Looking Forward To... (135)

There are so many amazing books already on the shelves and new ones coming out.

For a list of books yet to be released I'm looking to get, you can also look on my right Sidebar at the ever growing list titled Desired Reads - just scroll down. Of course there are tones of other new books to come out that are amazing as well, but these ones are part of series I have already started or for one reason or another caught my eye (and haven't seen much on other blogs yet). But I will highlight one here each week.

(mentioned in order of Release Date then Alphabetical if there are more than one book coming out on the same date.)

It's been a while since I've done one of these Friday Looking Forward posts.  And I miss doing them.

Next Book Is...

Horde
Razorland #3
Edited By:  Ann Aguirre
Due Out:  October 29, 2013

My son and I have been reading this trilogy, and loving it. I look forward to the final book coming to us soon.

Goodreads Synopsis:
The epic conclusion to the USA Today bestselling trilogy.

The horde is coming.

Salvation is surrounded, monsters at the gates, and this time, they're not going away. When Deuce, Fade, Stalker and Tegan set out, the odds are against them. But the odds have been stacked against Deuce from the moment she was born. She might not be a Huntress anymore, but she doesn't run. With her knives in hand and her companions at her side, she will not falter, whether fighting for her life or Fade's love.

Ahead, the battle of a lifetime awaits. Freaks are everywhere, attacking settlements, setting up scouts, perimeters, and patrols. There hasn't been a war like this in centuries, and humans have forgotten how to stand and fight. Unless Deuce can lead them.

This time, however, more than the fate of a single enclave or outpost hangs in the balance. This time, Deuce carries the banner for the survival of all humanity.

Book Review: Outpost

Outpost

By:  Ann Aguirre

Publisher:  Feiwel & Friends

Publish Date:  September 4, 2013

Format:  Hardback, 317pgs

Genre:  YA Fantasy, Dystopia

Series:  2nd in Razorland series; 1st Book ~ Enclave

Recommendation:  Definitely!  You read Enclave, you'll want to continue!

Synopsis:
Deuce's whole world has changed since readers first met her in Enclave.

Now living topside in a community called Salvation, she has a new set of problems.  Down below, she was considered an adult and she contributed to the enclave.  Now above ground, she's viewed as a brat in need of training by the people of Salvation.  She doesn't fit in with the other girls: She hates cooking, sewing, and school.  Deuce only knows how to fight.

To make matters worse, her Hunter partner, Fade, keeps Deuce at a distance.  Her feelings for Fade haven't changed, but he seems not to want her around anymore.  Confused and lonely, she starts looking for a way out.

Deuce pursues a chance to serve in the summer patrols -- those responsible for making sure the growers and planters can work the fields without danger of Freak attack.  It should be routine, but things have been changing on the surface, just as they did below ground.  The Freaks are smarter.  They're watching.  Waiting.  Planning.  The monsters don't intend to let Salvation survive, and it may take a girl like Deuce to turn the tide.

First Sentence:
I woke to the cold kiss of steel on my throat.

Purchase At:

My Thoughts and Summary:
Deuce, Fade, Stalker, and Tegan have been in Salvation for two months now.  Deuce trains at night with Stalker, Fade's been keeping his distance, and Tegan is healing and fitting in wonderfully like the others.  Deuce is...struggling with the new ways above ground here in this fort city.  Growing season is close and Deuce wants to help in the only way she knows, as a Huntress.  She earns respect by displaying her strength, but others don't agree with the change in roles for a female.  When the crops are ruined by Freaks, Deuce suggests an Outpost to watch over them, and her friends along with Longshot stand up with her.  What Deuce, Fade, and Stalker learn out here of the Freaks will be astounding and frightening.

I asked my son, who read this book at the same time as me, to share in reviewing.  His answers are short as he's afraid to spoil anything to come and being thirteen not sure the way to twist the words yet.

(M = Me, K = Kiddo, my 13 yr old son who's new to this reviewing thing)

The Setting….
M:  Where do we start?  We start in a fort town, then move to the Outpost watching over the fields.  Did you like the setting?

K:  Yes.  It was different from the first one because the first one was underground and this one is above ground in a fort.

M:  Yes, gives you a whole different view of the world.

The Freaks…
K:  They are getting smarter!  But some people are too scared to realize it.  Scared of the freaks and sit behind the fighters to deal with it.

M:  You predicted this in the first review!  There is a lot more to them than we suspected.  I can’t wait to learn the whole story and see what comes of the Freaks.  What about you?

K:  I think they’ll get smarter again.  I think they will act like normal people do.  And see more of them, they are the point of the story.

M:  The Freaks bring a whole new dynamic to the story.

The Characters….
M:  We have Deuce, who’s struggling here with being in a whole new atmosphere and living arrangements than she’s use to.

K:  She wants to fight freaks because that’s all she knows.

M:  Yep, and she finds a way to keep to her believes.

K:  Uhhh, somewhat.

M:  Why do you say that?

K:  Because she still has to do other stuff, like her person she’s living with gives her a dress and she has to wear it.  She does have to act like a girl sometimes.

M:  Ah, yes, her character is evolving with the atmosphere she’s in.  The lovely lady that takes her in, like a mom.   And learns the difference between boys and girls.

We have Fade!  Poor Fade…. Now no spoilers! About him.

K:  He’s quiet and doesn’t do much.

M:  But he fits in better than she does.

K:  Because he’s quiet.

M:  This is his element, he came from topside.  But he struggles too.  We can’t say too much about Fade in or out of town.  But him and Deuce find new ground between them…

M:  We still have Tegan and Stalker too.  They seem to fitting in rather well.

The Feeling while reading….
K:  Surprised for some things.  Like when Fade got captured and his reaction to it.

M:  Yes.  I agree.  I was afraid knowing what Deuce and company knows of the freaks, I had a feeling of trapped in Salvation because it was fort.  I liked when they went out to the Outpost.  We really started to learn more about the Freaks there.

What about the relationships of the main company?

K:  They change.

M:  Good or bad?

K:  Both.

M:  Lol, okay we wont spoil for anyone and go on with that topic.

The End…
M:  I know you have strong feelings about this ending.  Want to share?

K:  Not surprised because I knew it was going to happen.  But it was different.  The book hints at it coming.

M:  I remember when you finished this book.  You came right to me, handed over the book, and said, “There’s going to be another.”  Giving me a strong look.  It was kind of a cliff hanger ending, do you think?

K:  Sure.

M:  The ending leads you into wanting the next book.  I can’t wait to get it.  Are you looking forward to it?

K:  Yes.  I do want to know.

M:  Would you suggest this book?

K:  Yes.  Rate it a 7-7.5 out of 10.  (I’m a tough rate.)

M:  I would have to agree with you.

**We read this book for our own enjoyment.

This Week:

I'm half way through and seeing why the kid enjoyed reading this one.  I don't want to stop!

I'm with Deuce and several guard.  We are at the outpost and a freak (those humanoid creatures that are thought to mindless meat eaters) made it's way through camp doing something rather strange, and it's not sitting well in my mind or Deuces.

Yes, this one has released already.  But I'm still looking forward to it. :) See I ordered it online on release day as it was on sale at Barnes and Nobles online and not in the store.  So, I'm waiting for this lovely package to show up on my doorstep, and the kid to get done with his current book read (for AR reading test) to get to this one.  He read the first one at the same time as I and we reviewed it together.  He really enjoyed it, as did I.  And I enjoyed that time together, for just a few minutes we had something in common to really chat about.  Was very nice.  (now keep in mind he was 12 when we reviewed the book)

Oh, I loved the first book with my kid.  It was the first book we read together (other than as a little kid where I read to him) and we enjoyed.  We talked about it and he really seemed to have a wonderful take and feel for the story.  I'm hoping he'll do the same with me on this one.  Maybe if I tell him how everyone enjoyed his review with me on Enclave, he'll be willing to do the same this time...

Book Review: Enclave

Enclave

By:  Ann Aguirre

Publisher:  Feiwel and Friends, An Imprint of Macmillan

Publish Date:  April 2011

Format:  Hardcover 259pgs

Genre:  YA Dystopian

Series:  1st book in Razorland series

Recommendation:  B (my boy):  Yes,for teens & Young Adults who like books with action and fighting and exploring a destroyed world.  M (me):  Yes!  Keeps you on your toes wondering what will happen next with action leading the way and discovering our world so long in the future.

Book Synopsis:
In Deuce's world, an enclave deep underground, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years.  By that point, each unnamed "brat" has trained to join one of three groups - Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms.  Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress her purpose is clear - to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading the ferocious monsters known as Freaks.  She's worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing is going to stop her, not even a brooding Hunter named Fade.  When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce's troubles are just beginning.

Fade doesn't like following orders.  Deuce has never known a boy like him before, someone as likely to touch her gently as use his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce's perception shifts, so does the balance in the battle for survival.  The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat due to their sheer numbers, now show signs of cunning and even strategy... but the elders refuse to heed any warnings.  No matter how hard she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she's ever known.

First Sentence:
I was born during the second holocaust.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Deuce got her name and her three scars, signifying she is a Huntress, in her Enclave.  She is the one to protect and feed them.  The Enclave, a home in the tunnels underground where children don't always make it and no one lives to 40.  The rules are strict and harsh for a reason, to survive.  Deuce is paired with Fade a Hunter slightly older than her, the one found outside the enclave yet taken in as he's strong.  Fade has troubles following the rules.  But when Deuce and Fade notice something different with the Freaks, the flesh eating humanoid monsters hunting people, and adjust to save themselves and others it brings heartache and more with it.  Deuce and Fade find themselves trying to survive in places unknown to them, above ground.

As many of you know I read this book with my son.  So I sat with him and talked about a few things in and of the book.  But do keep in mind he is 12 years old, so the thoughts might be a little rough around the edges, but I was rather proud of his thoughts.  Here are a few of his thoughts as we talked....

This is a dystopian setting...
B – How many people are actually alive? I wouldn’t think many. Because most of the enclaves seem to be dying off because of sickness and the freaks are getting smarter and no way to find ways around them to protect themselves {the people in the Enclaves}. There may not be many people around in the city and area we started in, above and below ground, but how many are actually alive out of the area?

M – Something big happened to break up the population of people and cause everyone to go different ways to survive. I think the separation of the towns people live in along with sickness has limited people and gives us a feel of smaller living towns and not as many people. I’m curious to hear in the future books what had happened in the world to bring these ways of living on. And how many people are really left!

Let’s talk about the Freaks…
M – Where do they come from? This is one question we still are curious about. But they are very dangerous to EVERYONE, above & below ground.

B – They are getting much smarter and I’m surprised they aren’t learning more things humans know. Like weapons.

M – Did you like the Freaks?

B – I didn’t exactly like them but they made the story and without the Freaks there would be no real story. I thought they were like people that where contaminated by something and changed.

M – They really aren't the ones made to be likable that's for sure.  To me they had a “zombie” feel but were not zombies. They grew smarter. Like a rabid animalized person. They are definitely a great way of putting the evil feel out there and the scare of not knowing when we’ll bump into them again.

The Characters…
M – The main characters are a girl, Deuce, and a boy, Fade. What do you think of this book from a boys view being mostly from a girl’s mind?

B – I do think the girls the main character. The book was not girly. It had things a guy could like, like fighting and action. She was a Huntress.

M - I liked Deuce as she was a character that grew from knowing the rules, yet was curious and smart enough to know things weren’t always right and took the steps to do right, no matter what happened to her.

M – What about Fade? What did you think of him?

B – People misunderstand him. He was a nice guy. I don’t think they really wanted to know him because they were scared of him. Because he was a top hunter and no one really talked to him so they didn’t know who he was because he was an outsider.

M – I liked Fade. He was kind of a wild card in actions and what he knew. Did you like him? Was he your favorite?

B – Yeah I liked him. He tied with Deuce.

The feeling while reading…
M - I was always worried in this dangerous would wondering what would show up or where the Freaks were. Worried for Deuce & Fade that they wouldn’t make it.

B - It kept me on my toes. Wondering why things were happening.

M - Did you get your answers?

B - Some of them yes, some no. Just a few things that were barely talked about in the Enclave, that we may not ever find out about.

The End…
M – I felt the story ended, but there was still a feel that there was more to come. Something wasn’t completely finished for me, leaving me wanting another book. Not a cliffhanger, but wanting more stories here. What about you?

B – I felt like the freak attacks were just beginning and I have a feeling if the author does make another book the Freaks will be back stronger and smarter with a larger population.

M – Do you want another book?

B - Yeah, I want another book!

I have to say in the end my son enjoyed this process of reviewing the book and thought it was a good way to prepare for his test.  I was glad to hear that.  And thought moments were a little hard as he wasn't making any sense, it turned out rather well.  He had moments where he kept going on and I just couldn't share those here as they would have been spoilerish, but he really seemed to enjoy this one.  I think he did a wonderful job!

This review qualifies for Speculative Fiction Reading Challenge hosted by Floor to Ceiling Books and YA Reading Challenge.

I read this book for my own enjoyment.

By:  Ann Aguirre
Due Out:  April 12, 2011

Well, Ann Aguirre is one author I have enjoyed reading.  I've only read the Corine Solomon series and loved it thus far.  I can so see this series being made into movies, and loving them!  Which is hard as usually the books turned movie don't turn out well, but if these are done to follow suit with the books they would be amazing.  Now, so many amazing things have been flying around about her Jax series... which I DO NEED to get to.

But, this is a new series to dive into with Ann...

Goodreads Synopsis:
WELCOME TO THE APOCALYPSE

In Deuce's world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed 'brat' has trained into one of three groups-Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms.

Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember. As a Huntress, her purpose is clear--to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She's worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing's going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade.

When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce's troubles are just beginning. Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn't like following orders. At first she thinks he's crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don't always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth.

Her partner confuses her; she's never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as to using his knives with feral grace. As Deuce's perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy... but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she's ever known.
