Publish Date: December 31, 2011
Format: eBook, 266pgs
Genre: Fantasy
Series: 2nd in Dragonslayer Series; 1st Book ~ The Dragonslayer's Sword
Recommendation: Definitely, great follow up to an enthralling world, keeping you curious about the dragons and dragonslayers.
Synopsis:
Astrid is reluctant to travel the winter route beyond the Northlands, even though it's her duty. She'd rather stay home in her village, surrounded by friends and neighbors. Ignoring the bonds of tradition, she decides to spend the cold winter months in the warmth of her blacksmithing shop. Why should she leave the comfort of her cottage to serve the protect foreigners who might raid and harm her native Northlands?
Everything changes when a traveling merchant steals Starlight, the first dragonslayer's sword Astrid forged and her last link to her sweetheart DiStephan. Having no time to alert her friends, Astrid races in pursuit of the merchant, determined to reclaim Starlight as her own and return home in time for dinner. Instead, her quest leads her to new lands, unexpected friendships with foreigners, and a harrowing encounter with the damage done by the followers of a new god that considers women as nothing more than servants to men. All the while, she must be ready to face any dragon traveling the winter route.
In Book 2 of the Dragonslayer series, Astrid must learn that deciding who she is isn't a decision she can make just once. Instead, it's a decision she must make every day.

Don't move, Astrid told herself.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Astrid's been a dragonslayer only for a few months, but thanks to DiStephan's ghost she's learning and knows much of what to do. Astrid's making her rounds through the area as the lizards migrate south this time of year, and looking forward to a relaxing winter by her anvil pounding metal. Taddeo, a true dragon, visits Astrid telling her where to go, on the dragonslayer winter route, in order to restore her arm - the ghost arm that only those eating lizard blood and meat can see and she believes in. Finding late hatching lizard eggs, Astrid decides to do the one thing against what dragonslayers are to do, she keeps them. Once she's back to Guell and settling in, a merchant arrives looking for the current dragonslayer since DiStephan is dead. He claims to have always traveled with DiStephan south in safe passage. Astrid refused to go and wakes the next morning to find her first made dragonslaying sword that belong to her deceased lover and her only connection to him, Starlight, has been stolen. When she catches up to the thief, she finds she needs to travel on as someone forcefully took it from him as well. Astrid finds herself unknowingly following the Dragonslayer southern route for the winter.
Start right off with Astrid fighting with a lizard and seeing how smart they are. Early on in the book we have mentions of DiStephan and I remember the heartache I felt in the first book. Yet by the end of the book I'm not as heartbroken over DiStephan, and have hopes of more with Astrid.
This seems to be a journey of much more than wandering the country side for Astrid. She is on a journey learning more about herself and others that she would protect. She grows to learn who she is and what she is to do, either a blacksmith or a dragonslayer. Astrid has some guilty feelings for the losses she willingly let happen in Dragonslayer's Sword, but they were bad and need to happen for the world. Astrid makes a new friend and we see a journey of a woman who was abused, not knowingly, and raising to more in herself to find more in life which she lost long ago.
We get to see Norah, the young scared dragon again. Taddeo sends Norah to follow Astrid's scent to the dragonwell with the dragon set free from the long prison of stone. To drink from this well the dragon will heal in any way they are hurt or harmed. We get much more of Norah here. Getting to know Norah along with Astrid. She is such a scared girl, dragon, after the torment she lived yet has a good heart. Even the things she did to Astrid as a kid, cruel, were done with her good heart in mind. You have to read to understand that. I liked seeing Norah grow as a character as well. She is finding herself through her own journey as well.
We travel through the land in this story, spending time with new characters; Margreet, Gershon, and Vinchi. We watch the world unfold a touch more with mentions of the attacks by the Krystr (from first book) on people and much more.
We learn a touch more with the real dragons here. There is an unknown mysterious bond between dragon and dragonslayer. One created in a promise from long ago, now relating to Astrid and Norah. I'm liking this and want to know more about it and the history here.
I'm thinking the Krystr will come more into play in the future books along with the dragon link and real dragon existence. There are even the lizards that Astrid kept, I hope to see them again in the future. So much learned here in this book, yet so much I look forward to learning.
This series has captured my attention with the magic of the lizards and dragons and having grown more in the connection with the slayers. I've enjoyed reading this world created and do look forward to the next two books.

Throwback Thursday (99)
I found this picture of Trinity College Library, and thought it would work for this meme with a little play with lighting and adding the words.
Let's talk about those books already on the shelves, yours or the stores.
I have a post for books I'm looking forward to coming out;
Looking Forward To...
But what about all those wonderful books that are ALREADY on the shelves.
Whether it be on your shelf waiting to be read or on the shelves in the stores waiting for you to give it a good home.
So, I thought I would share a book a week that is just waiting for me to travel through it's world.
Now... where do I start? Lets go by Published Date on the books...
This Week:
I love my fantasy and dragons. So this book sounded right up my alley. And it was free in ebook as well! So had to get it. Now to get to reading it...
Goodreads Synopsis:
When two young men go on a hunt that they know will be the last hunt of their youth, they decide they want it to be an unforgettable outing. When they cross a ridge leaving the protection of their kingdom behind, they find a cavern that looks like it needs to be explored. In the cavern they find exactly what they were looking for. In this stoney hole lives something they will never forget!
I've heard back from a few bloggers that they would like to join in this meme post, so I'm adding a Linky for you to join in. Grab the picture above, and join in. All I ask, is if you can acknowledge my blog in the post so others know where to come back to and join as well. Thank you.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.
his is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )
This Week:
I've only read the first sentence as the kid just finished with this one last night. So I'm reading to review with him. He really enjoyed it!

Book Review: Red
Red
By: Kate SeRine
Publisher: Kensington Publishing Corp.
Publish Date: August 2, 2012
Format: eBook, 310pgs
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Series: 1st in A Transplanted Tales Novel series
Recommendation: Oh YES!! A modernization of fairytale characters with not so perfect lives as thought in their stories and a bloody mystery to solve, and maybe even a blooming relationship along the way.
Book Synopsis:
"My name is Tess Little. But everyone calls me Red."
Once upon a time, a spell went awry, stranding Make Believe characters in the ordinary world. Since then, Tess "Red" Little - a/k/a Little Red Riding Hood - has worked as an Enforcer for the Chicago branch of the Fairytale Management Authority. But, consider yourself warned - she's not just some waif with a basket of goodies. All grown up and with nothing to lose, a gun and combat boots is more her style. And Red's new assignment threatens to be short on happily ever afters...
Someone is murdering transplanted Tales in gruesome fashion. The list of fictional characters capable of such grisly acts in short and includes more than one of Red's old flames. And if that wasn't bad enough, there's another complication, in the for of sexy, enigmatic Nate Grimm, the FMA's lead detective and part-time Reaper. Used to following her own rules and living life on the edge, Red has managed to avoid taking on a partner until now. But Nate's dark side makes him perfect for a case like this. That is, if she can trust him. Because if there's one thing Red knows for sure, it's that believing in the wrong person can have big, bad consequences...
First Sentence:
What do you get when you cross an egomaniacal fairy godmother, an arrogant genie, and a couple of wandering plagiarists whose idea of cultural preservation is stealing the stories of unsuspecting villagers and passing them off as their own?
Purchase At:
My Thoughts and Summary:
Tess Little's, know as Red, recent mark to bring in Dave "Pied Piper" is a usual occurrence of minor parole violation turns surprising and doesn't make sense when he quickly takes his own life in front of her instead of going in. Something had him sacred and doesn't feel right. When Detective Nate Grimm shows Red is stunned by her response to him, then she's called back to the office at FMA - Fairytale Management Authority. Red learns there have been four severely brutal murders in the last thirty days and appears all by same person. They all seem to be four small time Tale characters, no one knows why these people were clawed to death. Red's boss, Al Addin, wants Red to bring the suspects in for questioning including Seth "Big Bad" Wolf whom Red thought was her happily ever after at one time and a few others whom she had relations with in the past. Al wants this over before the Ordinaries, humans, catch wind of the murders. Red believes down deep none of the suspects are guilty, especially the top of their list - Seth. Red's not wanting to deal with any old lovers, which is complicated by her growing attraction to the detective who requested her as his partner - Detective Nate Grimm.
I love the Prologue! We learn of the fairytale characters being in the Here and Now and a brief reasoning as to why they have crossed over. It's told from Tess Little, Red as everyone calls her. Red is grown up and one tough lady as an Enforcer for the Fairytale Management Authority. I really like Red off the bat. She seems like a no nonsense kind of woman, one who holds her own. Red has grown and made a life for herself, yet she's still hurt too, in her heart. And she's dated a few...damaged Tale men as well. Red is use to working alone and now she has a partner, this is hard for her to adjust to.
I really felt like many of the Tale characters and their Here and Now lives blended. Some I was surprised to see in their positions, but being in the "real" life scenario they are not who they were in their stories and lives are way different here.
I so enjoyed Nate Grimm, a Homicide detective with his special talent to know when one of the fairy tales die and instantly there. Oooo Nate! Oh do I LOVE Nate's story. What we learn about him through the story. *sigh* In the end I do think I loved him, well, I strongly liked him in the beginning. Not only is Nate an amazing sounding man, but I loved the way his story fit with Red, her life, and into the story. Wonderfully planned!
I kept reading as I wanted to know who committed the murders of these background characters and why. I love Red's determined hard self and the banter with her and Nate... love/hate/love, friend, more? And to meet all these troubled "bad boys" Red has dated. We follow Red learning all the clues along with her, and kept me guessing. I had my suspicions and there were surprises that fit PERFECTLY with the clues we got. A mystery story that will keep you flipping and guessing.
This is a modernization of fairytale characters with a bloody mystery to solve and it seems to touch Red's personal life.
If you haven't picked this up yet because you fear to much Romance, GO GET IT! There is an enticing murder story here. And wonderful molding of Fairytale characters in the ordinary world. There is falling in love present but not over the top here. There is a perfect combination with the growth of the relationship done gently through the story making it believable as you watch the characters work together through these grisly murders.
I am sold on this series! I will be picking up the next books that will be coming out to enjoy more of this world and to see what is in store for the characters.
**I read this book for my own enjoyment.

Monday's Beginnings (176)
Well, it's Monday....and I'm late with the post. *sigh*
I've been busy, relaxing. After two months of crazy with holidays and starting the new year with a funeral I wanted a weekend were I did nothing. Well, I cleaned, but did nothing most of the other time. I did finish watching Firefly, three episodes that were unaired, and Serenity. Now, I'm on the race to find the graphic novels in this world as well. I know there's not many, but, well, I'm hooked. Thank you all for turning me on to a series that was canceled way before it's time! *I'm being sarcastic* ;P I did get a huge chunk of the current beta read done too. Wow.
I will be picking up, hopefully this week, Outpost by Ann Aguirre. I wanted to read this one at the same time as my son but he's held tight to this one. So I'll read it when he's done and hope we will review it together here. I asked him to, and he agreed to. But then I HAVE TO get to review books. I've been bad over the holidays and have several here stacked up that need read, and I want to read.
Then, there is that work on rewriting my latest Nano project...which I've neglected lately. I need to make time to do this. I think I came up with a better way of taking notes and such so I know what I want to think about, look for, and touch on in the future. I bought another notebook for just this, and I've got lots of sticky notes at hand. ;)

Still Beta reading. I'm slow, but I'm taking my time. :)

Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep
Goodreads Synopsis:
My name is Gwen Frost, and I go to Mythos Academy; a school of myths, magic and warrior whiz kids, where even the lowliest geek knows how to chop off somebody's head with a sword and Logan Quinn, the hottest Spartan guy in school, also happens to be the deadliest. But lately, things have been weird, even for Mythos. First, mean girl Jasmine Ashton was murdered in the Library of Antiquities. Then, someone stole the Bowl of Tears, a magical artifact that can be used to bring about the second Chaos War. You know, death, destruction and lots of other bad, bad things. Freaky stuff like this goes on all the time at Mythos, but I'm determined to find out who killed Jasmine and why; especially since I should have been the one who died...
Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep
Goodreads Synopsis:
I've seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I'm supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I'm just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me again. Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I'm also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me? It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can't use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me and I'm in for the fight of my life.
God Save the Queen by Kate Locke
Goodreads Synopsis:
Queen Victoria rules with an immortal fist.
The undead matriarch of a Britain where the Aristocracy is made up of werewolves and vampires, where goblins live underground and mothers know better than to let their children out after dark. A world where being nobility means being infected with the Plague (side-effects include undeath), Hysteria is the popular affliction of the day, and leeches are considered a delicacy. And a world where technology lives side by side with magic. The year is 2012 and Pax Britannia still reigns.
Xandra Vardan is a member of the elite Royal Guard, and it is her duty to protect the Aristocracy. But when her sister goes missing, Xandra will set out on a path that undermines everything she believed in and uncover a conspiracy that threatens to topple the empire. And she is the key-the prize in a very dangerous struggle.
I bought this one for my brother for his birthday coming up, plus I know he wants it after Balticon last year.
Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan
Goodreads Synopsis:
Royce Melborn, a skilled thief, and his mercenary partner, Hadrian Blackwater, make a profitable living carrying out dangerous assignments for conspiring nobles-until they are hired to pilfer a famed sword. What appears to be just a simple job finds them framed for the murder of the king and trapped in a conspiracy that uncovers a plot far greater than the mere overthrow of a tiny kingdom.
Can a self-serving thief and an idealistic swordsman survive long enough to unravel the first part of an ancient mystery that has toppled kings and destroyed empires?
And so begins the first tale of treachery and adventure, sword fighting and magic, myth and legend.
When author Michael J. Sullivan self-published the first books of his Riyria Revelations, they rapidly became ebook bestsellers. Now, Orbit is pleased to present the complete series for the first time in bookstores everywhere.
Theft of Swords was originally published as: The Crown Conspiracy andAvempartha.

2012 Challenge Wrap-up
I did not do a Flash Fiction Friday. I'm hoping to get to do these. We'll see what time brings this year with trying to do rewrites and such.
My WANT List...It looks like I've added 7. Well, that's a step in the right direction...or maybe wrong, *sigh* I want so many, and have to get to the series I've already been reading too! Oh, books.
Received Last Week:
Purchased:
So, I won the 4th book in this series, and needed to get the first 3. I only found book 1 & 3, still need to get 2. I've been wanting these, and really look forward to reading them!

YA Speculative Fiction Challenge 2012 CloseOut
So, 2013 is over and time to man up with the challenges I took on for the year... um, yeah, something like that.
I finished out the Goodreads Reading Challenge in 2012 with bumping the number up slightly a twice! Yes Twice! AND I still surpassed the number. I read more than I had thought I would. Now do keep in mind that this number includes novella's too.
I was hoping to get to many more YA reads in 2012, but this isn't tooooo bad... It was more than I read in 2011.
With only 14 YA reads I fall in the YA Fledgling category. lol.
Now, the A to Z Challenge was a challenge for me. I can't believe how many book titles actually start with the same letters! Good think they aren't shelved that way on the book shelves. ;) And I struggled with a few basic letters I thought would be easy. This was an interesting view for me.
I fell in Alphabet Soup category with getting through 18 letters. ;)
I also joined in Book Chick City's Horror and UF Reading Challenge for 2012. Not bad at all.
I also have Debut Authors challenge for 2012. I was to do 1 a month...I kinda failed at this one. But LOVED the new authors I did find.
So that's the challenges...I didn't do terrible, but didn't hit the numbers I was hoping for. Now to start off with a clean slate for 2013. I'm not joining any reading challenges as I've got other things in mind to do this year.

I read 99 of 95 books!
