Book Review: The Rose and the Thorn

The Rose and The Thorn

By:  Michael J. Sullivan

Publisher:  Orbit Books

Publish Date:  September 5, 2013

Format:  eARC

Series:  2nd in Riyria Chronicles;  Book 1 ~ The Crown Tower, Short Story ~ The Viscount and the Witch;

associated with Riyria Revelations - Book 1 ~ The Crown Conspiracy, Book 2 ~ Avempartha, (Book 1 & 2 through Orbit books ~ Theft of Swords) Book 3 ~ Nyphron Rising, Book 4 ~ The Emerald Storm, (Book 3 & 4 through Orbit books ~ Rise of Empire) Book 5 ~ Wintertide, Book 6 ~ Percepliquis (Book 5 & 6 through Orbit books ~ Heir of Nevron)

Recommendation:  OH YES!! Whether you read the starting series or not, this is a great story to learn some scary pasts and see Royce and Hadrian work their magic as a team.

Book Synopsis:
A DEAR FRIEND IS BRUTALLY BEATEN.  TWO THIEVES WANT ANSWERS.  RIYRIA IS BORN.

One year earlier, two thieves were saved from certain death by the compassion of a stranger.  Unable to forget the woman who saved their lives, Royce and Hadrian now return to Gwen DeLancy and are shocked when she refuses to speak to them.  Baffled, the two thieves discover Gwen has been brutally beaten by a powerful noble -- beated so badly she can't face them.  But Gwen doesn't know about Royce's past, doesn't understand how much he cares for her, and doesn't realize what he is capable of -- but she's about to find out.

The Rose and the Thorn is the second book in a new series, The Riyria Chronicles, based on characters from The Riyria Revelations.  Unlike the previous series, which was a carefully choreographed interconnected series of books, the Chronicles are designed to be stand-alone series that can be read independent of each other or the prior novels.

First Sentence:
Reuben should have run the moment the squires came out of the castle keep.

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles  /  Book Depository

**I offered to beta read the book for the author with the love I feel for this world.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Reuben Hilfred, a stable boy whom the Squires look down upon as he's of no money and his father never married his mother, is coming of age to enter the castle soldiers.  He admires the young princess from a far never thinking he'll get close to her, until the day he is told to ride with her on her outing our of the castle grounds.  Not knowing how to use a sword, he still puts his life on the line to save the princess.  Reuben makes some strong friends in this act, and one who he wants to see him as more ends up blaming him in the end for not doing more when she wanted.  The Autumn Gala is approaching and is Reuben's first on-duty day, to celebrate in honor of the new chancellor too.

Royce and Hadrian return to see Gwen, who saved their lives and they can't forget, for the first time since death was knocking at their doors.  To learn there is more going on than expected when Gwen had the girls turn them away.  There is a man out looking for one of Gwen's girls who has not returned home, and his actions have stirred Royce and Hadrian to action.  Royce's past comes to knowledge here as he does what he feels needs done to the men who have harmed Gwen, and a warning to any who might.

We meet and see the big play in Melford history Reuben Hilfred has.  His back story is very important to our characters.  I knew he was important, but *whistle* this important?  I never would have thought. Wow.

We see Royce and Hadrian. Royce... wow!  We see a darker side of Royce here, which I love seeing.  But Royce also learns, do to results of his actions, that there is more than acting and killing.  To think and use words to get action as well.  Hadrian learns others aren't always "good" and innocent as he likes to give everyone credit for before really knowing them.

There is a thread between all the characters and I like seeing the connection to Gwen's place; through Rose.

Royce and Hadrian pick up a new associate along the way of returning to Medford.  Have you read the short story The Viscount and the Witch?  There is a chapter in this story that is that short story.  So you will recognize it immediately.  And it's great to see where that short story leads too.

I loved seeing the Pickering's again.  The father and the boys.  Goodness do I love their spirit and fun.  They are really kind people.  It's great to see Alric and Arista young and carefree before their mother's and father's death.  Simply Royal children.

If you've not read any books with these characters by Michael, do so.  You can start anywhere and grow with them in their world.  For those who have read Riyria Revelations, there are still surprises we didn't know of before.  Read them!  This story can be read before or after the Riyria Revelations.  If after, you will see all the ground work laid of the happenings in the series.  You could read this one before or after The Crown Tower as well.  There are hints to happenings in The Crown Tower, but not spoiled beyond what you already know is to happen.  This story is strictly focused on this books happenings and does come to a close.

Seeing the back story unfold leaves me wondering if Michael's had these written for years before the Riyria Revelations.  The back story fits PERFECTLY with the series.  Good grief the happenings, they bring me right back to the world and the feelings I had in the Riyria Revelations, even more worries as I know what will happen in the series.  But...* speechless*  Wow.  To see the threads unfold here and what leads to what's to come.  Amazing talent from Michael.

Love seeing the preparations for what's to come, filling in the back story of the characters, and the growth of what we love in this world.  Well, WELL worth reading, before or after the Riyria Revelations.

Book Review: The Crown Tower

The Crown Tower

By:  Michael J. Sullivan

Publisher:  Orbit Books

Publish Date:  August 2013

Format:  eARC

Series:  1st in Riyria Chronicles; short story ~ The Viscount and the Witch; associated with Riyria Revelations - Book 1 ~ The Crown Conspiracy, Book 2 ~ Avempartha, (Book 1 & 2 through Orbit books ~ Theft of Swords) Book 3 ~ Nyphron Rising, Book 4 ~ The Emerald Storm, (Book 3 & 4 through Orbit books ~ Rise of Empire) Book 5 ~ Wintertide, Book 6 ~ Percepliquis (Book 5 & 6 through Orbit books ~ Heir of Nevron)

Recommendation:  OH YES!! Whether you read the starting series or not, this is a great story to learn how the characters all met.

Book Synopsis:
TWO MEN WHO HATE EACH OTHER.  ONE IMPOSSIBLE MISSION.  A LEGEND IN THE MAKING.

A warrior with nothing to fight for is paired with a thieving assassin with nothing to lose.  Together they must steal a treasure that no one can reach.  The Crown Tower is the impregnable remains of the grandest fortress ever built and home to the realm's most valuable possessions.  But it isn't gold or jewels the old wizard is after, and this prize can only be obtained by the combined talents of two remarkable men.  Now if Arcadias can just keep Hadrian and Royce from killing each other, they just might succeed.

The Crown Tower is the first book in a new series, The Riyria Chronicles, based on characters from The Riyria Revelations.  Unlike the previous series, which was a carefully choreographed interconnected series of books, the Chronicles are designed to be stand-alone stories that can be read independent of each other or the prior novels.

First Sentence:
Hadrian Blackwater hadn't gone more than five steps off the ship before he was robbed.

Purchase At:
Amazon - Print & Ebook  /  Barnes & Nobles  /  Book Depository

*I beta read this book, as I offered to read for author because I love this world so highly.  Then for honest review from publisher.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Hadrian returns to Vernes from Calis to visit Arcadias in Sheridan at the university, an old friend of his fathers and family.  Hadrian travels by barge up the river with jewel merchants who claim the strange dark caped man is the killer Vernes is looking for.  Hadrian believes in all people, but when people start disappearing and dying Hadrian wonders of this man.

Gwen is a young prostitute who wants out from under the employment of her boss, and the men he lets in his establishment.  When another girl is killed and he threatens Gwen, she decides it's time to make her move.  But she can't leave Medford.  She's waiting for something, someone.

Royce is quiet, sneaky, quick, and deadly thief.  He has an evil in his eyes.  He trusts no one but himself.

Arcadias puts the fighter and the thief together, thinking they would be a good team.  They might be good for each other, IF they can accomplish the job as a team, not separate, and live through it.

Gwen younger before she's on her own.  Her life in Medford as a Calian, the prejudiced is so strong.  How Gwen has come to her own, a hard story.  Gwen's tale of coming to Medford and learning her talent.

We follow Hadrian and Gwen more than Royce.  But Royce is the one we always have a mysterious feel of, and he's not much of a talker.  It takes a bit to get our favorite duo together and the banter flowing, but when they do, the blooming of their quick wits are there.

Oh, for those who have read the first six (or three Orbit) books, we know the secrets and get to see the forming of them.  Those who haven't read the books will have so many clues to what's to come.  You will WANT to know more about these characters.  I love seeing the clues now and Michael has dropped more in to connect later in the series as well.

We learn more of Calis being Hadrian fresh off ship from there.  Even touches from Gwen as her mother was from there.

Through the over all story plot there are mini-plots, which Michael is amazing at.  I really enjoyed these as they are used to tell the story of our characters growth, personalities, world drawing, and to bring the characters together.  There's the murderer mystery going on with Hadrian on the barge.  Gwen fighting for her own life and those of the girls around her, then coming into her own.  Also, Hadrian and Royce meeting and training and trying to compromise to do the job Arcadias requests.  There is even troubles at the university that stir.

The secrets in Gwen's character!  Oh my.  She has links that I had never really thought of.  Great. Wonderful. Amazing to see this.  Her story is a secret that is well to be known.  And the grace she is left with, that person could be explained in reading the series - if you haven't yet.

I don't know how Michael does it, but when we finally get Royce and Hadrian banter it is wonderful!  Just like old friends for me.  They click so easily for me as a pair, even when they hate each other and think of ways to kill the other.

This is an amazing addition to the Riyria world.  The way it all began.  I could say you could read this one before or after the series, but if after you might catch more connections.

Have you Heard?

The amazing Michael J. Sullivan is continuing with stories in the world we've fallen in love with.  Sweet, right!

I'm excited, but I don't know if I can wait until August 2013.  Wow, that's one looooong wait.  But I'm relieved and thrilled he's back in this world.

If you would like to read what Michael is sharing about this, you can at his blog.  This is where our duo first meet.  Exciting tale, I do think. :)

The Crown Tower
Volume One of the Riyria Chronicles
By:  Michael J. Sullivan
Due Out:  August 2013
The Teaser:

Two men who hate each other.
One impossible mission.
A legend in the making.

A warrior with nothing to fight for is paired with a thieving assassin with nothing to lose. Together they must steal a treasure that no one can reach. The Crown Tower is the impregnable remains of the grandest fortress ever built and home to the realm’s most valuable possessions. But it isn’t gold or jewels the old wizard is after, and this prize can only be obtained by the combined talents of two remarkable men. Now if Arcadias can just keep Hadrian and Royce from killing each other, they just might succeed.

Then you know you find an authors writing you enjoy, so you start digging for more work, well I did that with Michael.  Michael has also added anthologies to his list.  I found there are a few Anthologies to come with stories by him in.  No, they are not Riyria Revelation world stories, but that's okay they are fantasy and I love my fantasy.  And there are additional amazing authors in these as well...

The next is yet to be released, there is quite the cast of authors in this one and also benefits a cancer fighter:

Unfettered
Edited By:  Shawn Speakman
Due Out:  2013

Description of benefit and what you'll find:
You define life or it defines you.

In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both.

Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hogdkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story Shawn could sell toward alleviating those bills—and suggested Shawn ask the same of his other friends.

Unfettered is the result, an anthology built to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

Every story in this volume is new and, like the title suggests, the writers were free to write whatever they wished. Authors contributing are Terry Brooks, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, Jacqueline Carey, Tad Williams, Geno & R.A. Salvatore, Naomi Novik, Peter V. Brett, Daniel Abraham, Lev Grossman, David Anthony Durham, Peter Orullian, Blake Charlton, Eldon Thompson, Michael J. Sullivan, Robert V.S. Redick, Carrie Vaughn, Mark Lawrence, Kevin Hearne, Jennifer Bosworth, and artist Todd Lockwood, who donated artwork as well as a story.

With the help of stalwart friends and these wonderful short stories, Shawn has taken the gravest of life hardships and created something magical. Unfettered is not only a fantastic anthology in its own right but it’s a testament to the generosity found in the science fiction and fantasy community—proof that humanity can give beyond itself when the need arises.

After all, isn’t that the driving narrative in fantasy literature?

Anything else I find I'll share.

Who? What? Where? (48)

Who are you with? Where are you at? What's happening?

Share with us just a little bit of what is happening in the book you are reading, right where you are now.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.

(This is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )

I'm actually between books at the moment.  So I thought I'd give you a quick scene from Percepliquis, my last read.

I stand with Arista, and several others, on the shores of a sea in the caves shining with a green light.  We made it this far, down the climb and through the narrow caverns.  Now, what dangers lay ahead of us?  It can't be easy, since other groups have made this journey and never returned, but we have a few special people with us.

Book Review: Percepliquis

Percepliquis

By:  Michael J. Sullivan

Format:  Paperback, 553pgs

Publisher:  Ridan (but series now with Orbit ~ see covers below)

Publish Date:  January 2012

Series:  6th in Riyria Revelations series; 1st Book ~ The Crown Conspiracy, 2nd Book ~ Avempartha, 3rd Book ~ Nyphron Rising, 4th Book ~ The Emerald Storm, 5th Book ~ Wintertide

Recommendation:  OH HELL YES!!  Go buy it, go buy it now! You love fantasy, you NEED, NEED THIS ONE!

Book Synopsis:
IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS
THE ELVES HAVE CROSSED THE NIDWALDEN
AND TWO THIEVES WILL DECIDE THE FUTURE

I saw a great journey.  Ten upon the road, she who wears the light will lead the way.  The road goes deep into the earth, and into despair.  The voices of the dead guide your steps.  You walk back in time.  The three-thousand-year battle begins again.  Cold grips the world, death comes to all, and a choice i before you.

Percepliquis is the final installment of the epic fantasy, The Riyria Revelations.  In this saga that began with The Crown Conspiracy, two thieves caught in the right place at the wrong time were launched on a series of ever escalating adventures that have all led to this moment.  Three thousand years have passed and the time for Novron's heir to act has arrived.

First Sentence:
Miranda had been certain that the end of the world would begin like this - without warning, but with fire.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Fire and deaths.  Women and children are on the run.  Men are fighting for their kingdom and homes against attackers we have feared would come. (if you've read the series you have an idea who the attackers are.)  Arista's having horrible nightmares, Royce is depressed after the ending in Wintertide, and Hadrian feels guilt.  The kingdoms are coming together under the ruling heir, Modina, as predicted, but without the horn it might all be destroyed.  The Elves are retaking their lands to the way it was before humans existed.  Our friends through the series have one last quest, that could be the death of them but with out it they will die anyway, they all want or need to go on, for different reasons but for the same result, to save man kind.

Screaming from the rooftops, MASTERFUL!  This is THE way to end a magnificent fantasy series.

Michael weaves all the books together into this one, pulling pieces together and setting the world; past, present and future, in clear view for us.  Some pieces he pulls is: the place on the cover of Nyphron Rising (one of my favorite scenes for a character that comes into her own here) is brought into an all new light.  The Gilarabrywn, or dragon type creature, and the Elves which we may have had lots of questions on from the Avempartha.  The sailing of the seas from The Emerald Storm is revisited, in a new place.  Mentions of the starts of this all and who was pulling the strings, back to The Crown Conspiracy.  Just amazing the way Michael took two plain and simple thieves, to create an outstanding series and amazing ending.

This one book holds all the missing pieces we didn't realize we were missing, yet piecing all the secreted comments throughout the series together to complete everything.  Five hundred and fifty pages of complete necessity to put the finishing touches on creating the world, the history, the characters.  Still surprising me and making me love the characters all over again.  Michael has taken a series to all different levels through out this series, and this book is a fabulous ending to it all!

I laughed and cried and worried.  Both for happiness and sadness, of many reasons -- the characters and their hardships and humor.  Then there is the series completion.  I loved every minute of reading this one, and all the books.  I will admit, I was a little hesitant at starting this one -- I didn't want the series to end as I loved it so much.  But I have to say I LOVED this book, such a perfect ending.  I can't describe how well the ending fit for me, all the way to the last sentence.  I don't think I can write a review that will give this book it's well deserved justice, or even the series itself.  I am just floored with it all; the story, the characters, the depth of the world completed.  All of it completed.  And an action packed finale.

Royce has earned his right to be in a bad place (mentally mostly) after the ending of Wintertide, which I was a little nervous about.  I was just afraid the team wouldn't have their spark, but they had it.  Oh they had it.  Seeing the characters grow and live through emotions is what makes the book the best, digging deep in us to care.  I have always loved the kind heart in Hadrian, but this book...well he has stolen my heart, warming it through and through.  We learn of some history with Hadrian and Royce, their first job together, and of their thoughts of each other then.  All the characters have their numerous shining moments in this book; Royce, Hadrian, Arista, Modina, Mauvin, Alric, Myron! and so many more!

Outstanding journey, that left me in amazement.  Wow.  Just plain wow.

This series is top shelf keeper, re-reader for me.  I will always ALWAYS go back to my adventures with Royce and Hadrian, and the others.

Now, do you want to buy this series?  I say go get it, you need it.  The books are out by Orbit now and you can pick them up anywhere.  Just look for these new covers in your fantasy section:

Heir of Novron, coming January 31, 2012!

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review, although I would have begged and pleaded to get a copy to finish the series as I've loved it so.

Book Review: The Viscount and the Witch

The Viscount and the Witch

By:  Michael J. Sullivan

Publisher:  Ridan Publishing

Publish Date:  October 2011

Format:  eShort Story

Genre:  Fantasy

Series:  1st in The Riyria Chronicles

Recommendation:  YES!  I love revisiting and learning of Royce and Hadrian's beginnings.  And seeing their personalities again.

Book Synopsis:
Eleven years before they were framed for the murder of a king, before even assuming the title of Riyria, Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater were practically strangers.  Unlikely associates, this cynical thief and idealist swordsman, were just learning how to work together as a team.  In this standalone first installment of The Riyria Chronicles, Royce is determined to teach his naive partner a lesson about good deeds.  Join Royce and Hadrian in this short story (5,400 words) about one of their earliest adventures.

First Sentence:
A woman wielding a broom charged at them, looking as much like a witch as anyone Hadrian had ever seen.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Hadrian always a soft heart stops to see what the ragged dressed woman, tripping through the brush, is calling to him and Royce, his partner of just about a year, for help.  There is an unknown man in her barn and she fears for her life.  Hadrian wants to go take care of the problem, Royce is ready to move on but lets Hadrian learn a lesson on people.

I'm not going to say to much as it's such a short read and if I do I just might give it all way.  I want you to go read this quick read for yourself and enjoy it.

First and foremost, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO READ THE SERIES TO READ THIS.  Actually, you could read this to get a taste of Hadrian and Royce.

I loved getting to see these two characters again, Hadrian and Royce.  I love them, Hadrian and his big soft heart and Royce with his syndicalism of the two.  But the two together are fun.  There are jokes, the familiarity of the two carrying on together, and a great story as well.  I love the way Royce is and the mystery with him. Even knowing Royce after five books of the series I still love the mystery here. And do want to know more!

The nice thing about this short story is mention of some of the future characters in the series.  You are introduced to some names and who they are, which will give you a little background for when you read the series.  And yes, I think once you read this short story you will want the series.  Michael has created amazing characters and a great world here that all should read.  I do hope you go check this out.

Also included with this short story is the first chapter of Theft of Swords, to be released in November, then the next two books each month after.

So, do you want to read this short story?  Well, just your luck as it's a free download! Yep! Absolutely Free!  Follow this link over to the site and download the version that works best for you.  Do enjoy!

I read this short story for my own enjoyment.

This book qualifies for the Speculative Fiction Reading Challenge hosted by Floor to Ceiling books.

Short Story Released!

I have to share this!

You all know how much I've enjoyed reading the Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan.  Yes, they keep coming up around here.  But I really have enjoyed the books.  And I'm patiently (trying to be) waiting for the last and final book of the series.  As many of you are waiting for the series to start with Orbit books (November, and each month after for 3 till out).

I have a special treat!
While we are all waiting Michael has a short story from when Royce & Hadrian first started as a team.  The Viscount and the Witch.

I think you can read this alone as it's before the Riyria Revelations and shouldn't spoil anything, from the sounds of it.  I'll be looking to pick this one up.

It's on Amazon for only $.99.  Yes, 99 cents!  Want it?
Yes, they are ebooks and different formats but it's only a short story of 5,400 words. :)

Synopsis:
Eleven years before they were framed for the murder of a king, before even assuming the title of Riyria, Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater were practically strangers. Unlikely associates, this cynical thief and idealist swordsman, were just learning how to work together as a team. Check it out on Facebook

Here's your chance to check out a few chapters of this fantasy series I've been raving about for so long.

As many of you know I'm a fan of the fantasy series The Riyria Revelation by Michael J. Sullivan.  If you are a follower for some time now I've shared with you that Orbit Books has picked up the series and will be publishing the 6 book series in 3 books over three months; November 2011, December 2011, January 2012.  Great accomplishment for Michael.

Now I have a little more news for you as well.

The Riyria Revelations is now on Facebook to Like.  When you Like it you get the chance to read for Free the beginning chapters of the books.

Now me, I'm looking for Percepliquis the last book of the series.  Yes, I'm going to get a copy of this one to read, but the curiosity is getting to me. ;)

Curious about the series?  I've read the books as 6 individuals, but they are pretty much the same idea blended into 3 books.
You can read all my reviews, I try to keep them all spoiler free:

I've done interviews with Michael as well, if you would like to look over those as well...

Most Memorable Blog Moment...

One of my most memorable blog moments is also the first memorable moment too.  It was with one of my first book reviews.  I reviewed the first book in, what I would come come to find as, a wonderful fantasy series loving each book more and more.  I enjoyed the first book so and write one of my first reviews here. (you can check it out here.)  I was extremely surprised and excited when the author stopped by to say thank you.  I never expected this to happen.  Authors were kind of like movie stars to me.  Someone you admire and think on from a far.  Blogging and all this Internet interaction has really changed that view for me and given me a chance to meet many great people who happen to be talented with words.  I had always thought authors might shy away from reviews, whether good or bad, not because they don't appreciate them but more of a business end.

But I was thrilled to have this author stop by, and it lead to my very first author interview.  It's not as detailed in questions as now, but I did have the author back for a second interview later.

Who was the author and series?  Michael J. Sullivan, author of the Riyria Revelations, starting with The Crown Conspiracy.

Michael is now coming to a close in this series and starting it again with Orbit books.  And his journey continues on.

I asked Michael to join in the posting fun this week.  Thank you Michael for stopping by to share your growth with us.  It's been one amazing adventure thus far, and keeps going for you.
.......
Michael Sullivan:

I found Melissa via Google Alerts. It is a dirty secret that many authors utilize. We have feelers out on the net and like spiders we know whenever anyone mentions our names, or the names of our books. One day I found Melissa’s review on The Crown Conspiracy, and she is absolutely right, at the time I never made comments on reviews, good or bad. It just felt wrong to enter into a dialog with someone trying to honestly give an opinion of your work. It would be like overhearing two friends talking about you and then walking over and glaring at them as if to suggest: you better be saying nice things!

I made an exception with Melissa’s review because…well I was stupid. I saw the post on the very cute blog and thought to myself, how nice that this person read my books and decided to write a review for her friends about it. I mistakenly thought My World was a tiny, personal blog that a very unassuming, quiet, woman wrote for the entertainment of a handful of close friends. I didn’t see any harm in posting there. Few were likely to see my comments. It was much later that my wife explained how wrong I was. Melissa, as it turns out is an Internet celebrity. I don’t know how active she still is in it but at the time she was a huge contributor on the Barnes and Noble Fantasy and Science Fiction Book Club and even to this day is the most “laureled authors” there. (A laurel is awarded when someone likes one of your posts and Melissa has more than 2,200 of them).

Who knew?

My ignorance, however, resulted in making a powerful friend who has since gone on to herald my books, and defend my virtue throughout cyberdom.

Sometimes you get lucky.

And now for her two year jubilee Melissa has given me the chance to tell you about my books. I’m not here to try and sell them to you; Melissa has already done a fine job spreading the word. She just asked me to tell you a little about the behind the scene drama leading up to now, as apparently unassuming, quiet, women feel such things are interesting to hear about.

I started writing in high school, stapling together books I wrote on a typewriter. I painted the covers back then too. Interestingly enough, those had been fantasy stories about two adventuring thieves named Tagemart and Corin, who bore a striking resemblance to Hadrian and Royce. I married Robin who, drew me out of the fantasy and sci-fi realm and got me reading from a diverse set of authors. I attended only a year of art school and then a few semesters at a community college before I got my first job as an illustrator/designer. That’s when my real education began, and for the first time I started reading the classics and tried to dissect what “the greats” were doing through their writing.

When we had our first child, I stayed home to raise her because Robin made more money than I did. I used my spare time to write novels. We soon moved to the remote northern reaches of Vermont where we didn’t know anyone and the winters are long and isolating. While there I wrote ten novels while reading and studying the best books I could find. I tried to get published and after a decade of failure I quit.

I gave up writing back in 1995 when we left Vermont for North Carolina, and vowed never to write creatively again. I went back into commercial art and started my own advertising agency. I was successful enough to hire Robin as my president. Often we needed copy for ads or brochures, but I never wrote them. I never wrote anything. It was too painful. I had spent too many years wasting my time writing.

Then my second daughter, who was about 13 at the time, was having trouble reading. In an attempt to help her, I bought Harry Potter (which I had heard was popular) and by happenstance read the first book myself. Reading it was just so much fun that I began thinking about writing something myself, something my daughter might like. Back then I had a lot of time on my hands and there was this new thing called the Internet. I decided to write a series of six books—nothing important, nothing literary, just something that would be fun, something to get my daughter to like reading. I wrote the first three and posted them on the Internet for free. No one read them. Not even my daughter who insisted that they had to be published first (she has a quirk about reading loose pages).

In 2005, I decided to close my advertising agency, I had become tired of doing the same job over and over. We moved to the DC area where my wife started a new career as a product manager and I decided I would try one last time to get published. I got an agent, and the books made their rounds but did not find a home. My agent left the business and once more my writing career appeared to die.

I finished the 4th and 5th books of the series and no one was interested in reading them, not even my wife, who at that time was having problems with her job and we, as a family, were having financial problems. Once more I considered giving up writing and went in search of a job to help out, but the recession was on and I don’t interview well. Then in the dark of the winter of 2007, I began writing the last book of the series. I wrote it because it seemed wrong not to complete the story. I also thought that perhaps one day, after I was long dead, someone might find and read the books and if the last book was never completed, they would be quite upset. So I wrote it, and when I was done, I was amazed. When I typed the last few words of that book, I knew it was good. I had this huge grin on my face knowing I had created something wonderful, and it didn’t matter if the world knew it or not.

Still, I was depressed that Robin had never read them and when she noticed just how miserable I had become she sat down and read the series to make me feel better. Once she started, I’m not sure she slept. She even took a day off work because she finished the fifth book, Wintertide, at 6:30 in the morning and she just had to know how it all would end.

She loved them.

That was all I needed. I was happy—but she wasn’t. Robin took it on herself to make sure the books would be published. She started sending it to smaller publishers who would accept unagented manuscripts and found a tiny publisher in Minnesota called AMI who agreed to publish The Crown Conspiracy.

AMI ran into financial problems and were unable to publish the second book in the series. They waited until March to let me know this even though the book was scheduled to be released in April. The only way to release it on time was to do it ourselves so Robin and I pooled our talents and published Avempartha in April 2009. Because self-published books had a terrible stigma associated with them, Robin invented a publishing company and called it Ridan.

Then a funny thing happened. Other writers in the middle of series watched their publishers go out of business due to the recession. Feeling sorry for them, Robin released their books through the Ridan banner. We met people at conventions, other struggling writers, and we picked them up. Soon Robin was hunting for other writers, those that had self published good books, but weren’t selling well. Ridan—this originally make-believe publisher—was becoming a real entity.

I published the first four books of the Riyria Revelations with each one coming out six months after the one before. Robin edited them and I did the layout and cover art. They received good reviews, and Robin promoted them using social networking and by courting book bloggers to do reviews. We found a few people, like Melissa, who loved them and made a point of telling everyone they ran across. Soon I had a few foreign publishers asking for language rights and that led us to Teri, who negotiated the deals.

What happened in the next few weeks was amazing.

Robin began to think that maybe we should try for a big publisher again. I told her that once the last book was out I didn’t care what she did with the series. We both expected it would take years to even get an agent, much less obtain an offer. So Robin decided to get the machinery moving and in September asked Teri if she was interested in representing the series domestically and to our surprise she was.

In October 2010, the fifth book hit the street, and my sales jumped as they usually do with a new release. Teri had put together a proposal and sent it to just over a dozen New York publishers. She immediately had several interested. What was supposed to take two years, if it happened at all, took a month. We accepted Orbit’s offer in mid November (though no one knew about it – the official announcement came in February 2011). Orbit had decided to repackage the series of six into a trilogy, with each book having two parts: Theft of Swords (The Crown Conspiracy & Avempartha), Rise of Empire (Nyphron Rising & The Emerald Storm), and Heir of Novron (Wintertide & Percepliquis).

But good fortune was not done with me yet. A few weeks later my sales went ballistic. I went from selling 1,000 books a month to 10,000. I started feeling like a superstar when I went to New York to do a signing for the ARC (Advanced Reading Copies) of Theft of Swords at BookExpo (a large trade show where all the big publishing people hang). The first reviews are just now starting to appear and so far it looks like the newly revamped version is going to have a very nice reception.

The first book of the trilogy will be officially, (and poetically,) released in November. The second book will follow a month later, and the last book, which will include the final, and as yet, unreleased Percepliquis, in January 2012. Percepliquis will also be released as a standalone print and ebook for those who have the others and want to complete the set.

Meanwhile, that little publishing company that Robin had started, continues to grow without my books. She’s helped to turn a number of once unknown authors into best sellers including science fiction writers Nathan Lowell and Marshall Thomas, and fantasy author Leslie Ann Moore. She’s doing something really different, making a publishing company that puts the author’s interests first and foremost and that is attracting the attention of industry heavyweights. She recently signed none other than Joe Haldeman, and is publishing the ebook version of his classic The Forever War.

So there you have the story of Riyria and Ridan, though we have been at this for quite some time I think we might just be at the beginning. I can’t wait to see where things go from here and I’m very aware that none of this would have been possible without people like Melissa, and others in the blogging community, who took a chance to read some books from a little nobody and liked them enough to tell some others. Thank you…and congratulations on two years of helping to make this author’s dreams (and I’m sure many others) come true.
......

Thank you Michael!  It has been a pleasure reading you books, and I'm so glad I could help in just a small way.  Best of luck to you with the next leg of your journey.

Interview with Fantasy Author Michael Sullivan

I have a wonderful treat for you today!  I have an interview with the author of the fantasy series, Riyria Revelation.  AND if you have been up to par on the series, there might be a few hints down a ways in the interview if you are curious for Percepliquis.  And if you are a follower of the series, Michael has some wonderful news to share!  So read on to check it out...

M:  Hello Michael.  It is wonderful to have you back here again.

First and foremost, I believe there is a HUGE congratulation due to you Michael. :) I believe you have a big announcement for a tremendous step for the Riyria Series. Would you like to share it again here?

MS:  Hey Melissa, thanks for having me back, and for all the support and good things you’ve said about my little series over the years.  In October 2010 my wife, Robin, had noticed that my books were cross-selling well with a lot of mainstream authors and this got her thinking that perhaps it was time to look into taking the books to the next level and seeing if one of the big-six publishers would be interested.  To be honest, I don’t think either of us expected anything to come of this but in less than a month we had several major publishers interested and agreed on an offer from Orbit Books who will be producing the Riyria Revelations. They are the fantasy imprint of the Hachette Book Group, the second largest publishing company in the world.

M:  This really is a big jump and a wonderful opportunity for you and this wonderful series!  I wish you all the best.

MS:  Thanks…we’re very excited. Of all fantasy publishers we really think that Orbit does a fantastic job and we’re really looking forward to having them promoting the series.

M:  I don't know if you know yet, if you do, can you share with us the publishing dates so we big fans can mark the calendars on when to head to the stores?

MS:  Sure, and this is one of the great things about Orbit and why we went with them. Usually a publisher will put out one book every twelve or eighteen months and the first book usually hits the street about eighteen months after the contract is signed.  For something like the Riyria Revelations (which is six-books) this would mean years and years until we get to the final installment.  This was the one thing I was most worried about.  But Orbit is so excited about the project that they fast-tracked it which means they put it into the next available release cycle (fall/winter 2011). But even better than that, they will release the books in back-to-back months so the will come out very quickly. The last thing they did was combine the books in three two-book versions so the release schedule goes like this: Theft of Swords (Crown Conspiracy & Avempartha) in November 2011, Rise of Empire (Nyphron Rising and Emerald Storm) in December 2011, Heir of Novron (Wintertide & Percepliquis) in January 2012.

One other thing I should note is that Orbit has agreed to put out a Percepliquis only version for those who have already read the other five. This was a big concern for those who have five of the six books. They will be using my cover design so this version of the book will match the rest of the series. For those that are part way through the series, and care about the covers matching I suggest you buy the rest now as they will be discontinued soon.
M:  So glad that Orbit is so flexible with the books to do the fast track and have them ready just a month apart from each other.  Can't wait to see them!

M:  What scene in all this did you enjoy the most in writing? Why?

MS:  Oh, I see what you’re doing…you’re trying to get me to give away things in Percepliquis.  Unfortunately if I told I’d ruin it for you and I’m sure you don’t want that. But I will say that of the entire series 90% of my favorite scenes are in that final book and one of the reasons it is my favorite in the series. So, since I can’t tell you those…let me pick out some favorites from already released titles.

For the Crown Conspiracy I’m especially fond of Myron and the squirrel tree. This is a scene where a monk is forced to leave the only place he has ever known as home discusses leaving behind the grave of a childhood friend. I love the emotion of that scene.

In Avempartha, I liked the tension of the chase scene when Royce, Hadrian, Theron, and Thrace are being attacked by the Gilarabrywn as they are racing back to the castle.

In Nyphron Rising I get a real cinematic impression when Arista stands up, sword in hand, and drenched in rain as she faces off against the Imperial Army.

My favorite scene in Emerald Storm involves Arista and her bodyguard Hilfred. I’d love to provide more detail about that but I feel that I’d spoil it for those who have not read the book yet. After reading the story I’m sure you’ll be able to point out what it is.

My favorite scene in Wintertide also would be a spoiler, so I’ll provide some hints…it involves Modina (the empress) and Regent Saldur, read the book and it should be obvious. My wife’s favorite scene in that book is not a spoiler so I’ll throw that out as well it is when Nimbus is teaching Hadrian the various virtue of being a knight. He makes some observations on Hadrian’s sword but is really describing the man that wields it. She says that’s why she likes that scene the most, but it could also be because Hadrian is naked in a bath in that one.
M:  Well, can't blame a girl for trying. ;D I'm really looking forward to this last book now!

What was the most challenging scene for you to write and why?

MS:  I often hear about author’s who have writer’s block, or who struggle with one scene or another. To be honest I really have never experienced that. My writing flows pretty unabated and I’ve never really struggled with writing a single scene.  I can visualize them in my head really well and its just a matter of letting my fingers fly.

I will say that I did struggle with the ending of the series. I had come up with five different ways I could have gone with it.  They each had their own pluses and minuses but I still wanted…more.  I wanted something really special and while all of them were “good” they weren’t “good enough”.  So I pondered and thought on this for months. Then it came to me out of the blue and it was as if the pieces fell together perfectly. It required me to do some rewrites in the previous books to plant some seeds and lay some foundations but the tweaks were minimal and the end result is spectacular. I know that sounds really conceited, and writers are supposed to be humble about their work, but the ending blew even me away. There are sometimes when things are “just right” and that’s how I feel about the ultimate way in which the books are concluded so while it may be immodest, I couldn’t be happier with what the final outcome was.

M:  Do you have a favorite line from the series?

MS:  Interesting question…most of my favorite lines will make no sense when taken out of context. For instance in Percepliquis, one of my favorites is, “It is…it really is.” I know what you’re thinking…pretty unremarkable, huh? And yet, in context it means a lot to me and will to the reader. Most of my favorite lines are that way…to others they won’t mean much but to me personally they are special.

There are obviously a lot of lines that were written for people to take note of. Places where I weave a bit of philosophy or try to say something with a degree of depth. But for me to say those are favorites of mine would seem a bit pretentious.  One of the neat things about the Kindle (although a bit 1984ish) is that when enough people highlight a particular line it shows up on the book’s page.  So I’ve seen what lines others respond to.  For instance, “One truth doesn’t refute another. Truth doesn’t lie in the object, but in how we see it,” from Nyphron Rising. I’m glad that others have found this line noteworthy and I really enjoy seeing which ones people pick out. But to be honest those lines are more for them than myself.

M:  It seems we are getting ready to come to a close with the Riyria Series.  Are you excited? Bummed?  What feeling are you going through?

MS:  I can’t wait for the final book to come out…excited doesn’t even come close to covering my emotions.  Because all six books were written before the first was released, and the fact that they are not just a series of sequels but were designed to build one upon another, it meant that everything that has come before is really just setting the stage for the final grand finale. To be honest, I think as individual books they are entertaining in their own right, but when combined they are more than the sums of their individual parts something that I’m especially proud of.

Once you read the final book, I hope you’ll go back and read the series from the beginning. I think if you do you’ll see a lot of things in a much different light. I’ve planted little morsels throughout the books that have no real significance at the time they were revealed to you, but once the whole story is known you should see them in a much different light. To me that is the really exciting thing and until the last book is out a big part of the fun of the series is left hidden.

M:  Speaking of Percepliquis... It seems the world is going to be in big trouble, as the Heir didn't make it to the Horn for Wintertide.  We still have the 'people' from the island, and the Elves are still a question for me.  Is there any hints you could drop us about or favorite characters and what will happen to them?  Will there be a big fight/war scene?

MS:  Again, trying to get me to spill the beans, huh? Well I don’t blame you and because you’ve been so supportive of the series I’ll let you in on a few things.  First let’s set the stage. In many ways where people are now (if they have finished the fifth book) is an interesting place in the overall tale. On one hand, many of the major conflicts are resolved. People long imprisoned are free, bad guys are vanquished, wars have ended. With the exception of one major character that goes through a major change at the end of Wintertide, things are pretty well wrapped up nicely…but.

As you noted there have been hints dropped about the elves and the ending of the Uli Vermar. For three thousand years they have left mankind alone, bound by treaty to stay on their side of the Nidwalden River. With the ending of Wintertide, that time is over and now the only thing that can stop them from revenge is the Heir of Novron and only by using the Horn of Gylindora. So yes, the book is primarily separated into two parts, a team that must find the horn and the rest who must survive against the elven onslaught.

As far as characters and what to expect from them…well there is just too much good stuff there for me to even start into. If I do, I’ll spoil things for sure. But I will say one thing that many should be pleased about…and that is the return of Myron. He is often reported as a favorite and with the exception of a few cameos in Wintertide he’s been mostly absent from the series since his debut in The Crown Conspiracy. Myron is back in Percepliquis, but in a very new way. He has grown much over the years since leaving the confines of his sheltered life at the Winds Abbey. He’s had to deal with loss and guilt and has come to some interesting revelations about life over the years. It was pure joy having him back and if people get one tenth of the enjoyment in reading about him as I had writing then there should be some good times ahead.
M:  Oh man, just enough to make me starve for more.  I'm REALLY looking forward to Percepliquis.

So many times you have been called 'the little Indie that could'.  What is one big thing you have learned through this journey that you could share with us?  That might help others trying to get through too.  About publishing, writing, anything.

MS:  The biggest thing is perseverance. If you write something that YOU really enjoy and you think will resonate with others then YOU are the only one that can guarantee its failure by giving up. There are few overnight successes in this business and you will suffer many defeats...bad reviews, rejection letters, low sales, difficulty in getting the word out, the list goes on and on such that it would seem impossible. But here’s the thing.  I think success has three components: Talent, skill, and perseverance.  The good news is you control two of those three.

When I say talent, I mean the ability to weave a good story. To think up characters and plots that are compelling. For the most part this is something that you can either do or not.  It is something you are born with and you can improve over time but in many ways storytellers are born not made. If you are one – then you’re in good shape.

Skill is easier as it can be taught and therefore learned. It’s the techniques you use to weave the story. Some is technical (grammar, sentence structure) and some of it is developed through practice (pacing, show verses tell, writing good dialog, building tension).  You obtain skill by practicing, reading, working at getting better each day and it is totally within your control.

There are many that say it takes luck to be published and in some cases that is true. Someone happens to write a particular book that times the market just perfectly that it becomes a huge success. But in most cases there are not single opportunities to “make it”. Perseverance is a way of making your own luck by ensuring you are in the right place at the right time. You may pitch an idea a hundred times and get ninety-nine no’s and if you stopped at twenty, or fifty, or eighty you never would have gotten to that one yes. Again, this is something the writer has total control over. If they have the first two ingredients: Talent and skill then it really is just a matter of time until the last piece falls into place.

M:  I've heard your wonderful wife has assisted you in this adventurous journey in a great way.  How has this worked out for you, married and living together and working together?  Sounds like it could be hard at times.

MS:  My writing is not the first project we’ve worked on together. In fact, we’re happiest when we are side by side as we both have strengths where another has weaknesses and therefore complement each other. It started nearly thirty years ago when we both worked at the same Orthotics Lab (shoe inserts for people with foot problems).  Later I was hired into a software company that she worked at (she did project management, and I did marketing).  After that, we spent ten years running our own marketing company (Spectrum Design) she was the President and I was the Creative Director. In all these cases we were joined at the hip nearly twenty four hours a day, riding to work together, sharing lunches, and so on. So as you can see, we really don’t get tired of one another.

Robin has contributed an amazing amount to the books as a whole, sometimes making me add entire chapters or restructuring the book from the ground up. She’s great at finding flaws in logic or plot holes and making sure they are addressed so you guys don’t even know they existed. Beyond the writing though her biggest contribution has been on the business side of things. She is the one that has done all the work of promotion, finding agents, and working with publishers.

The only real difficulty was in editing Wintertide. While we often disagree during the editing process, in most cases it’s been pretty easy to make changes when it was just the two of us. For Wintertide, however, we had an intern working on the project and so I felt pulled in two directions instead of just one. I think the end result was a better book but the process was painful and I was put between a rock and a hard place. When there was disagreement between the two of them I found myself between a rock and a hard place and no matter who I sided with the other would be understandably disappointed.
M:  Wonderful relationship and sounds like you both are great together. :) So glad to hear that as you don't hear it much anymore these days.
What is next on your list to do?  Any more fantasy book writing in the future?

MS:  My current work is a book entitled Antithesis. Unlike the Riyria Revelations it is set in modern times but does have a fantasy element in that the story involves magic and the timeless theme of the struggle between good and evil. I also have a few Riyria related books that I’m outlining and thinking through in a very background way.  I left a few tangents in the book that I could explore in more detail…things like: The original story of Novron and the founding the original empire; Esrahaddon’s story of a young mage learning the Art; The early years of Royce and Hadrian…how they met, some failures they had in early missions, etc.  There are also two or three other threads that I can’t get into as again it would spoil some of the fun of Percepliquis. I’m not sure if I’ll actually do anything with these stories, a lot depends on if Riyria continues to be successful and if the fans want more from this world.

I also need to release A Burden to the Earth which is a novel I finished years ago and just never got around to putting the final touches on.  It is not fantasy (it’s mainstream literary fiction) and so some of my existing fans might not be interested, but from a pure “writing standpoint” it is probably my best work.

M:  Okay, a fun question for you which I started asking on my interviews... If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you like to visit?

MS:  I’ve always dreamed of going to Australia and New Zealand. The landscape there is just so varied and beautiful and I’m intrigued by the diversity of plants and animals.  I’ve heard there is a spider that weaves webs between trees to catch birds…come on who wouldn’t want to see that?  And a duckbilled platypus?  That’s just a writer’s dream of the interesting and unique. I’ve also always wanted to go to Ireland where my families roots are (and there are still many relatives that live there). Orbit has a very large UK and Australia presence so if anyone from there is listening…I think a few book signing tours there is essential for the launch and someone should get right on it ;-)
M:  Good luck to you Michael and I hope you get to travel to Australia and New Zealand.  Oh, if you should happen to need an assistant and Robin's not able to go just let me know. ;D They would be wonderful places to visit.
Thank you again Michael.  I always enjoy having you by.  I do wish you all the best with your new adventure and all you do, in words and pages.

MS:  No, thank you Melissa, my success is, in a large way, the result of the book blogging community so where Riyria has gone is as much due to you and your efforts as it has been mine. Feel free to have me back anytime. I love the questions and am thrilled that someone is interested in anything that I have to say.

M:  Thank you and wishing you all the best in words and pages...
