Blue Blooded

First Impression:  High octane to the end. All falls into place with the Coalition & life.

Purchase At:
Amazon

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I was offered a copy of this book from the author or publisher for review.

Jessica is on her fight to survive and live with those she loves. I love how she never stops trying and caring for those around her. Jessica has really collected quite the entourage of friends. All are special in their own ways and match perfectly to their mates and Jessica. Yes, everyone (well, just about) ends up paired up with a mate.

We get the fun interactions and magic all characters have to share in this book. Everyone is at their best and shows it. We even get the great fights that have been part of Jessica's stories. However, I was a little bummed at the big battle. I was expecting more. The ease of the death of one character... There was so much troubles with another of similar status, and this one was quickly dispatched. I know she was of a different origin in her area of expertise, but still that easy? I understand Jessica is being protected (for reasons I can't say - you'll just have to read!) so that keeps the scene to a limited view as well.

I love that all the characters we've crossed in previous books show up here in name and more in person. It's great to see how all the previous books trickled in to bring Jessica to this point in her life. And a great reminder of all she's been through. And all have brought Jessica to this point, all friends and actions of previous books. We read the connections to all that Jessica's been through to get to this point in her life, what has formed Jessica to be who she is. I love when these connections are made in a series, it shows how all of it was needed to be lived through.

Amanda did a wonderful job of tying all the books, events, people, and more together here to end the series. Amanda has once again created a high octane read that I didn't want to stop reading. I wanted to see/hear about everyone and learn all I could with why Jessica and how it would fit together for the new Coalition. And I got that!

In the end, we have a conclusion. But the world of supernatural is never at ease. This leaves a window opening that could bring us back to the world in the future, but this is the concluding book of the series arc.

Book Review: Pure Blooded

Pure Blooded

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  5th in Jessica McClain series; .5 Novella ~ Blooded, 1st Book ~ Full Blooded, 2nd Book ~ Hot Blooded, 3rd Book ~ Cold Blooded, 4th Book ~ Red Blooded

Impression:  Jessica fights on for her life and grows stronger for it.

Synopsis:
Jessica arrives back from the Underworld to find her father embroiled in a battle against the Made wolves. She and her crew drop everything to join them.

Once she arrives, the threat is after her. Jessica is lured into danger when her adversary takes something precious from her. With help from an unlikely source, Jessica goes up against her creator in a battle that will decide the path of everyone involved. She must war against a new set of foes, ones who could not only steal her power, but could take her soul as well.

First Sentence:
"Juanita! Juanita!" I yelled into the cell phone.

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles

My Thoughts and Summary:
*I requested this book for review from the publisher.

Something far more ancient than any Supe world has seen is after Jessica as she rushes to her father and pack to help against the Made wolves, now that she's returned from the Underworld. The one guiding the Made wolves is more than a simple priestess and wants Jessica's power. But Jessica is determined to not give up her wolf and save those in this area from the dark magic this woman possesses. Jessica has irritated one of the Hags with killing Ardat Lili in the Underworld, and she's determined to set Fate right. By killing Jessica, at any means.

The whole crew is back together! We get to have Rourke time along with seeing Jessica's little loyal pack together. It's so nice seeing them all interact with each other. We learn a detail about the adorable Danny. He's found his mate! And I love that we get some warrior woman time with Marcy as Jessica's backup. She is one power-kicking witch. Marcy is fun as she comes into her own in battles here. She has great sayings that make me smile through the rough moments of fighting. Jessica's neighbor, Juanita, plays an important part in this book. She doesn't actually appear with the crew in person but from a distance she's making a huge impact. She's more than we ever expected!

When you pick up a Jessica McClain story, expect to not breath as you read. Jessica is woman on the move and always in dire danger. She's strong and all the powers are seeking her magic. They come at her constantly and she is always on the go. Thank goodness Jessica has the strength at her side that she does.

This book is like two in one. The troubles with the Made wolves ends here. But we also face new trials for Jessica. She's always learning something new about her wolf and her powers. This time she learns about her position on the Coalition as well. Jessica also finds a new person to bring into her fold and family. Though this is where the story ends and this new person is exactly part of the family yet. We are left with knowing there are more situations that Jessica must step into. She's going to help a new person who's also a victim. Jessica still has the promise to the witches to help find Tally. And then there are the Hags...

I always enjoy Jessica's adventures. I'm one that loves the fast moving adventures with deep worlds. And Jessica gives me just that with all her action and large world of supernaturals. I will always be waiting for the next installment of Jessica and her battles to be released.

Book Review: Red Blooded

Red Blooded

By:  Amanda Carlson

Publish Date:  September 2, 2014

Publisher:  Orbit Books

Format:  eARC

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  4th of Jessica McClain series; 0.5 Novella ~ Blooded, 1st Book ~ Full Blooded, 2nd Book ~ Hot Blooded, 3rd Book ~ Cold Blooded

Recommendation:  And on we go, learning so much more of Jessica's world. And Jessica grows more in her powers and knowledge.

Synopsis:
After Jessica's brother is kidnapped and taken to the Underworld, she will stop at nothing to get him back. But before her grueling training is finished, Jessica's power mixes unexpectedly with the circle and she's dropped into the Underworld without protection or her escorts.

First Sentence:
...

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles  /  Book Depository

My Thoughts and Summary:
Jessica is preparing with Tally for her trip to the Underworld to save her brother, Tyler. While trying to learn to harness and eject demon magic from in the protective circle the witches have, Jessica inadvertently activates the doorway to the Underworld. Jessica finds herself in the hollows of the Underworld, all alone. The Demon essence becomes a part of her and she has to learn how to use it. And stay alive in the Underworld that's looking for her. Jessica finds a few unlikely allies while here. Jessica and her wolf are on their toes with where they are, but is it enough to keep her and her brother alive?

Holy Underworld! The plane Amanda has created here is outstanding! There is always something different and new to this land of the Underworld. It's what you expect and soooo much more! The creatures here, the setting and how they live. Wow. I am amazed at Amanda with creating something new in each book. The world is growing to a huge, endless circle here. There are creatures we've seen before and new ones we've not heard of. Boy, do we get a front view of the Underworld.

We meet new characters, and those we have known for some time. Those that we are friend with are here. I will say that half of the book is Jessica alone, then the last half is with our friends. But with Jessica being alone we meet new associates who could make a difference in the world.

If you've read the series thus far, you are probably asking about Selene. Yes, Selene is here. She did go to the Underworld in that book as we saw. And what you see here will baffle you. You will be shocked with what happens. I know I was, and my feelings even...dare I say...softened? You will understand as you read.

I love that Jessica and her wolf are so strong. That Jessica can be a character of her own and stand on her own. Her strength and ability to adapt and learn where ever she is, is amazing and what the story is all about. You learn more of her purpose in the world, the Lycan is here for a reason.

This story has romantic elements, but it's Jessica's story. She has been and continues to be determined and independent. She loves Rourke, but he doesn't define who she is. She will do anything for him and tries to compromise but she is strong willed as well. This is what I love with Jessica, she doesn't rate herself based on the man she's with. She stands on her own two feet (or four if needed). Though, she loves having him with her through everything and thinks of him when not.

Once again, Amanda leaves us at the end knowing there is another phase to Jessica's ongoing adventures. I can't wait to learn more! And at the ending, I wanted to flip more pages to learn about 'her'!

If you are a Jessica fan, you will love this book. On to the adventures Jessica will lead us barreling into.

Recommendation:  OH MY GODNESS!!! Do I love this series! Dang. Everything in one nice package for everyone. Urban Fantasy Action, Magic, Magical/Mythical Creatures galore, Story!, Characters, Love - of mated, family, and friends.  AMAZING BLEND!

Synopsis:
Jessica arrives back in town to find her best friend missing and the most powerful witch in the country is blaming her for it.  But before they can move to save her, the group is attacked.

On the run, Jessica and Rourke head to the mountains.  Several surprises await them, but in order to save her father they are forced to leave for New Orleans early.

Arriving on the Vampire Queen's doorstep unexpectedly, and bringing trouble on their heels, the Sects are thrown into an all out war.  The vicious skirmish ends up forcing the vamps and Jessica to fight on the same team.

The Vamp Queen ends up owing Jessica, but what Jessica doesn't realize is just how soon she'll have to cash it in...

First Sentence:
"Get down!" Tallulah Talbot, the most powerful witch in the country, grabbed on to my arm and hurled us both into the bushes.

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles  /  Book Depository

**I read this book for an honest review, as I requested from publisher.

My Thoughts and Summary:
***THIS REVIEW IS OF BOOK 3, MIGHT SPOIL PREVIOUS BOOK(S) ENDINGS***

An explosion hits the parking lot - a spell from the Sorcerers sent for Jessica.  On the run yet bond to find her missing best friend, Jessica heads to the heart of the witches coven, with the most powerful witch in the country - Tallulah (Tally) Talbot.  What Jessica learns there sends her on her run to help her father.  Tally has an oracle that sees Jessica and her family and friends - good news and bad news.  Away Jessica goes, hoping for the safety of her best friend Marcy and James and to help her father, while the Sorcerers and Demons follow on her tale working together to find her.  Every Sect is after her.  Jessica runs head first into the Vampires, who want her for their own reasons, looking to barter for protection.

An explosive set of happenings, from action to love, all in one place here!  Each page is full of new information and action.  Jessica is one of a kind, in more ways than one, and draws people of all Sects to her - in one way or another.

We start EXACTLY where Hot Blooded ended!  With Jessica and Tally at Jessica's office, yet in the bushes now.  So much happening here!  But well organized and all is handled by Jessica as she goes.  Much from the first two books lead to here.
   James and Marcy missing
   The Demon court date
   The vampire "party"
   Rourke!! *sigh*
   Every Sect after Jessica
her powers and what she is
the Southern pack and her Dad.

All collide right here!

Jessica's been having it rough.  Supes are out to get her, attacking her at about ever turn.  And it's taking all she has to not run off to find and save Rourke, but she knows she has to be prepared and get information first.  There are rumors flying of Jessica and what she is and what she'll do.  Each has more information about the prophecy.  And maybe Jessica is what it says...maybe not?

The supernatural world is all shaken up.  Sects are teaming up with each other, the one thing the DO NOT do, all because of Jessica.  Jessica's group is together because of her.  Others are teaming up, to stop her.  The supernatural world is changing.  Including wolves as someone is messing with them.

We have all our favorite characters once again.  We see them all!  Rourke is just plain amazing.  Wow.  Do he and Jessica finally get their moment?  Well, you'll have to read to see. *giggle*  We still have Tyler and Danny at Jessica's side helping her, along with her mate Rourke.  We have Naomi and Ray as well.  Oh, what we see of Ray.  There is something different about him, Naomi can't control him.  But just wait until you see what happens to/with him.  Yep.  You have to read for Ray.  So, we've been waiting to learn more of Rourke.  What he is, and oh so much more.  Yep.  YOU HAVE TO READ THIS ONE!  Everything we wanted, and much more, from Rourke.

You HAVE to read this series in order.  You don't have to read the Novella, but why not?  It's one of the BEST novella's I've ever read, and I read lots.  The ending is a touch of a hanger.  The story line of this book ends, but there is new adventures started at the end of this one.  Amanda knows how to hook her readers and make them salivate for the next.

This series is high octane.  If you love action packed, fast paced, heart thumping Urban Fantasy reads, this one NEEDS to be the TOP of your list.  ASAP!  There is even a touch of romance as a bonus.  I don't know if I've mentioned it enough in this review (sarcasm) but you need this one. ;)

Blooded (#0.5) Novella
if you would like to start earlier with Jessica, but you don't have too
Jessica McClain was born the only female in an all male race. The only problem is — she's no wolf. Called a curse, a witch and the Daughter of Evil by the superstitious wolves, Jessica decides to fight for her freedom, at age nineteen, the only way she can — in the ring.

When she's brutally attacked right after her fight, is it enough to finally earn her freedom off Compound, or will she be forced to endure the hatred even longer...

Full Blooded (#1)

Born the only female in an all male race, Jessica McClain isn’t just different—she’s feared.

After living under the radar for the last twenty-six years, Jessica is thrust unexpectedly into her first change, a full ten years late. She wakes up and finds she’s in the middle of a storm. Now that she’s become the only female full-blooded werewolf in town, the supernatural world is already clamoring to take a bite out of her and her new Pack must rise up and protect her.

But not everyone is on board. The werewolf Rights of Laws is missing text and the superstitious werewolves think that Jessica means an end to their race. It doesn’t help when Jessica begins to realize she’s more. She can change partway and hold her form, and speak directly to her wolf. But the biggest complication by far is that her alpha father can't control her like he can the rest of his wolves.

When a mercenary who’s been hired by the vampires shows up to extract information about the newly turned werewolf only days after her change, they find themselves smack in the middle of a war and there's no choice but to run together. When it’s up to Jessica to negotiate her release against her father’s direct orders, she chooses to take an offer for help instead. In exchange, Jessica must now swear an oath she may end up repaying with her life.

Hot Blooded (#2)

It hasn't been the best week for Jessica McClain.

Her mate has been kidnapped by a Goddess hell-bent on revenge --- but Jessica is playing for keeps.

Because she's the only female werewolf in town...it comes with its own set of rules...and powers.

Aided by two vamps, two loyal Pack members, and one very reluctant human, Jessica must rescue her man while coming to terms with what being a wolf really means.

All in a day's work for a girl.

The second novel in the Jessica McClain series is a full on action adventure featuring one angry Goddess and plenty of monsters, demons, and a few newly risen beasties...

Author's Favorite Scene's Urban Fantasy, Amanda Carlson

I wanted to include authors of books I've loved.  And what better way of including them then having quotes from the books?  A great way to introduce you to the books and share a bit from them.

I'm thrilled to have Amanda Carlson here to share a few of her favorite scenes as well.  Oh, her Urban Fantasy reads have taken off at a sprint and just picking up speed!  I love the action, characters, and love we find here.  Jessica is my kind of girl, and the legend that surrounds her....oh, she is something amazing!

Please welcome Amanda Carlson talking of Full Blooded and Hot Blooded:
Thanks for having me by the blog for your anniversary celebration! I'm so honored my books are included in your top reads. Four years is nothing to sneeze at, it's a big milestone. You are such a wonderful blogger, it's a treat to be a part of this!

When I think about my favorite scenes in all my books, they are usually humorous. I love to laugh. As much FULL BLOODED. When I think about him describing what happened to him in the apartment, it always cracks up. He's such a great character to write. He comes bubbling out of my mind, sometimes quicker than I can keep up with! Any scene with him always makes me smile. I hope it does for my readers as well.
as I love to kick some ass, I love to giggle until my stomach aches. One of my most favorite scenes, and one of the most fun to write, was Danny at the end of

Some of my favorite scenes in HOT BLOODED are between Jessica and Naomi. I had no idea when I started the story they would form such a tight bond. It was wonderful to see them grow together, two females figuring out their independence together. But, again, my favorite scene is one that always makes me laugh. I love Ray. I love that he pisses people off. I love that he's in your face, so naturally, I loved it when he threw a rock at Selene--and a squirrel conversation ensues. It makes me chuckle every time. I've gotten fan mail about that scene, so I know it resonated with fans as well. I hope I can keep people laughing with my books. Balanced humor is always a treat for me in any novel I read.

Thanks again for having me by the blog. Keep up the great work and here's to another four years!

*****

Now, I'm going to insert a few paragraphs to share with you these amazing scenes that Amanda mentions.

Full Blooded, at the end with Danny:
"Well, it's a very simple story actually," Danny started.  "I was minding my own business, convalescing as ordered by your father.  My wounds were quite severe, as I'm sure you were informed -- not to worry, though, all shipshape now -- when I heard someone sneaking into your apartment as bold as day.  He wasn't technically breaking in, you see, since he had his own key, but nevertheless he woke me out of a perfectly lovely sleep.  I'd been dreaming about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, who are, for the record, a naughty lot of--"

"Danny," I said sharply.  "Please stay on topic."

Hot Blooded, the awesome scene with Ray throwing a rock at Selene:
There was a scuffle and then a thunk from the other side of the room.  "Did you just hit me?" Selene's rage tumbled around the cavern, making the room quake.  "With a rock?  What do you think I am? A fucking squirrel?"

"Lady, you're no squirrel, but you certainly have some anger issues.  I heard you bellyaching from on top of the damn mountain," Ray stated evenly.

Author Interview! With Amanda Carlson

It is ALWAYS a great pleasure to have Amanda Carlson by the blog.  She has rocked the UF books with her new series, now two books and a novella strong - Jessica McClain.

Please give Amanda a strong welcome back to the blog!

M:  Amanda!  Wonderful to have you back to the blog.  You’ve got some great new exciting things happening with Jessica.  And we are completely looking forward to it!

AC:  Thanks for having me, Melissa! I always love visiting you.

M:  Hot Blooded!  And let me tell you, my blood was running hot.  I couldn’t get through the pages fast enough.

Jessica is really evolving as we go through this book.  There is more to her than even the Cain Myth we mentioned in your second interview.  Will Jessica learn all she is capable of?  Or will she always have more as there was a mention in this book that there could be?

AC:  She will definitely learn about her powers, and they will be finite, but they do adapt. I love that part about her and it gives her more range, but Jessica won’t be able to solve everything on her own. Her team is a very important part of the series. And because she’s such a new supernatural, it’s going to take her some time to figure everything out. Moving forward in COLD, it’s very clear that Jessica will need help…and she gets it from the most unlikely source (hehe, no spoilers from me!).

M:  We have formed new bonds in Hot Blooded.  I loved Naomi, and the bond that evolved between her and Jessica.  Is this going to be a strain in some areas for Jessica and help in others?

AC:  So far the only strain Jessica feels is keeping her entire team safe. Her relationship with Naomi will continue to grow and thrive. Naomi complements her in a way no one has before. Her belief in Jessica is unfaltering. I had no idea when I wrote Naomi how important she would become, but she’s a great balance for Jessica. I love their interaction.

M:  The boys are amazing!  Tyler, Jessica’s twin brother, and Danny.  Will they venture with
Jessica in Cold Blooded as well?  And maybe Nick?

AC:  Yes!

M:  The world is growing!  The Supe’s are starting to surface; along with others the wolves never expected…Demons.  We’ll be seeing more of the demons to come?  And more supernatural’s as well?

AC:  Most definitely. I had a blast coming up with some supes you don’t see very often in HOT BLOODED, which was a journey for Jessica in so many ways. It was perfectly set up for me to add some menacing beasties. In COLD she’s back in town and it’s very much back to urban, but I did sneak in a few surprises. I love having a big world. It excites me as both a reader and a writer. Why let weres and vamps have all the fun? I like to keep it interesting.

M:  Did you do a lot of research for the creatures you’ve used?  Any of the demons, the water naiads?

AC:  Yes, with most of the supes I craft, I try first to find a thread of real myth. Even the Mahrac. That myth actually comes from the Altai Mountains in Mongolia. If it’s plausible in our world, why wouldn’t it be plausible in my fictional world? The only thing I made up in HOT were the…animals, LOL. They were both Selene’s creation. Everything else was researched.

M:  We’ve learned, and still learning, the werewolf ways.  We’ve touched on vampires and demons.  Will sorcerers and witches be next?

AC:  Oh, yes. *rubs hands together* The fun is just beginning.

M:  Okay, I saved the best for last…Rourke.  Now, he’s taken and I don’t want to upset Jessica in any way, so I’ll take a step back.  What a sight we come across!  Will we ever learn in whole what he is, was?

AC:  Yes. You learn in a big way! I wouldn’t string you guys along too far. I don’t want any riots on my hands.

Thanks so much for hosting me today! It’s always such a pleasure to drop in.

M:  Thank you Amanda!  It's a pleasure to have you by.  Here's wishing you all the best in words and pages.

Looking Forward To...(117)

There are so many amazing books already on the shelves and new ones coming out.

For a list of books yet to be released I'm looking to get, you can also look on my right Sidebar at the ever growing list titled Desired Reads - just scroll down. Of course there are tones of other new books to come out that are amazing as well, but these ones are part of series I have already started or for one reason or another caught my eye (and haven't seen much on other blogs yet). But I will highlight one here each week.

(mentioned in order of Release Date then Alphabetical if there are more than one book coming out on the same date.)

It's been a while since I've done one of these Friday Looking Forward posts.  And I miss doing them.

Next Book Is...

Hot Blooded
Jessica McClain #2
By:  Amanda Carlson
Due Out:  April 23, 2013

Yes, I've read this one.  But I loved it so much, I HAVE TO HAVE a print copy for my shelves.

Goodreads Synopsis:

My Thoughts and Summary:
Jessica's been having it rough.  Supes are out to get her, attacking her at about ever turn.  And it's taking all she has to not run off to find and save Rourke, but she knows she has to be prepared and get information first.  There are rumors flying among the Supe world about her, or who she could be and what's to come - prophecies.  One Imp attacker tells her they will find her.  The demons do not want her to rule and they are hunting her.  Everyone in the supernatural world 'knows' of Jessica, except Jessica.  She's still trying to adjust to just the wolf part and so much more as it surfaces as Jessica gets her lead on the goddess who's holding Rourke and she fights her way through hell's demons to get to him.

Quick start right back into the world with Jessica.  Jessica starts right off throwing punches as she has always done all her life.  Fighting to survive.  Love the heart racing start early on, and holds to it through out.

Jessica's mind is made up and she won't let anyone stop her.  The drive is pushing her.  She will go through any and all sorts of hell to find and get Rourke, her mate, back.  Jessica is so different and learning of the supernatural world, along with herself, as she goes.  Even the world of demons, which the werewolves have never dealt with.  New beings and creatures are going to come at the top-of-the-food-chain wolves, and they are going to have to get ready for it.  With Jessica at their side.

Jessica is more powerful than she ever even imagined.  And others are taking all this in along with what they can learn from the prophecies.  Demons are surfacing, and in the end have Jessica on their short list.

Jessica makes new allies.  Ones she might be grateful to have, but also ones that might cause a stir in the werewolf world, and maybe even the supernatural world as a whole.   I really liked the new friends we come across here, and how they open up the supe world to us sharing knowledge.  Wonderful new bonds created.

We end the book with questions of a few, but the story of finding Rourke is completed here.  There are new happenings to come, and the ending sets those up to come.  Dang, can't wait for Cold Blooded!!

Constant heart-racing read, keeping the heart pounding with fevered worry and anticipation as Jessica fights for her love, friends, and her life.

*I read this book for an honest review from the author.

Cover Reveal: Cold Blooded

I'm currently reading, and looooving, Hot Blooded the second book in Amanda Carlson's Jessica McClain series.  If you haven't started this one, you should!  You are missing an amazing read.

Anyway, today we have the cover reveal of the third book ~ Cold Blooded.

I can't tell you how much I'm loving these covers!  They are staying along the same lines with the background changing to where Jessica is.  Wowza!

Are you ready?

Cold Blooded
Jessica McClain #3
By:  Amanda Carlson
Due Out:  October 2013
Description by Amanda:
Jessica arrives back in town to find her best friend missing and the most powerful witch in the country is blaming her for it. But before they can move to save her, the group is attacked.

On the run, Jessica and Rourke head to the mountains. Several surprises await them, but in order to save her father they are forced to leave for New Orleans early.

Arriving on the Vampire Queen’s doorstep unexpectedly, and bringing trouble on their heels, the Sects are thrown into an all out war. The vicious skirmish ends up forcing the vamps and Jessica to fight on the same team.

The Vamp Queen ends up owing Jessica, but what Jessica doesn’t realize is just how soon she’ll have to cash it in.

Wow!  Amanda has made the comment, Jess takes New Orleans!  And wow. I'm loving how the color goes with the 'cold' mention and the background gives a spooky feel with that house (maybe church with the crosses, or house hoping to keep something away...).  The Moon is true to Jessica with the werewolf centering.  Jessica looks as fierce as ever.  I love her!

So, have you not started this series?  Well, why not?  I'll give you links to go get it.  You won't be sorry...

You can start with this amazing Novella, Blooded: A Jessica McClain Novella, though you don't have to I would say it's probably the best I've read.
