This book was a good one for me to get a taste of Steampunk I've been missing.

If you're looking for romance, this book is very, very light on romance. The potential pair hardly spend time together. I know the time period set here has limits, but she works more with his friend than with the love interest. They get glimpses of each other and have a few starts to solid conversations to get to know each other, but it's limited.

I like that there's a steampunk element in the world for how things work and function. The world is something I enjoy. There's also a connection to history, which brings us to what the mission is for the expedition the crew goes on. There's hints in history that will help stabilize Aether and be cheaper to use as energy.

There's a science to the way things work and that's something that's talked about. At times when we learn about connections that draw us to different places and a device I did listen to the areas twice so I didn't miss anything.

There's an interesting "magical" aspect to what Iris can retrieve from artifacts. And Marie has me curious as to what she can do as well.

The group end up working together and becoming a group of friends to help each other.

This series has been a fun, easy listen for me.

I did listen to books 2 through 5 one after the other. The storyline has kept moving forward with each book picking up shortly after the previous one.

This whole series as been about Morgen finding herself. She inherits her grandmother's home and learns so much about herself in the process of figuring out who her grandmother was too. She really needed to experience life differently after losing her job and her husband divorcing her. And, this is a lot different from "normal" life styles.

This book is about Morgen finding a way to earn money with her new found gifts of being a witch. However there's still an "enemy" out there after Morgen. Along with Morgen's building for her business being haunted or cursed, or both?

We get to see a conclusion with the pack rivalry in this book. And a few people in town who aren't fans of Morgen's...we'll see something come of them too. But what about Olivia? That woman is a problem. Is that really solved here? Mmm.

But the way life goes for Morgen, I'm happy with where she ends up. She seems happy here at her grandmother's old home, now her home. This is her place to be. She has quirky friends and so much more.

This series is just a quick, fun listen for me. This book has an enemy from the past of Amar's that shows up. As Morgen and Amar figure out their relationship, Morgen's determined to help Amar with this terrible foe.

This book is Morgen and Amar trying to find time together. There's a lot happening at the house, remodeling being done the wolves arrive with news of searching for Amar's enemy and the witches now looking to hold meetings at her home. So finding private time is a bit difficult.

All the stumble blocks do give Morgen to meet others and make more friends, or to be friends, with some of the witches. And her hot tub is an attraction for the pack and even witches.

Morgen's sister comes to stay for a time! Sian is a little more quirky then Morgen. She has her set ways and it's hard to divert from them. But Sian finds a friend in the local vet.

Morgen learns more about her grandmothers land, now her land. There's a secret that she feels will help with the enemy that's hunting Amar and the pack. (I have a feeling there's lots of secrets with this land that Morgen hasn't found yet.)

Nice story of coming together and moving forward. But we also have a new struggle for Morgen. The property taxes. That's touched on here and will be something she'll have to figure out how to pay, in the near future.

I listened to the audiobook on this one as well. The narrator is clear and clean, but I still had to speed it up so the characters didn't feel like they were dragging in talking. Also, Amar sounded better with the speed and he's speaking a lot more.

The witches in this town have some serious problems. There are a few hard topics approached in this story. Things that the witches are doing. I wouldn't have thought they'd go there, but there's always those that are trouble.

Okay, maybe only a few. But the others have lent their ear to those that they shouldn't. And the things they are doing. Dang. I can totally see why the werewolves don't like the witches.

Everything that's come to light in this book about the few witches that are not following the way of witches, I'm totally on Morgen's side with the talismans she's making. Though, I was on her side before all that we learned here. No one should be able to control anyone.

A few that are bad can always make things worse for the whole. That's so true of many things. I'm hoping that's being weeded out here.

I love the pack that Amar was from. They are a hoot and the work they do! lol. They really go out of their way.

This was nice to see Morgen start to make friends. We have Wendy, Phoebe, and her sister's invited to stay for a time with her. That's interesting to see them interact. And, her sister has some spunk. Amar and Morgen are starting to figure out what they want in their relationship too. Which that brings some bumps along the way, with her being a witch and he a werewolf and how the groups don't get along.

Morgen does the spell to find a familiar. Love her familiar(s). Her personality attracts the perfect ones. lol

I listened to this book. I was struggling after the last book with how Amar is voiced. He sounds like he's lacking in smarts. And he's not. This book has him sounding a little better however I did speed up the time and he sounds better that way. I'm working to get over this. Otherwise the narration is clear, I just need it at a faster speed for the people to sound normal. (I don't usually speed up to hear and catch things. This narrator needs it.)

I needed a book that was light and fun today. This book fit that need perfectly.

I enjoy Lindsay's books as the main female characters are older than 20, independent, and snarky. Morgen, in this book, fits this all and has a great dry sense of humor. She's a little geeky too. Perfect for me. Her interactions with Amar have grown. Amar is picking up on her humor and his dry humor is coming out in this book. Their clips back and forth are fun. I've smiled at them as I was listening to the book.

I really liked that in this book Amar, the werewolf, is starting to see that Morgen, a witch, is not like other witches. She's not going to spell the werewolves like the witches do, and has no desire to control anyone. It's nice when others start to see who you are as a person other than classifying you.

Morgen is definitely making enemies of the witches though. They started seeing her as they wanted to see her. And now, there is something she's done that helps a friend but will alienate her from the witch coven. However, there maybe two friends that come out of the mess in the end. We'll have to see if that stays as such in the next book.

Morgen still has a few needs. A way to make money to pay for things along with learning more about witch things. But, it seems like Morgen has a pack of friends growing. And maybe more with one other.

I listened to this book and enjoyed the narrator. Her audio is clean and clear. I'll be listening to the next book as well. And the series.

Crafty play with Roll Playing rules in this story.

I really liked the play with words and creating the ephemeral theme. Ever changing. This would be something interesting to try to play out as a character. And with it being a story, it's all a strange shock to the main character, Tim.

Tim doesn't have any friends in the world he just woke in. Making friends can be a little complicated if you look different today as you did yesterday. This is what he rolled, ephemeral, and he's trying to make his way in the world with it.

Tim's at the center of what's happening. For the good or for the bad? I'm not sure. I bounce back and forth depending on the god we see interact with Tim. He's over powered yet has so much to learn. The events in this book are getting Tim ready for what's to come. So what's to come?

There's more going on in the world. With the gods and rulers. They haven't told Tim yet, but we see it in the Prologue and Epilogue. I'll be listening to the next books as this is a fun idea and I'm curious as to what's happening that we aren't seeing, yet.

We start right into the story. This sounded like a story that would be one I'd really enjoy. With the plot and the world. But... I didn't feel an attachment to Nim. I'm not for or against what she does. I was just listening.

The story idea is a great one. One that I'd love, and do love. But the writing doesn't feel my style.

It felt that the big moments and reveals were mentioned quick and then moved on from. I would have liked more feelings from Nim, physical descriptions with them and drawing the world more with them.

There's a romance, that I think could work. An enemies to lovers, but it fell short for me. I know Nim's attracted to magic but there wasn't much in way of getting to know each other to bring them together.

Overall, this felt like a well written draft that could be fleshed out a little more.

I'm sorry to say the story fell flat for me.

This book started right into action. I really liked this, though I thought the book was going to go another direction with this beginning. And we ended up somewhere else. So I hope these people we meet at the beginning will return (likely since we met them) in the future.

I love the interaction Jade has with everyone. We have our returning friends, Scarlett, Kett, Kandy, Desmond, and Gran. Along with a few others. ;) And we have a new face that I'm surprised at how she interacts with Jade. I actually love it because they both need someone who understands where they are emotionally at this time. (I'm going to reference the ending of book 1 here so you know, but if you haven't read, you don't get a spoiler.)

There's more going on with that debt bond....and will there be troubles with others? Oh this is interesting.

THE ENDING!! Gaaaaaaahh! Really!?!?! Why do this to me? Us? lol. I'm just so so glad that the next book is available because I am diving in as soon as I'm done typing this up. I knew there was something big with Jade's father. I did not think that. I loooooooove this! But, how we end. What about everyone?!?!

These books flow nicely in the writing and events. However, there was a distraction that I didn't understand happening. It didn't seem to fit for me. And then later everyone wants Jade to do something though she really doesn't want to. Then she finally decides to go. I didn't care for everyone fluffing her thoughts off here. Jade usually stands up for herself, but in these moments she isn't heard by others. I'm hoping others will start to listen to her more as she learns more about her magic in time.

Okay. Off to book 3. Because of reasons. (When you get here, you'll understand. So have book 3 sitting there waiting for you.)

This was an urban fantasy read I really enjoyed. It has it's own personality, with the cupcake shop Jade (our main Female character) owns. And we have the classical pieces in it with werewolves or pack, vampire, and underpowered potentially more character that's learning all sorts of things.

It's a fun read with learning, betrayal, and more.

I love that Jade has her own thing that she does because she loves it and to relax, baking. Jade has her own personality. She knows who she is and is a little sassy when she's in tight positions, a reflex for her to stay calm. She is half witch and knows she's under powered. But things happen and people see other things. This book is from Jade's POV but we get the feel from what others say that there's more here, more to Jade.

There are murders happening and the leads the vampire, Kett, and were pack to Jade...because of the trinkets that are what she makes. Buuuut, there's something off about them. Someone's using her trinkets in these murders.

Jade is pulled into the dynamic of Kett along with Hudson and Desmond (pack). While searching for who the killer is, Jade will start to question who she is magically. She just attracts magical items, that's all. Right? Who's her father?

As things go along, things get darker and darker. Jade's unwilling to go along with the investigations, but she does because she feels a little responsible when her trinkets are found with the dead. With going along, Jade expands, learns, and grows in her strength and curiosity.

Who's behind all these deaths?
Sure, I saw who it was early on. But it didn't deter from the book for me. I really loved Jade and her interactions with everyone along with the actions of the story.

The writing flows nicely through the book, events leading to events along with leading us to who and why.

The audiobook is nice too. I found it easy to listen to and liked the narrators voice.

Will I continue the series? ABSOLUTELY! I already downloaded the next three books!

This is a fun listen for me. Morgen is out of her element, way out, and on an adventure. She's not backing down.

Morgen has inherited her grandmother's home and land just in time after going through her divorce and losing her job. The plan, to clean up the house and maybe sell it. When she arrives with her vizsla dog (I love this as I have a half vizsla dog!) Lucky, she's roughly greeted by a werewolf who threatens her. He's here to protect the land and Wolf Wood, that has magical properties. But when she gets to the house...she finds at her grandmothers... It's nothing like she expected. There's all sorts of witchy items, body parts in jars, old books, and wands. Wands around the root cellar.

Morgen is definitely out of her element with magic, witches, werewolves, and what else maybe lurking in the area. She's a tech person. But she has the family touch. She's a bit shy and even scared of everything. But she's not one to back down when she's pushed. And she gets pushed. Amar has become one of the few that helps her, and even protects her in time of need. She wants to help him too, for all he's done for her and not had to.

Morgen has to figure out what she wants to do. Is there a home to go back to? Or keep the land and stay?

Morgen has made a few enemies. But she's made one good friend. He'll help her and protect her. And I'm thinking this will bloom into something far more than friendship.

Bethany may not want to be in the family business of relic hunting, but she sure fits into it. And she's meeting new people that can be great contacts and help in the future.

Bethany's powers are growing, and she's learning her limits. She has a great group surrounding her that can help with her missions. Lugh her brother, Mathi her ex, Cynwrig her current lover, and Elgin a current/new lover. Then she has Sgott who is in charge of the night IIT and like a step father to her. All will protect her, and she them.

With working for the Council, hunting for the hoard that went missing, Bethany has a lot to look for. The next on the list becomes a shield and rubies that are stirring destruction and loss with those who are wielding them. And the destruction and body count seems to be around Bethany.

Those that have the rubies and are using them remember Bethany, but she doesn't remember them. At all. Is there something more to this?

Oh, yes. You read that right above. Bethany has two lovers, and yes they know of the competition. See it all has to do with the elf group and pixie group. But they can have fun together, but maybe not more. So why not have fun while you're looking for the one to spend your life with?

Bethany is learning more with each use of the knives, the codex, and the eye. These are some powerful relics and mix that with her magic and heritage. She's one bad*ss pixie.

The world is rich with history and fables. Gods, fey, powers, relics, and unknown creatures. I love seeing the things that they find and how dangerous they are.

I do enjoy this series for Bethany growing stronger and is independent along with the magical that shows up.

This book is Kat in hiding yet drawing attention from the Senate to find her. She learns about a disease that's been released on the humans by the kids that were in the lab she and her clan destroyed. Can she find a cure for those that are sick?

This book had more to it that felt like the story continues. There feels to be one direction with the story, not much in side stories to fill things out. We do have Kat finding "love" and happy for a moment. This is tied to the overall events and in the end felt convenient to me. Or maybe it's leading to a love triangle... That feel is potential as well.

The fight scenes felt a little better in this one as we get to see more in fights.

I felt there was something that happened that was a convenience for the characters.... Like how did one character get sick and another that is sick can be around people then... Again, I have to go listen to these sections again (if I can find them) to get answers. It's kind of vague whether one character touched anything or not to get sick.

I wanted so much to enjoy this series, but it just doesn't feel like it's for me. I'm sure others are loving it though.

I'm going to try the next book too. The book is good. The main character, Kat Dubois, is in essence my kind of main character. She's a loner and has a past that....well, could land her in jail if she was human and people knew.

Kat's a Nejeret, which is a demi-god(dess). She has done work for the Shadow Senate that she's trained for and used as a weapon. Her and her kind are long lived and don't age. With that, she's going to be around for a long time remembering her past.

So why is the book just good?
I felt like Kat came to a couple quick realizations that didn't seem to be lead up to in the events that happened. They were talked about, but didn't feel like the events in her life really made her see what someone else was telling her. Just like she was taking that persons word as her a-ha moment.

I'm one who enjoys a good fight scene. I felt like the fight scenes weren't detailed out enough or last like they should for someone who's to have her experience. I'm hoping more will come and this first book, being short, is the beginning to lead us into what's to come.

I did learn this is a series spin off from another. I'll have to go pick up that other series and see if it helps place some things that Kat was talking about in her past in this book. Though, I'm afraid that series is more a romance urban fantasy.... We'll see in the future.

This book does start the series arc for what's happening to her clan people and children. This is going to lead to so much more.

This was a Bonus Story at the end of Secrets of the Sword 3 audiobook. About 45 minutes of the total is this story.

This was fun seeing how everyone finds their way to Val's door. Each is different. Seeing them together at Christmas time is fun. They are an odd group of friends that fit together so well.

Zav has really come around to be a great partner and fiancé for Val. He's a little off the mark in how he does things, which make it funny, but he's got the right idea and his heart's in the right place.

Val's daughter... I find the way she's written is on the selfish side. I know she's a teen. I know Val's not been there. I know Thad has done the same thing as he doesn't know what to do. All she wants is money, and lots of money, for doing things. It's meant to be fun in the series as how Val responds too. But, ugh. She's gotten a bit better as the series goes.

Everything comes together... And everyone.

I started this series because I loved Val's determination and snark. And she still has that in the end. She's turned her life around in some ways, like how she handles the job she does. Sure, she's still an assassin, but not everyone she goes after needs to be exterminated. They can be handled other ways, as she's learned from Zav. And some of her adventures are due to Zav's enemies or target.

Val gets the training with her sword while seeing so many foes and relations from the past creep in to see her. It was fun seeing people from her past make an appearance in this book. And they fit in!

Val has people that are after her, because Ruin Bringer name and her past, while she's dealing with lots of family elves visiting. Along with her father, the King, and the dragons coming, including the Queen. All for her wedding.

I wanted to see how the wedding would turn out. Because, in Val's line of work, there's only one way this could go down. And I loved it! Fun for everyone! lol.

I enjoyed Lindsay's writing in this series and will come around to her other series' in the future. They are fun and snarky like I like.

Dimitri's art is causing trouble? A detective (human) is investigating one of his door knockers....that breath a burst of fire. Val is trying to track down a half dwarf thief that's stealing magical artifacts. And to find a dwarf that can help her learn more of Chopper, her dragon slaying sword. All while planning a wedding, which Zav has great plans for his dragon family (if they agree to come) and everyone he meets is invited.

Val has her plate full!

In visiting the Dwarf world, Zav and Val learn that all the dwarves have gone to ground, and haven't surfaced. While there, Val learns that there's more going on here than they knew. There's a lich, dragon? That doesn't seem possible...

Val finds her half dwarf thief, to learn that she may be the one heir of Chopper. What will Val do if she really is of the family that made the sword... will she give it back?

I like seeing Val and Zav together. Their relationship is fun. They trust each other in battle and fight on. That's the best part for me. Yes, Zav wants his mate safe, and knows that fighting dragons is dangerous for half humans, but he's proud of her abilities. And she fights! Val doesn't back down. I love this with Urban Fantasy. There's adventure and battles.

They may be in a relationship, but it doesn't distract from what's really happening in the world. We get the events as Val does work. I do enjoy that their relationship if fun with their quick clips. Val still teases Zav with things he's starting to learn. Also, Zav starts to tease Val back.

Dimitri and Nin have their own case to see about learning more. That would be a fun novella to see them, or Nin, out to learn more on what happened with one of Dimitri's customers and a deadly door knocker. This does get resolved in this book.

Val comes face to face with someone that's similar to her. She gets to thinking on being a half human and another magical heritage.

Things conclude with the arc of this book, but we have one more book to listen to. And the wedding of the century to see. :)

Val's not one to be...gentle about how she handles things. Especially a strange artifact that's poisoning wildlife at a farm. The magic from the artifact turns Chopper into a beacon for any and all magical beings in this world and others to come take it.

Val is great at fighting, and crowing stronger with her magic usage but there's only so many attacks at one time a person can defend against. Zav will help. Either scare them off or fight them off.

Seeing Zav and Val together, fighting and interacting, is fun. Their relationship is growing and their banter is fun as Zav is still learning sayings and things in the human world. However, there are still men that hit on his mate. Zav doesn't like it. He can't figure out why humans don't see the magical mark he's put on Val.

Willard points out that there's a way to show men that Val's taken. Put a ring on her finger...Marriage is the human way. Now, Zav is determined to find the perfect ring for Val. One with magic. However, Val doesn't think she's ready for marriage. Not yet...

Val has someone after her in all of this!

I like seeing how Val is starting to control her Elven magic and use it. She's gaining the ability to defend and even starting to learn something that could be offensive too. We also see that Val is growing in her personal relationships! We see her with her daughter and those who have become close friends. She still has moments where people are in danger because of their connection to Val, but it doesn't feel to be as personal as when the series started. These people know the risks and accept them. Heck, they even dive in to the risks to help Val.

It's so fun that people think she's weird. Val has her own way about things, and she's found the perfect person, erm dragon, that fits her. What she likes to do and say, they fit as a pair.

In spending all this time together, and then what Zav does for her, Val will start to see what she truly feels of their relationship... will she be ready to get married?

Val also starts to see Chopper, her dragon slaying sword, in a new light. Finding out more about this sword would be a great idea...

Val comes face to face with more of Zav's family problems. Politics mostly. Dragons are all about politics among the Dragon Court for power. And Val is just a tiny mongrel in the mix.

Val is moved into her new home with her new roommates... Dimitri, Freysha, and the vampire in the basement, Zoltan. As she feared, the house is full of mold. And Val's lungs aren't dealing well with the mold. She doesn't want anyone to know she has a weakness as Zav and others are seeing her as a warrior. And if Zav knew....would he still want her at his side?

At their first "family" dinner, where Val's ex-husband and daughter come along with others, things go sideways when a gnome rushes into the back yard and collapses.

Darn. Val really didn't want the supernatural world to know where she lived...

The trolls and dragons find her shortly after.

And a Dragon that's sent to mate with Zav. By his mother.
Val's potential love life might be over before it even gets started. If this mate can help Zav and his family with their standing on the Dragon Court...it might be for the best for his family. And he's an honorable guy like that. Right?

This book felt slightly slower for me. We learn more about Zav's family and their history, Val's father when here, and a few other details on gnomes and Nin's grandfather. Lots of great information about everything, and we need it.

I do love that Lindsay is blending details and people from previous books into this book. Nothing is forgotten and is helpful along the way.

I'm breezing right through these audio books and I'm ready to dive into the next.

Audio Book Review: False Security by Lindsay Buroker

Val is her own person and has bills to pay, like the jeep that was totaled months ago when that black dragon *cough* Zav *cough* threw it in the trees when they first met. So she takes a job as a body guard when approached. The pay was such that she couldn't pass it up.

However, Zav is not too happy about it. First, he wants to take Val to learn her magic so no one can compel her to do things, like kill him. Second, he doesn't trust that male.

Val... wins yet doesn't win. lol.

Val also is growing closer to the group of friends she's created.... Dimitri, Nin, Zoltan (if you want to call him a friend as a vampire that wants to taste her blood with dragon aura), and the group is growing.

Dimitri wants to open his own store with Zoltan and asks Nin for help. Val thinks about joining in too! All until Dimitri goes missing while looking for Zoltan who's missing too. There's a connection here, and Val is determined to find her friend(s) and stop the attacks that are happening. All while working as a bodyguard and going to another world to learn her elven magic.

Val is really coming around to helping other magical beings. She's seeing they aren't all evil. Though she may have some trust issues, she's open with those she talks to and shares that. And learns to trust or start to trust those around her.

I'm hooked on these books and love seeing Val come around from a solo personality to starting to like having others around her. She's come out of her shell so much with these people. She's not the best at conversations. Val brings things up in a snarky way that her friends know well and then the conversations evolve and the important topics are discussed.

A great corky group of people that fit together.

As for the love relationship with Val and Zav.... still waiting. Some steamy kisses but that's about it for this book and so far in the series. I'm good with that. I'm here for the kick butt action and snark of Val with her friends and Zav.

The narrator is the same through the series thus far and I'm glad. She's got different voices for each of the characters which helps me differentiate between them. Always great listening.

Audio Book Review: Elven Doom by Lindsay Buroker

Lindsay is building upon her world and characters with each book. She mentions something, and it will come up in how things are done soon enough. It may be in the previous book or current book, but it's all building and growing on itself. I love seeing authors do this. They are using the growing information about magic, world, characters, and more to keep the momentum of the story going while being grounded to the world.

Val is working hard to over come her worry for others, especially when the others are telling her they are going in with their eyes open and know the consequences. They are consenting adults.

That's what's important to remember as Willard and a crew of magical soldiers go with Val on a mission in this book. And there could be casualties, but they are aware and willing. It's NOT because of Val.

Val is trying to deal with Zav's sister that's come to check Val out as she's convinced her brother is doing the wrong thing with mating with a human, half elf. Remember that last instance.... Zav's sister is going to nose into parts of Val's life that she's not going to be happy about. Along with making Zav realize there's trouble with having Val.

I feel like the tables are turned on Val here slightly. Zav is the one who now fears he'll bring danger to Val that she can't protect herself from by claiming her. Val is a strong person but dragons are significantly stronger and could be a danger to her. Val sees that in just the few dragons that she's met already. And is Zav's sister any different?

But maybe, just maybe. Val is a weak link against Zav....

This book was one to learn a little more about dragons and see about Zav and Val looking at if they really want a relationship. They will go through a tough time in figuring this out, and maybe more to come.

We see Val fighting on her own with Sindari and Willard and others that are brought in. Maybe these could be new friends for Val in the future? And we see Zav fight as well.

There are simple reasons for Zav to leave the world or to be skittish with Val regarding trust. But they feel to fit well with the characters especially after events happen.

I'll be onto the next audio book soon! I'm having fun listening to Vivienne narrate these stories.
