This was a quick read for me. I enjoyed reading it each night. It feels like this book brings Darian back to even ground after all she's been through. Her feelings are more pronounced now that she's lost some, a good many, of her memories.

The year with these holes in her memories have been hard as she's tried to work for money for a new place to live and being hunted by others. I love that she is aware of a hollow spot in her heart too. That is an awareness that she had something or someone.

We see battles and friendships with Darian. She sure has different kinds of friendships.... from Camden to Anya and with Raif and Xander. She has more of her own created family than she realized.

The end of this book ties up many loose ends. However we are left with a few other loose ends. I do think with how things are with Darian and Tyler that those loose ends won't be loose for long. lol. But it would be interesting to see how they live on with the new rules. Very carefully, I would think.

Such a fun series to read. Darian had me nervous for her and many things through the series. I'm think she's in a good place here.

Book Review: Shadows at Midnight by Amanda Bonilla

This book kept me reading. Each night, I couldn't wait to read more and even wanted to stay up later to keep going.

We start the book with Darian imprisoned and tortured because of someone she killed, for Xander. This was a tough moment to get through. The torture that she endured. Wow. This would truly be terrible to come back from. But there's one special person in her life that can help with his magic and their bond.

When Xander trades himself for Darian's freedom and his part in the killing, Darian can't take it. She pulls a team together and goes to get him. Along the way, Darian starts to see more of Tyler's power and what he can do. He could be frightful if she didn't know him so well.

Darian doesn't get much down time after the terrible labyrinth of traps and illusions. Xander needs help returning to the real world after his torture. And the Synod is present...

Darian has been one who's not had any friends or anyone close enough to be like family in centuries. She's now grown close to those around her. She's always there to help them any way she can. Darian and Tyler's bond grows stronger and they are closer and closer. But there's pieces that Tyler's still not ready to share just yet, which Darian fears could mean danger for her or them.

I liked seeing Tyler in action more here. And we do finally get to learn pieces about Tyler and the jinn. I loved Tyler but I wasn't sure he was always thinking to protect Darian in the first books. He seemed bossy and territorial. But now, he's more on the protective and loving side. I feel their relationship has grown into more and they are great together. (And I'm glad Darian has made a decision on which man's for her.)

The ending of this book.... it'll leave you wanting the next! So so glad I have it here because I have to know how things will go next.

This book had me reaching for it each night (my reading time). I even stayed up later or went to bed sooner at times to read.

Darian has returned from her stay in O Anel. It was two weeks away for her, but six months for everyone at home. Darian's still healing and adjusting after what happened. She has many friends who help in their own ways. Darian wants to work, and gets a job from Tyler.

And, her past has resurfaced. Lorik has returned to town and has his sights set on high goals. Goals he wants Darian to help him achieve. And after getting her job from Tyler, Lorik's goals may lead her to her job focus.

Truthfully, I didn't trust Lorik from the beginning. He is not one to trust to have your back. He just wants what he wants. And there's something more here too.

Oh Darian. She's stuck in the love triangle that shouldn't be so hard. She loves, wants, and needs Tyler. Xander... he just doesn't know the word no. So, with his position as King in turmoil in his kingdom, he has Tyler arrested for hitting him in public in the previous book. Xander is determined that he can protect Darian. That he can give her what she needs. And yet, in the end....

Darian is struggling emotionally. She's got a lot that's happened and getting past all of it, well, that may not be 100% for a very, very long time. If ever. She has friends that help her. But there's others that think they know best for her. Ugh. If I was her, I may give up on trusting anyone ever again. But Darian is open to her friends and appreciates them. She even gives others opportunities that come back.

With the way this book ended, I'm definitely on to the next book. I need to know what happens!

Oh Darian... She's so strong willed. It's great to see, but sometimes that can be broken too. And when that happens, it's not always in a good way.

Things are on the outs with Tyler. And things heat up with Xander. And Darian doesn't know how she feels. She is lost to the absence of Tyler for so long. And when she does see him with.... Oh that is something that's hard for her to see. Raif and Xander are determined to get her out of her home and back into action. What they don't realize is the broken heart can sometimes cloud judgement or decisions...

Darian's given the job to protect Anya and her unborn child. Anya wants her husband protected. And Anya knows more than she's sharing, which could be dangerous for all.

Darian's also given a job by messenger. This job is a complicated one but she's determined to take care of it.

Darian is taking a lot of things personally in the state of mind she's been in. She's failing at a lot of things and making mistakes. It's hard to pull out of that hole when there. So she's determined to solve it all on her own.

Such an emotional ride here with Darian. But I love that Darian still has her quick clips that come out. She's always great for fun remarks.

How this book ends... I had to dive into the next book.

I do want to share that there could be a trigger warning with this book. One character is a Succubus. And he can take advantage of the unwilling. I will give Amanda credit. She took on a tough and emotional subject here and it works. A terrible moment.

Book Review: Blood Before Sunrise by Amanda Bonilla

I was glad to get back into this world. Though things aren't as Darian thinks they are. Things are off.

Never would Darian have thought they'd play out the way they did. She's determined to help the man that's like a brother to her find his daughter. And keep things well along with make sure Tyler stays safe while she does it.

Darian has troubles with trust. Who wouldn't blame her after how Azriel had treated her all those years ago. I know it's hard to break how you've grown to be, but I so wish Darian would share and tell Tyler more. Things would have been so much easier for her. (but, then we wouldn't have had a book, right? lol)

Darian is one that when she gets ahold of something, she doesn't let go until she gets through to the end. And that she does here.

We learn about new levels of magic here. Very interesting.

I found the beginning of the book slower as things build up. Then off we go with Darian. Almost like a bull in a China shop. lol. The end, I wasn't sure if it would end. It was a lot happening, but then when the big finally happened I felt it wasn't as big as we had been leading up to.

I did enjoy all we learned though. And I'll be following along with Darian in the next books.

Recommendation:  Oh yes. Lovely little read in the world of Sentry of Evil. Little bit of love and a haunting.

Alec Bailey knows a thing or two about the supernatural world and its dangers. When the local news crew shows up to do a piece on his hotel, he knows he should send them away…especially with that unchecked demon lurking on the property perimeter. Supernatural protocol dictates he call in Jacquelyn, McCall’s own demon hunter, but he isn’t ready to say goodbye to the beautiful crew member who reminds of a time in his life long past…

If Alec can’t keep Alyssa from the forest, she’s as good as dead. When she ventures past the iron fence, Alec realizes that he’ll have to defy supernatural law if he’s going to save her. And it may be that defiance, this time, will save him right back…

**I read this story for my own enjoyment.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Alyssa is a production assistant in a crew filming a supposed haunted hotel as a highlight story for Halloween. Alyssa feels the need to leave her room and go for a walk late at night as her boss and the anchor-woman are busy rattling the walls. Before she gets to the woods Alec stops her. There is something dangerous out in the woods that will kill. There is a familiarity between the two as well, but neither knows the other feels it.

To me this is a blend of spooky-sweet. What's out there in the woods, nasty. Not good out there. But Alec and Alyssa, sweet. Kind of a Val-oween?

This novella takes place not long after the first book, Vengeance Borne, of furies attacks. Jacquelyn has her hands full with the after affects but she shows up briefly here. We see Jacquelyn briefly here as she is hunting what is in the woods.

The news crew don't seem to find the ghosts they are looking for, but what's out in the woods is much more dangerous. Alec does his best to protect the guests by boarding up all the exits except the front door, to keep them from the woods. It almost works.

Alec and Alyssa both have a common feeling of familiarity and attraction for each other, neither know the other feels this way. As if they'd meet before. This is something that I wish was explored a little more, but was so sweet in this novella. We get the view from Alyssa and Alec to get the full feel of the thoughts and attraction. I hope we get a chance to see these two again in the novels at some point, I'd like to know them a bit better.

I will say I had my suspicions of Alec, you read you'll understand. I was kept in suspense of him and his being and rules for the story. I had to know more about him. In the end, I got them.

Do you need to read Vengeance Borne to read this? No, I don't think so. These two characters are not in Vengeance Borne. But you won't know the town and what Jacquelyn's job is. You'll deduce it from this story. There are no major spoilers of the first book here though, or so I thought.

After reading this, I wanted to watch High Spirits again. Do you know that movie? A movie from 1988 with ghosts and a castle. Was cute and fun. I think if you enjoyed the movie, you'll enjoy the quick story.

There are so many different Mythology and Mythological Beings recorded. Some are very popular and well known, others not so much. There are many similar beings, yet different depending on the culture it’s based in.  The definition of Myth covers about anything in the Urban Fantasy/Fantasy realm to me.

The Mythology of the Shaede Assassin World

Thanks so much to Melissa and My World in Words and Pages for having me as a guest for Mythical Monday! When I started writing SHAEDES OF GRAY I realized that in order to fully understand the world I was building I’d need a history, an origin of the Shaede and Lyhtan races. As opposite sides of the same coin, I couldn’t justify their animosity against each other until I knew where they came from, what their history was, and what spurred their feud to begin with. Though Lyhtans don’t have much time on the page, I had to know their origins. I found the word in some on-line ancient words dictionary. Lyhtan—a verb—literally means, “to make light.” What better word to name my creatures that were so different from my shadow-loving Shaedes. And since I couldn’t find a creature in mythology that fit my vision of the Lyhtan, I made them up from scratch.

Though Shaedes and Lyhtans are technically fae creatures, I decided to make them uncommon among the fae. They are a unique species in that they are a product not only of their biology, but of magic. As the legend goes, Kreighton, high king of the Dark Fae forbade his sons from leaving the borders of his kingdom. But as young men are prone both to curiosity and disobeying their fathers, they set out to see the world beyond their kingdom. Artis, eldest son and favored by his father, fell in love with a beautiful Sylph princess, while Rannan, the more rebellious of the two, took a powerful Sidhe sorceress as his bride. When Kreighton learned of his sons’ betrayal, he flew into a rage. Using up every ounce of his magic, he marked their offspring as something other and unnatural, so that the fae would know they were creatures never meant to be. However, since the king had favored Artis before his rebellion, Kreighton took pity on him and rather than exact the harsh punishment he’d planned, he gifted Artis’s children with fae beauty and cloaked them with the protection of the shadows at night.

But Rannan’s children felt the brunt of Kreighton’s curse. They are the Lyhtans. Banished to the light to hide their grotesque forms in the light of day and forced to remain corporeal at night. Unlike Shaedes, Lyhtans are able to assume the form of a glittering beetle-like insect during the daylight hours, a small concession given by Kreighton so that Rannan’s children would know some measure of beauty. Whereas Shaedes can blend with humans, Lyhtans look more like praying mantises. They hunt like animals, feed upon their prey by injecting them with a venom that liquefies their victim’s insides for easy consumption, and they live solitary lives often in caves of high up in trees where they can remain unnoticed.

Since the Lyhtans obviously got the crappy end of the deal, their hatred and animosity toward Shaedes was easily justified. The creation myth allowed for a built-in feud. An attack on site policy that would need no other justification other than a centuries-old grudge. By interweaving their heritage, I could incorporate Lyhtans easily into the Shaede world. It also gave me the opportunity to create balance. I also wanted to offer readers an atypical representation of light and dark which is usually associated with good and evil, ugliness and beauty. In the Shaede Assassin world, the good guys don’t always wear white, don’t always have sunshine on their shoulder.

Difficult Heroines and Remembering My Twenties

Thanks so much to Melissa for having me as a guest today!

I have a tendency to write difficult heroines. Sometimes selfish, silly, and stubborn, their attitudes and hard heads often get in the way and cause their roads to be rocky, their journeys tumultuous. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about it and I realized that I tend to write heroines who are also in their twenties. I said to my friend, do think most people remember how they behaved in their twenties?

I remember thinking that I was such an adult. That I had life totally figured out. Things like mortality, the future, stability, didn’t matter quite as much because I had all the time in the world. I still felt invincible. And I made so, so many stupid mistakes. Decisions that I look back on and wonder, What in the hell was I thinking?

A few months back I read an article that stated that the brain isn’t fully developed until after our twenties. That could account for the bad decision making skills. And let’s face it: most twenty year olds would absolutely run head-first into a bad situation because they’re still suffering from that arrogance that comes with youth. Nothing can hurt me! I’m bulletproof!

But our twenties are also the years where we “find ourselves.” It’s through those bad choices and irrationality that we discover who we are, what’s important to us, and how we want to live our lives. Which makes writing a believable character arc with tons of growth really easy for me. Through the course of these bad decisions, the selfishness, the utter irresponsibility, we all grow. My fictional heroines grow as well. They begin to learn that life isn’t quite what they thought it was, that they weren’t quiet the adults they perceived themselves as, and ultimately they grow into more mature, rational, adult characters.

What were/are your twenties like? Were you a silly, irresponsible, bad decision making youth, or maybe a level-headed, mature adult?

My Thoughts and Summary:
McCall seems to be thriving in paranormal activity lately, dampening her sleep time and calling Jacquelyn away from her night out with friends with a Banshee warning call.  Off to secret job to hunt demons before the Banshee find the victim to claim.  Jax tries to avoid hunting with her Bearer, and ex-boyfriend, Finn.  Micah drives through town in his RV looking to stay away from people with his curse of feeling emotions and having terror visions of people getting hurt.  But Micah is stalled in his passing as he sees the woman from his latest dream, the one who escaped the death he saw coming.  Jax finds Micah, a rather strong unknown Bearer, and train him to help her with the murders that Finn is not picking anything supernatural on, but Micah is.  The murders could get her pulled from this town she's come to love by the Sentry and even worse, bring death to those she loves dearly.  The Banshee's not singing for the deaths, and that scares Jax.  Finn's not seeing anything supernatural about them.  Micah is fresh to the field and seems to be accepting the gift he was running from, but will Jax have him trained in time to save those of the town from Furies?  And herself?

The first chapter was a hit!  Brought me right in to the world Jacquelyn is in along with the action too.

Lots of this world blended with meeting everyone and the ways of Jacquelyn.  Loved the creation of the world Jacquelyn is in, and the potential to come.  I do want more of it.
   The Sentry - Super secret supernatural business
   The Bearer - Tracker and Magic gauge, and all they can do for their Waerd with emotional and physical bruises
   The Waerd - An appointed protector of ghouls, demons, and their ilk - the hunter of them all when they attack

I get a feel that the world of The Sentry with the Bearers and Waerds is so much more.  There is a heavier story behind all of the creation here, and I want it!  I am taken with this creation and look forward to reading more and more as Jacquelyn, Micah, and Finn learn about it as well.

The characters are catching, along with their abilities and connection to each other and the world created.  Micah has no idea what he is and what he is wandering into.  But here in McCall, he starts to feel connected to his "gift" or curse as he calls it.  He starts to feel better, and it's all thanks to Jacquelyn.  It seems the Waerd and Bearer work together to keep each other grounded, in more ways than one.  Jacquelyn has issues in her past she needs to work through, and Micah seems to be the one to help her through those.  Finn is still in love with Jax and is struggling to get through their breakup.

We get a few different POVs here.  Jacquelyn, Micah, and the man who has "the vengeance's" to his use (or is it the other way around, he to the vengeance's use?).  This gives us the view from all angles.  The hunter, the bearer, and the furies in attach.  With Jacquelyn not having her queues there are attacks, the POV of the vengeance user is very important, and also adds suspect to your reading.

The fury view is so well done it makes me wonder who it is.  I had one suspect from the beginning, then all the sudden I was up to two (possibly three) suspects!  I had to keep reading to see who it was!

Only one little piece that stuck out to me.  One sentence.  Jacquelyn is a smart girl, but there is mention that she gets a vibe from someone and wishes Micah or Finn was with her to look at him.  Then she seems to forget this thought.  I know her emotions are numbed, which is some explanation along with all going on with the hunk of men (Micah and Finn) around her.  She's slightly off her game, and this is the example to show it.  She's on the hunt for Furies and knowing she needs to pay close attention, and she knows this.  Knowing the Furies could be attached to anyone, even if she thinks this person may not be likely.  Other than this one little mention, I truly enjoyed this book!

I love the mystery and unknown behind Waerds and Bearers, completely different.  And the connection between the two.  What the Bearer can do for Waerds, explains Jacquelyn's emotions so perfectly, especially when in hunter mode.

An Urban Fantasy read with a rich world.  I want to know more and look forward to future books!

Trish just returned to the kitchen, where Micah has just bought us time with the Sentry, after checking in on Jacquelyn.  Things seem...not so good.  But I have faith in Jacquelyn like Micah and Trish. She'll find those furies and eliminate them. After what happened with Finn, yep.  She will!
