please... “Tell me what I can do to—”

“You can’t,” she said harshly. “There’s nothing left.”

No. “I love you.”

She flinched, tears brimming in her eyes, and she screamed, “You hurt me!” Her voice pitched lower, darker, chilling me through. “And there are consequences to breaking my motherfucking heart.”

And I ached, then, because I knew it was over.

Whatever walls she’d let down for me were back up. Whatever part of her that had softened, had laughed, had loved me was gone. Whatever had been there between us was dead. And it didn’t matter that whatever she’d thought had happened didn’t, didn’t matter that I would do anything for her.

It was over.

Over.

So for Zara, her admission that he’d hurt her was more of a “Duh!” moment. Like you’d have to be a moron to not know what she was capable of—to not know there are consequences to crossing someone with her history and violent tendencies (incidentally, it always reminded me of Kill Bill Vol. 2, where Bill’s all like “Of COURSE I shot you in the face, what the hell did you expect?”).

9 Crimes, 8/2012
For Nate, this is all “OMGWTFBBQ.”

Because he loves her. He thinks he knows her. He thinks beneath everything she’s still human. He can’t comprehend why she won’t talk to him, how she reacted so badly without even speaking to him first, how what was an ugly argument and misunderstanding from his point of view was the tail end of a situation already broken from hers. He doesn’t understand this side of her, or that there’s an entirely different person suddenly staring back from her eyes. He saw the good in her without seeing the bad. Now the bad has risen to the surface, which he must reconcile with his previous view of her. He made the mistake of thinking she was more bite than bark.

He’s angry, but he still wants to fix things—he’s stubborn and has trouble believing it’s possible for anything to be so badly broken that they can’t survive it. The man has a bit of a White Knight Syndrome—he comes from an abusive childhood and domestic violence situation, and he wants to Save Everyone. Especially her—like if he can just love her enough, that’ll somehow fix her damage.

Of course, you can’t fix damaged people. Either they repair themselves or things just eventually implode—and when she screams “You hurt me!” it is the precise moment when he realizes that.

(Bonus: His scene ended up with a lot of Damien Rice, specifically “I Remember” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fqdeR_f9-8.)

***

As a writer, these scenes were extremely challenging and rewarding to write—especially with 9 Crimes, to take the same dialogue, the same scene, and flip protagonist to antagonist. I’d been deep in Zara’s head—her pain, her vulnerabilities—and to switch that perspective to his was just as heartbreaking. Both people have valid points of view, despite seeing their entirely opposite perspectives, and it drove home for me just how subjective “truth” often is. And that there are consequences to breaking the motherfucking heart of a monster.
