Movie Review: Ice Pirates

Ice Pirates

Release:  1984

Rated:  PG

Genre:  Science Fiction, Comedy

Length:  91mins = 1hr 31mins

Recommendation:  Okay, I'm sharing a corky thing about myself. This is one of my Favorite movies, don't know if you'd like it as it's definitely '80's style and weak graphics.  But still makes me laugh.

Synopsis:
In the far future water is the most valuable substance.  Two space pirates are captured, sold to a princess, and recruited to help her find her father who disappeared when he found information dangerous to the rulers.  A real Space Opera with sword fights, explosions, fighting robots, monsters, bar fights and time warps.

My Thoughts and Summary:
This is a time of space travel and water is rare.  So rare only one planet produces expensive and valuable water and ships in ice form.  Space pirate Jason boards a ship to steal the ice cargo, and finds a beautiful princess sleeping.  He finally falls victim to his inner thoughts, and kidnaps her.  However, the pirate and his crew get captured and she, seeing something in him, helps him and his number one from becoming eunuchs,  then she takes charge having them help her find her father.  Her father is the man who is said to have found a distant dream planet full of water for everyone, that threatens the way of life and monopoly of water the current leaders have.

Yes, I'm going way back with this one.  Many might think I'm crazy bringing it up, many might not even know about this movie at all.  This is a humor space pirate movie done in the mid '80s.  What else can I say?  There are bad jokes and funny jokes.  There is a play on anything here.  The robots, the pest on board... a Space Herpe.  The classic relationships between the crew and the expected growth between the Princess and Captain.

I loved this movie years ago, and thanks to friends on Twitter helped me remember the name.  I ordered it through Netflix and got to watch this corny movie all over again.  And...I still love it!  My husband started watching it with me, and kept looking at me like I was insane.  Hey, I never admitted to it when he met me, and he should well know by now I am.  But, it ended up that the grass in dire need of cutting wore on his mind and half way through he went to cut the grass.  The old screen of the movie got to him.  That's okay, I got to enjoy an old favorite of mine in peace.

As much as I enjoy this whole movie, I love the end the best.  When they hit the time warp.  All happens here; they are attacked, unknown people make a surprising appearance, and more.  It's fun....for me anyway.
