Mythical Monday (22)

It seems there are many books based on or influenced by Myths and Mythological Beings.

There are so many different Mythology and Mythological Beings recorded. Some are very popular and well known, others not so much. There are many similar beings, yet different depending on the culture it’s based in.  The definition of Myth covers about anything in the Urban Fantasy/Fantasy realm to me.

I’ve invited authors to share briefly the Mythological being or Myth that influenced their character(s) or story, or what their character(s) are based on influencing their books.  Hosting here, one author and being or myth per week.

This week we have:
Fantasy and Paranormal author Frances Pauli
Talking of Kelpies.

The Kelpies Are On The Loose…

What is it about a sleek, black horse that makes girls go swoony? I was no different, and as a young reader I spent my time devouring the Black Stallion series, Black Beauty, anything I could find with a big, black horse in it. Eventually, I worked my way out of horse books and into science fiction and fantasy. I grew up a little. I got a real horse and learned firsthand about shoveling, and colic, and waiting in the snow for a veterinarian to show up.

I still gravitated toward an obsession with Friesians, but I couldn’t afford one as a teenage girl and my parents weren’t budging. So, in my reading endeavors, at least, I migrated toward dragons, griffons, and giant eagles.

Okay, maybe not that last one.

Still, the focus was on mythical beasties, and in a book by my all-time favorite author, Andre Norton, I discovered a kelpie. The idea of a killer horse, in particular a black one, lured me in pretty easily. Everything about the kelpie is seductive, and their mythos worked beautifully for my purposes when it came time to choose Unseelie races to feature in the Changeling Race series.

Kelpies are stunningly gorgeous black horses that seem friendly and domesticated in order to lure unsuspecting humans into a ride to their death. They are often associated with water, and sometimes lurk around the edges of ponds or lakes, hiding in the reeds to wait for their victims. When successful at getting a wayward human to climb aboard, the kelpie usually races for the nearest body of water to drown and devour them.

Pretty wicked, big black horse critter.

They are sometimes portrayed as half horse and half man. Now, that is something I couldn’t just ignore. The half-and-half kelpie looks like a struggling, drowning animal until you rush in to help it. Commence with the drowning and devouring again.

The equine resemblance falters in their jagged teeth and grabby hands. Kelpies often have long, stringy manes that obscure their inhuman nature, another thing that brought Friesians to my mind and made them absolutely irresistible to me. I imagined shaggy forelocks, muscles and lots of nasty teeth.

So, I let the kelpies loose. The series is urban fantasy, and shy on lake scenes. Not a pond to be had, in fact, but I had this idea of a horse loose in the city. Horses and streets are a recurring nightmare for me. No pun intended. It springs from the fact that my pony was an escape artist who often spent her evenings wandering the neighborhood looking for free snacks. I suppose setting an evil, flesh-hungry equine free on the city streets was somewhat therapeutic in that sense. He’s loose, and he’s hungry…very much like my pony.

I like to think she never caused quite as much trouble. Then again, she did have her evil moments.

Her hand reached out. Her fingers curled toward the temptation of horse flesh.
The beast’s nose stretched closer, and she caught the gleam of an arched neck, the cascade of tangled, black mane. Her hand brushed satin. One of the hooves stamped, loud and hollow against the night. The lips tensed and pulled back from a row of jagged teeth.

About Frances Pauli:
Despite a tragic predilection to paint, Frances finally discovered her calling as a writer sometime in her mid thirties. She set aside her degree in visual art, packed up the easel and opened her laptop.

As a lifetime reader of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the stories that clammer for her attention inevitably fall into the Speculative Fiction category. Her tales might feature aliens, fairies or an oddball assortment of humans, but usually contain at least a trace of humor and often a dash of romance. She currently resides in Washington State with her husband, two small children, and a host of unusual and exotic pets. When not wrangling toddlers, or writing like mad, she can be heard bemoaning her lack of free time to spend: rock hounding, belly dancing, painting(yes, still) or enjoying quiet time with her family. Frances eats far too much chocolate, drinks far too little wine and does her best to get the stories out and on paper before they drive her completely insane.

Book Review: Spiders from Memory

Spiders from Memory

By:  Frances Pauli

Publisher:  Mundania Press

Publish Date:  January 2012

Format:  Paperback, 211pgs, 5" X 8"

Genre:  Fantasy

Series:  3rd & final book of The Changeling Trilogy; 1st Book ~ A Moth in Darkness, Book 2 ~ The Fly in Paradise

Recommendation:  If you enjoy fey and the Seelie/Unseelie world.  Yes, most definitely!

Book Synopsis:
The Seelie court is gone, and the Tower has fallen into darker hands.  Now nightmare creatures terrorize the Fey races, and the whole Fey world turns to frost and shadow.

Liz Larson holds the last remnant of the Seelie Sidhe's power.  The elves look to her for guidance, but all she has to offer them is the disturbing story of their origin, the final truth that will turn many of them against her.  With her dwindling number of allies, Liz needs to reopen the borders, to find the missing Marcus Bramble, and to avoid the sudden, terrifying attention of the new Fey ruler, the Unseelie Speaker and new master of the Sidhe Tower.

While her friends in Mundanity race to pry open the gates, and Marcus searches for the answer to a puzzle that could save or damn them all, the Unseelie Speaker marches north, bringing his army and his wrath to focus on Elizabeth.  What can one, fairy-touched human do in the face of the Unseelie court's full fury?  How can she fight when the enemy's anger is only partly blind, when she can see all too clearly the traces of justice behind it?

First Sentence:
Hoof beats rang like gunfire down the alley.

My Thoughts and Summary:
We meet one of the dark horse fey, on the cover, first.  A Kelpie, and on a deadly killing spree in the human world.  Liz, Lockland, Laurel, and others in the fey world still alive, are at the place where Lockland was held captive in the first book with a cold frosty winter coating the land, non-stop, since the Unseelie took over.  Liz has become leader of the fey, the last everyone knows of with a touch of Sidhe, and some are not to happy with it.  The Dark Fey are attacking any fey and refugees in the southern woods, gaining ground and power.  Marcus is with the glowing fey egg in the secreted room with no entrance or exit and is shocked when the egg becomes much more than he thought.

The fey and those touched by fey on mundane side of the closed gates are in just as much disarray as the fey world.  Jess and Mary have fey and dancers camping on their lawn and staying with them.  Human dancers are now committing suicide, with quitting cold turkey from the fey offerings.  Bev, one of the few embassy employees still working, is babysitting the grown gripping fey stuck in the human realm.  But a case is given to her by her boss, one the police can't handle; a string of murders with hoof prints leading away.  It now becomes a question as to if the gates can be opened, by one of the three who originally opened it, for the fey stuck here.  On the fey side, they are seeing a new deadly ruler take over the land and need help to fight him, but what Liz has to tell the Elves of their long history will change their thinking, way of life, and world forever.

Sounds like a lot going on, huh?  But really it's not that confusing.  Honest!  I'm one to easily get lost, and in NO WAY did I here.  Frances does a wonderful job of keeping the POVs separated for us, and all are going on in a same time frame, so no time jumping.  Actually, really liked having the different POV in this series.  Especially this book, with the gates closed.  I got to see both sides of the gates, how each come to the pieces of the puzzle they hold.

I couldn't wait to finish this trilogy.  I had to see what happens with the characters and in the worlds.  I needed to know for sure what was suspected in The Fly in Paradise.  I was happy with this ending, and I got all my answers here!  The author even ties up the series here for us, as well as a fey story can be tied up. ;)

This series is wonderful for Seelie/Unseelie fey lovers.  There is a wonderful twist to the thinking and I enjoyed it the whole way through the series.  And we have characters growing to be so much more then where they started.  Well done through out a three book series.

This book is another that keeps moving forward, and very little down time explaining.  There is always something coming and all works together to bring us to the conclusion.  We get an ending with bullets and arrows, but we also get something more and soothing too.  Oh and the little faeries!  I have to mention them as they play a very important role in this book.  Those pesky little things.  hee hee.

Very much enjoyed, and I look forward to reading more of Frances Pauli's books.

Who? What? Where? (57)

Who are you with? Where are you at? What's happening?

Share with us just a little bit of what is happening in the book you are reading, right where you are now.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.

(This is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )

I'm with Marcus in the secluded cave with no entrances or exits.  The egg just changed!  Holy Cow!  And now we wait.  But from the section just before this one, I fear for Marcus and the new presence's safety.  The Unseelie leader is not a nice one, as you can probably guess.

This Week:

They stood there, Marcus watching the city on fire and Seelie refusing to look, until he felt her shiver and noted the goose bumps along his own arms.  They needed to make camp, and now the light would play against them.

Book Review: The Fly in Paradise

The Fly in Paradise

By:  Francis Pauli

Publisher:  Mundania Press

Publish Date:  August 2011

Format:  Paperback 213pgs

Genre:  Fantasy

Series:  2nd book in Changeling Race; 1st Book ~ A Moth in Darkness

Recommendation:  Oh yes.  LOVED the twist on the fey history here, and the mystery intertwined to bring you to understand the history.

Book Synopsis:
Something's rotten in the Fey lands.  While Marcus Bramble tracks the lunatic who started it all, Elizabeth and the crew at the Embassy sort through the evidence he left behind.  With Lockland back, and the revels behind her, Liz's world is slowly returning to normal.  But on both sides of the borders, shadow creatures spring out of nowhere, and the dark legends surrounding the fey take on a whole new meaning.

Now time is against them.  On the mortal side of things, protesters rally to close the borders, politicians descend on the Embassy, and something that shouldn't exist stalks Elizabeth through the city.  In his world, Marcus faces a madman with answers he doesn't want to hear.  The Fey rulers turn a blind eye on forests teeming with imaginary monsters, and the Sidhe tower stands silent amidst the chaos.  Will the race to uncover its secrets solve the mystery of the elves' past or unleash even more horrors on them all?

First Sentence:
Blackness swelled and hovered around the woman.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Everyone is at a loss as to how Brendan got out without anyone knowing or seeing him, at end of A Moth in Darkness.  In his investigation, Marcus, decides to go to a revel to relax, but they are different now, he learns just how different and maybe a lead.  As suspected Brendan is back and up to no good.  Marcus has been trailing Brendan with no luck to finding him.  Liz and Lockland are both recovering; Liz resisting to dance with the fey and Lockland from his wounds.  Bev is working on a case dealing with the fairy "drinks" from the revels, when she stumbles upon a crime scene.  A murder, gruesome murder, with child size foot prints with claws walking away, not human at all.  This synthesized fairy offering could be connected to brutal deaths of whole villages, and Liz and Lockland are back to work full swing.  Nightmare creatures, things of human myth come to life in both fey and human worlds and all get worried about the gate between the two worlds ~ could they close them?

Oh dang! I WANT The third book now!! Wonderful story, and one heck of a way to turn the world upside down and inside out.

I'm struggling with what to share with you as I don't want to give anything away.  This book is the book that changes the whole fey world from what was established in the first book.  Gaa.  Very good!  Very well done!  I will admit, I read the synopsis for the third (and final) book of the series.  When I read it there was mention of Seelie court.  I just thought, "Oh they are comparing to the 'Seelie' court idea."  After reading the first book, I wasn't sure how the Seelie idea would play into this series.  Well, Wow!  Let me tell you, by the end of this book I knew EXACTLY how it played into the book, and series.  I loved this twist to the Seelie idea, and the way we came to it.  Wonderfully done.

We do get different views, separated so it isn't confusing for us.  The views are from: Liz, Lockland, Marcus, Bev, Jess (one of Liz's close friends and one of three to open First Gate), then also a few views from the Sidhe.  The Sidhe views are few, but really nice to read as it gives us more inner views that make us curious and flipping the pages.  I really like how we get all pieces of the puzzle as each character is working on a different agenda, that all works back to the one thing we are all looking to get too.

I soooooo can't wait to get my hands on the third and final book of this trilogy, Spider's from Memory.

I received this book from the publisher for review, after enjoying A Moth in Darkness so much.

I'm standing, or ducking, with Jessica, Ol' Mary, Bev, and Kevin in the home of someone they suspect.  That person just pulled a gun, (they're a little on the crazy side at the moment...er) and we just heard the shot, but I don't know if anyone got hit!  I want to know!

Book Release: Spiders from Memory

This one slipped past me!  How is that possible?  Really!?!  But it's now available, and it's the third and final book to the Changeling Race series...maybe?  lol.  If you are wondering Frances Pauli has posted about that very question on Mundania Press.  But at this point the book does wrap up the books.

But on to the book that's now available!

Book Description:

The Seelie court is gone, and the Tower has fallen into darker hands. Now nightmare creatures terrorize the Fey races, and the whole Fey world turns to frost and shadow.

Looking Forward Too...(59)

There are so many amazing books already on the shelves and new ones coming out.

For a list of books yet to be released I'm looking to get, you can also look on my right Sidebar at the ever growing list titled Desired Reads - just scroll down. Of course there are tones of other new books to come out that are amazing as well, but these ones are part of series I have already started or for one reason or another caught my eye (and haven't seen much on other blogs yet). But I will highlight one here each week.

(mentioned in order of Release Date then Alphabetical if there are more than one book coming out on the same date.)

Next Book Is...

Fly in Paradise
The Changeling Race#2
By:  Frances Pauli
Due Out:  August 9, 2011

This is the second book in a faery series I started not to long ago.  I had enjoyed the characters and the world created here; the magical door way that can be created to usher both humans and faery kind back and forth between the two worlds.  And the mystery of the whole first story.  There is more to come in the mystery we started in A Moth of Darkness.

If you would like to check out the review of the first book you can here:
