Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles  /  Book Depository

My Thoughts and Summary:
This collection is of magic filled mystery stories of who or why set in the magic city where anything magical is possible, New Orleans. There is a vast history to this city that it makes it easy for the variety of stories here to come in all shapes and sizes. There is current mystery settings, historical settings, and historical references.

I enjoyed most of the stories in this anthology as they were my kind of reads with magic and action. There are some copy editing errors in this book, not as many as the first book but there are some. One thing I noticed is these stories are mostly in first person. Not a bad thing as we get to step into the characters shoes. But I also noticed a few of them tell about the characters at the beginning of the story instead of letting their positions unfold as we read, more an introduction of the character.

I know these are short stories and it's hard to do, but it's done and not done here -- Showing us the character and who they are through the story rather than starting the story with telling us who they are and what they do along with about themselves.

All these short stories have a complete end to the story. They stand on their own and you don't need to read other books to be caught up or to find out what happens.

Introduction: Hiding in Myth's Shadows: New Orleans's Complicated Relationship With Truth by Charlie Brown

Knowledge is Power by Rhonda Eudaly
Janna's on vacation. A theurgist on vacation in the most magically known city - New Orleans. She's touring the historical landmarks of museums, libraries, and churches. But in the Cathedral she gets a personal tour from a Priest she worked for when first out of the Academy. He shows her the heavily protected Grimoire. Then, the next day, she's arrested for stealing the powerful book. Janna is now determined to find the grimoire, to prove her innocence and keep people from being hurt.

I really liked this story. Great story to start the collection with. I got all my pertinent information with quick pacing. I was curious as to who took the grimoire and why. Then...why set up Janna?

We take a trip down the magic side of New Orleans into voodoo and also a brief interaction with a man who's a wolf, along with other creatures. The story is a mystery with quick action.

Blood Debt by Terry Mixon
Al Blake is paid handsomely to come to talk to the local mob boss of New Orleans, Sam "Silver Dollar" Carolla. If he takes the assassination job he'll be paid better than he ever imagined and more. Who wanted the dead man dead? And who has killed again?

This story is set in mobster days with a blend of blood mage, magic, and prohibition.

While Al is at the brothel investigating, another murder happens. The murderer is here! All Al has to do, find which person it is. Al is a blood mage and he uses his magic to find the assassin. You'll be surprised by who did it! I was. Al is then left with a choice to make, magic or his promise...

I was taken by this story as it was a turn of events and how All sticks to his word is so cool. It was even touching. Very well done.

Stigmata by Scott Roche
A vision drew Willie to this side of town. Hedge wizard Willie "Sparkles" Evans enters the Church of the Immaculate Conception seeking sanctuary. Someone, or thing, is chasing him. But what he walks into at the church... he's calling his detective sister now.

Oh, I love the history of the Vampire and a specific church connection here. Vampire history in New Orleans with ghouls and magic. All good things in one place, and there is troubles from it.

Another story I enjoyed the action and magic present in with the mystery of who.

Scott Roche even has me curious with Willie and Helen at the end of this story. I hope he does a few more short stories with them. I like what he brings to the table with them and want to see more.

All the Pretty Horses by Michael Ashleigh Finn
Josiah is joined by Baba as he's listening to the fine music of New Orleans. Baba has news that worries him. The Loa are missing. Baba wants Josiah to find his brother, Nibo, as he hasn't seen him in some time.

I find this story interesting with the Loa and Ghede. But...I did become a bit confused when Jo started working. I'm not sure what it was he did or how he "saw". I felt like there were missed moments for me to understand what's happening and why in the story. It could use more details to help us. I did like the idea and the ending though.

I like when Nibo shows up. Nibo is a Ghede and doesn't need a human rider, he can appear looking to be in his own body. Something is preying on the Loa and Ghede.

Everything Has Strings by Claudia T. Smith
Shugah shows up early at Violet's paranormal investigation office, which is unusual because she works the streets at night and sleeping by now. The local night girls are dying. Violet takes the case. When her friend suggests going to a revival that's in town, Violet sees a pattern starting and attends the revival to learn there is more going on than meets the eye.

We start right off with telling us who she is and the case, not letting us learn through events and actions.

What's interesting here is the magic. Violet calls upon Papa Ghede for help, asking of the connection she suspects of the deaths and the salesman, preacher. I like her magic. It's rough but believable because of that, it's not all flare. And the religion the man is preaching...well, it may be more than he thinks.

Last Dance in Storyville by Brent Nichols
George crossed Basin Street into another world, Storyville. George dances with the ladies of the brothel, but he has another mission. One of the beautiful woman here is a Merlin and she's hunting. And so is he.

We get the story of George's heritage and family mission to hunt the murdering witch along with his story here and now. This is very interesting as it's two stories in one that connect. The stories held my attention as I was curious to see how it worked out.

The city of Storyville has a bit of an Old West feel to it. I really enjoyed this adaptation and twist to setting in this book. The story was quick and to the point. Neat!

Normandy by Jeff Leyco
Sam has returned home for his brother's funeral. The casket is a closed casket. A friend, Mischa, said someone cut Shawn's brains out. Retrieving Shawn's items from the police, Sam finds a note in a pocket. But no one's looking into the note, or Shawn's death.

Sam has a whole history with his old home, and why he left. We get that story as well as the mystery as to what happened to his brother Shawn, and others that are dying just as gruesome deaths.

This story had the hints of all the great elements, zombie, wolves, magic, and mystery. We have the back story and set up. However I couldn't get excited about the story. I think it's the broken up scenes as the story moved from scene to scene we need to make this a short story. Some how if felt choppy in the transitions.

Glass Darkly by Paul K. Ellis
Jack reluctantly agrees to visit and help his brother Renny, at the insistence of Grandmama. Renny's chef has been missing for a week and Jack has the know how to find people. Jack finds himself a bit deeper in the magics of the world than he was wanting. And Renny too.

This story starts right in on Jack looking around the chef's bloody apartment. Now this caught my attention! I loved this start. Then the story seemed to slow a bit but when we got to the mirror, oh yeah. That was when it all came together. I liked the touch of magic in that mirror. There were a few details I would have liked a bit more concrete to help explain, but I did enjoyed this short story.

Oh, Grandmama. LOL! This woman is a hoot. She has a strong feel for family, and bad language around her. And she doesn't hold her tongue when she thinks her family should help each other, or watch their mouth. She comes across as the strong grandma that makes others smile while she's scolding her grandchildren.

What, or who, Jack and Renny come across would probably be a kind of fey type feel to them. The way Renny has gotten tangled up with these people, and Jack as well now, is interesting.

Casket Girls by Patrick Scaffido
(note: I think the next story should have come before this story as I would have understood what a casket girl was better for this story.)

Lucy wants her sister. But her sister signed on with a black magic gangster, Valdis Arcade, because she thought Lucy was dangerous to her. She thought Lucy was a zombie. Lucy is determined to get to her casket sister, one way or another. The spirits of the city answer to Lucy's call, because they believe in the worry for others like Lucy is worried. Arcade is a dangerous man, and the spirits know this all to well.

Lucy was neat as she can see memories in the ground. She can also see the ghosts clinging to Arcade's building. Death is her power.

The story was okay. I felt there was something deeper in the meaning here, but I just didn't get it. But it might be me as I didn't know the history of casket girls.

L'or Des Fous (Fool's Gold) by Lisa-Anne Samuels
Robert Livingston, U.S. Minister to France, is to secure the French colonies of La Nouvelle-Orleans as the newest part of the United States. Others don't agree with the President and would do anything to stall or stop the purchase, maybe even the residents of the colonies too. The $3 million to pay for the purchase has gone missing! It's due to the French government in days. Robert is set on the mission to retrieve the money in time.

Livingston meets and is lead by a seer and a wind witch in New Orleans. They are to work together with their magics to guide Livingston to the money. These two know each other and bicker like an old couple. The Wind Witch brings up the worry he, and many residents of the land being purchased, have. They fear they will end up in shackles.

As we travel with the seer and wind witch talking, it felt as though this is a historical story. As if the history was being re-written with magic included. Then Livingston learns a secret of himself and his family. It's magnificent to see the world through his newly opened eyes. There is so much more to the world. A paranormal essence is strong here.

A Gilded Fox by Emily Karnes
A local artist who's barely able to make ends meet is now selling items cast in pure gold. The Council is concerned where the gold is coming from and has sent Kasa with two others to investigate. They are concerned there might be an artifact around.

Kasa is more than she appears. But seeing her float through town on cloud nine and enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of New Orleans is part of the fun of the story. The 'artifact' is interesting to see what it really is. But I was a bit bored with watching Kasa take in the sights of New Orleans and the two men with her. The men had a small purpose, but were not as important to me. It was an okay story.

Blood On The Quarter by Riley James Keith
Alton Bently is woken from his warm bed and drunken haze on New Years Eve/Day morning. It's 12:30 AM. His partner calls with a dead body that needs their attention.

I liked the way this one starts. It caught my interest quick and made me smile. Alton's personality and take on things and the world is a hard look yet it's got a humorous ring to it.

This world definitely has different beings living in it and everyone knows about them. Alton can converse with the dead. However he only gets one word. The magic he can do is accepted and seems other magics are as well.

This was a quick read for me as I enjoyed the story and world created.

Butler's Last Stand by Michell Plested
Rafael and his partner, Jean, investigate a report of gunfire, though no witnesses heard it. When Raf looks around, he finds a head hanging from the roof. A ghostly head that disappears. He keeps seeing the ghost, until he talks to it.

As you guessed it, there is a connection between the ghost and Rafael. And the ghost has a need for Rafael's help. An undead power is trying to raise a spirit army to overtake and rule New Orleans. Rafael uses his detective position to help the ghost, but there is more than meets the eye and he has to take a step closer to trust with the ghost to help his city.

I liked the feel of the story as it felt like I was watching a movie and the main character was also narrating, telling me snippets of his past or relations as the story went. It's neat, the gift Raf is left with in the end.

Prompt Succor by Hugh O'Donnell
Terry O'Byrne's services are required by the Church. The Arch Bishop sent a letter, by way of ghost, for Terry to meet with him and help with a disturbance...

This was a neat set up. I liked the time in the church and the way Terry helps the ghosts. This was a nice story to read.

This story was set in the church and involved the church, but in no way was it preach-y. (We are in New Orleans, after all. Thank you!) This was well done. And one I enjoyed after the introduction of Terry.

The Sacred Marriage of Etienne McCray by Kristen M.Corby
Steve, a cop working the beat in New Orleans, tries to clear a street worker from 'her' corner. In doing so, he steps into a whole new side of New Orleans, learning he's special as well.

Now this is a story to end the book with! This started off with me a bit nervous of how it was going to go, this can be - and is - a good thing. It's a different start and one that had me curious. I loved the story here and the way the other world unfolds for Steve.

Steve sees things now. What happened for Steve to 'open his eyes'? Well, that is a bit... intimate and detailed in the beginning. Go ahead, read it. It's neat to see what Steve sees and takes on here.

Dirty Magick: Los Angeles

Edited By:  Charlie Brown

Publish Date:  November 20, 2013

Publisher:  Lucky Mojo Press

Format:  Print

Genre:  Urban Fantasy

Series:  1st of the Dark Magick Anthology series

Recommendation:  If you enjoy noir mystery stories, pick it up.

Synopsis:
"Dirty Magick: Los Angeles" is an urban fantasy anthology exploring the crossroads between magic and crime. Set in the city that invented noir, these stories comb the back streets and side alleys where the shadows are so sharp, they can shave you clean. Featuring such distinguished writers as Neal Pollack, Richard Rayner, Justin Macumber and Terry Mixon, this collection, edited by Charlie Brown, presents a whole new approach to urban fantasy.

Purchase At:
Amazon  /  Barnes & Nobles  /  Book Depository

My Thoughts and Summary:
The stories are all a mystery of the old feel blended with magic. Tommy guns, Dames and Dolls, and the noir old feel to detective case solving. All mixed with magic in Los Angeles. So many different takes on magic in the big city of Angels.

As I read, I enjoyed the stories that were shared here and the worlds created. I did notice that it seemed there was at least one copy edit error in every story. But I was able to over look them.

The Forbidden Pose: A Matt Bolster Yoga Mystery
Bolster is called to come to Silver Lake by his sometimes poker buddy and former partner from LAPD Homicide. A woman of about late twenties is dead in her home, frozen in her yoga pose like time stopped. Someone is teaching the forbidden poss to people that don't know what could happen.

It was cute with the yoga take. However, it wasn't my favorite of the stories. The mystery was an old feel of Bolster hitting the shoe leather and finding who's teaching people the pose and why. There even felt like descriptive words were in wrong placement as the describer is a few words from it's focus.

Cougar Witch Plot
Megan has found nothing helps her anger. She's made a lunch appointment with a witch who's suppose to be astounding at what she does. The jaded Megan wants the man to suffer.

I enjoyed this one from the starts. No it's not because I'm female and this woman wants revenge on an ex. It's the witch that caught me. She is the real dean and doing her magic on Megan. I did, however, get a kick out of Megan and what happened to her ex.

An Eye For An Eye
Al Blake is hired to assassinate the D.A. while giving his speech on the courthouse steps. His unknown client requested Blood Magic. Blood magic requires the mage to be close, but Al likes to be there just in case...

A magical assassin, blood magic, mob mention... Oh yes, I'm curious.

This has an "old" feel to the story. I love Al's feelings on hurting woman. I really enjoyed the turn of events with this story and the flow of it.

Almost Angels
Tom's on the case of a dead girl carved with intriget swirls and designs. There's a wizard that's draining people of magical power from their soul. Not able to get the sight of the girl from his mind, he goes to find the true killer.

I like the feel of our main character here. He gives a feel of himself in the story so I feel the emotions with him. I enjoyed this quick story of magic and protection.

Sign of the Times
The Mara demon he's got, and digging her prison, is more than he knows. A blast from the past as he learns about him, and she already knows about him.

I like the way this one starts and the connection between the capture and captured. There is a turn of events in this story and the end wasn't what I expected. Rather neat.

That Old Hill Magic
At the bar watching a female demon sing, Detective Darcy Winters is on the job.

I like the world hinted at here in this short story. I'd be curious for more. Bluesy ad futuristic blended with supernatural. The fight is my kinda read!

The Hounds of Tartarus
Chuck has crawled out of the ocean and made his way to L.A. for help from Hess. Now chuck is ready to avenge his death, and get his money back from Vince.

We get the story from Jose - an angel of death. He takes his time with those that are dead, to get them to their peace and move on. Cool twist to Chucks life after death. I like the draw of realization and stages of grief.

Well done!

Call It Intuition
She's a big band singer, who sees shades when emotions run high. Billy, the trumpet player of color, is killed and her abusive boyfriend is on the case. But Kyle, a patron of the club, is more than he seems. And Greg Maloni's crew is helping with the funeral. So what really happened to Billy? Why?

She sees shadows, shades that play out scenes. Others don't know she sees them. She learns what happened to Billy. I really enjoyed this one as it's an old time mystery in a jazz age. I liked the time frame picked for this story and the ability our main character has.

Hearts at Rest
Frankie is on a murder case. A man was killed at the film studio. It's a List killing with what is seen. But this killer is a mystery as Frankie and his crew know of no Lister this powerful.

We see a new creation here. The term Lister. It's a turn used for the division Frankie works in that refers to those with abilities.

Oh I loved the ending to this one. What we learn of the characters...Cool! There is a fae twist to this tale.

Mr. Mean
I started but ended up skipping it. I just couldn't get into it.

Tainted Hooch
Kincaid's called into a young actresses home with the young actress looking well beyond her years in death.

Starcrossed
A djinn who owns a special club and a wizard that finds his way past the trips to get in. Miss Maurus's establishment becomes a tea house when the LADP - wizards - shows up looking for a missing girl.

Oh this was a lovely tale. I enjoyed the djinn and the 'bottle' feel of the club. A touch of love in this story from the history we learn along with the story. Two stories in one with the history and current. Lovely.

Seeing Dead People
Kelly brings Jet to the crime scene. Jet specializes in ghosts.

This is no run of the mill magick. Not even Black Magick. It's Dirty Magick!

This case takes us into unexpected moments. Dark, dirty magic is present.

The Winds
Jackie is on the case where his old friend was murdered. Everything scattered and blown around. The Santa Anas winds were strong...

A full mystery here. I think maybe the longest story in the book. Full with characters and explaining.

Looking Forward To... (105)

There are so many amazing books already on the shelves and new ones coming out.

For a list of books yet to be released I'm looking to get, you can also look on my right Sidebar at the ever growing list titled Desired Reads - just scroll down. Of course there are tones of other new books to come out that are amazing as well, but these ones are part of series I have already started or for one reason or another caught my eye (and haven't seen much on other blogs yet). But I will highlight one here each week.

(mentioned in order of Release Date then Alphabetical if there are more than one book coming out on the same date.)

Next Book Is...

A Kingdom's Fall
The Light of Epertase #2
By:  Douglas R. Brown
Due Out:  August 1, 2012

Yes, this one is already out.  I've been slacking the last few weeks.  But I'm curious to see where this interesting fantasy world goes.  And with Rasi and his...attachments.  ;) That is meant in 2 different ways. lol.

Also, if you check back for my Freebie and Deals post, the first book of this series is currently free to celebrate the release of this one. :)

Goodreads Synopsis:
That which survives the initial assault may yet die from the infection left behind.

In the destroyed country of Lithia, the former Gildonese leader of the Lowlands, King Fice, has violently assumed the throne, filling the void left by the Tek destruction of the country. His unnatural powers of sway have become more potent and his influence is far-reaching.

The Tek invasion has also left a void within the kingdom of Epertase. The war has tested the once-great people and, with the venomous words of men Queen Alina considers friends, Epertase descends into revolution. Alina barely escapes with her life.

Once again, the kingdom needs a savior.

And once again Rasi will be forced to unleash the darker part of himself in order to save the woman he loves.

All is not what it seems. Victory may still mean defeat. The war for Epertase has only begun.

A Kingdom's Fall
#2 in Epertase: The Light of Epertase
By:  Douglas R. Brown
Due Out:  August 1, 2012

This series as a review book for the first book, and I found I enjoyed it.  It's definitely a fantasy read, but one with a few new items and some oil engines that had to be fought in the war for their land.  I do look forward to seeing where the trilogy goes.

And looking for information about this one, I find there is another short story!  I do think I need to get it, as it too is free.

Now this cover and synopsis I found on Douglas R. Browns site.  He posted it back in February, so I hope nothing has changed since then.

Book Review: Love, Death, and Loneliness

Love, Death, and Loneliness

By:  Douglas Brown

Published By:  Smashwords

Publish Date:  March 2011

Format:  eNovella, 29pgs

Genre:  Fantasy

Series:  A Short Story in The Light of Epertasian series; Book 1 ~ Legends Reborn

Recommendation:  Yes, if you like a new fantasy world.  And even if you read the first book, read this as it gives more of Rasi's history, and his feelings.

Book Synopsis:
Rasi hates his mountainous exile almost as much as he hates the man who banished him there.  "Love, Death, and Loneliness" takes a peek into one of Rasi's days in his brutal solitude.  His memories of a time gone by is all he has left to survive the loneliness.  And now, even those memories are more than he can take.

First Sentence:
Rasi lay next to a small fire on the cold stone floor of his cave home.

My Thoughts and Summary:
It's a bitter cold winter in the mountain cave.  Rasi is starving and aches through his bones.  The only thing helping him pull through are the memories of his desceased wife, his friends, and his hatred for the man responsible for him being here.  Though, these memories, happy or not, are starting to become to much for the broken man.

We see a few memories of people Rasi likes to think on.  One is his beautiful and now passed wife.  A fond moment.  Then we see a moment where Rasi shows his strength as a leading soldier, where he leaves with one other close friend to save their closest friend who's held captive.  It was nice seeing these two men with Rasi, in their glory again.  And to feel the bond these men have.  Then, in the end, we see Rasi struggling with his straps.  The struggle of who's in charge.

In this short story we get a glimpse of the fantasy world Rasi resides in.  We get a feel for stature his friends and fellow soldiers see him at, and the King's thoughts on him as well.  In the end I felt for Rasi again, and remembered the book.  I'm ready for book two to come out.

If you've not read the first book, that's okay, read this free short novella to get a taste of the world.  The only hints to the book are: Edonea, the straps, and something with Elijah.  If I hadn't read the book first, I would have hints to what was to come, but not spoiled in any way.  It might even make you curious about what is to come with getting a feel of a few important characters in the story.  But having read the first book, this refreshes my memories of it and I'm looking forward to the second book.

You can find Love, Death, and Loneliness for free on Smashwords in any eformat you need.

I read this for my own enjoyment.

Book Review: Legends Reborn

The Light of Epertase:
Legends Reborn

By:  Douglas R. Brown

Publisher:  Rhemalda Publishing

Publish Date:  August 2011

Format:  ARC

Genre:  Fantasy

Series:  1st book in The Light of Epertase series

Recommendation:  If you like your classic feeling fantasy with the magic and wild creatures with the war sitting at their doorstep.  Do pick it up.  Easy fantasy world to read.

Book Synopsis:
Since the dawn of time, the Light of Epertase has determined when the throne was to be passed from elder to heir.  For more than a thousand years, the Light's decision had never been challenged...

Until now.

When a ruthless army advances on Epertase, The Light determines that corrupt King Elijah is no longer fit to rule - his daughter, Princess Alina, is the kingdom's only hope for salvation.

And then evil men violently abduct her.  Epertase's fall appears inevitable.

But all is not lost, for Alina has a secret lover lurking in the outer mountains; a long-banished warrior willing to bring down armies and King Elijah himself to save her.  His name is Rasi and he prepares for blood.

Deadly men plan to sacrifice Alina for The Light of Epertase that lives with in her soul.  Rasi plans to kill all who try.  The kingdom's fate hangs in the balance.

First Sentence:
The year was Matthew 1012.  Rasi sat on the edge of his bed with his palms pressed against his temples.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Rasi a loyal soldier to the king and loving husband and father-to-be who suffers nightmares of his bloody war memories who's life changes drastically when he leaves the celebration of the Prince's advancement and promotion by way of a shortcut to get home to his soon to be angry wife.  Rasi awakes to find his tongue removed and tried, found guilty of murder for the woman he tried to save.  Sentenced to death by way of rashta, a large wolf like beast with seven tentacles on it's back.  Rasi escapes and learns of the ill fate brought down on his pregnant wife, and swears the corrupt King Elijah will pay with his life.  Rasi hides in the forest and lives out life there waiting... Eight years later Rasi saves Princess Alina when her and her fiance are in the woods to late.  Grateful and finding a friend, Princess Alina visits Rasi through the years, and through these visits Princess Alina and Rasi fall in love.  Then a blood thirsty people come by sea looking to kill and take all the black blood in the ground from Epertase for their machinery.  At the same time the signs are appearing that The Light has chosen to pass soon, from King Elijah to Princess Alina, and someone is desperate to take advantage of the weak moment when The Light can be stolen.

This sounds like a lot going on in this book.  And there are but it all flows together nicely.  We meet the main characters in the beginning and take a quick journey with them through the tough parts of their lives as they come in contact with each other.  This span of 12 years happens quickly in the beginning, setting up the characters to where we need them to be and how they all met and react to each other.  When Alina is captured we start to learn about the contact with this blood thirsty mechanical race of people determined to kill off the current residents of Eperase and take it for themselves.

The chapters are shorter ones, so they are easy to read a quick section when you are on the go or can read for five minutes.

To me we have the feel of the classic fantasy feel along with a few new twists to the abilities present in the characters.  I enjoyed this one for that feel.  I like my fantasy and the different takes on the characters and creatures present.  The abilities coming together in a group:
~ mind speak which is present in one very special person
~ people with a liquid metal on their skin that can be hard metal when hit
~ people who use machinery and oil in a time where horses are still used
~ creatures are dangerous and deadly large and new ones to us ~ including the ones on Rasi's back.
~ a touch of magic force
~ and we have our rising magician here too

As you read through the book you realize there are a few Legends coming to shine at the surface and they are nothing like the pretty boys you may think of. They are tough and ugly. But even as mean as they can be, they have the biggest hearts for their home and the ones they love. I think one of my favorites is Simcane.  I have to say when I saw that cover I was really curious what kind of people I would be meeting here.  But quickly in the beginning I learned of Rasi and those tentacles on his back.  I found I enjoyed learning about him.

We get to see through different views and different sides in this book.  Though most of it is focused around a few characters we do get to see the opposing side from time to time.  Which is nice as we get a feel for those characters and people as well with what is going on around the world.  With war laying on the outskirts of Epertase we are anxious to get the Princess's kidnapping resolved in time for the war we are sliding into.  I feel we get a close to the book, but there is still more to come.  I'm curious to see where the next book goes.

Very nice fantasy read here.  Easy to read and understand with all that is happening.  I'm very curious to see where the trilogy goes and ends.
Book 2 ~ A Kingdom's Fall - due out Fall 2012
Book 3 ~ The Rise of Cridon - due out Fall 2013

I would suggest this fantasy read to those who enjoy fantasy books.  It's easy and quick to read through.

I received this book for an honest review from the publisher.

This book qualifies for the Speculative Fiction Challange hosted by Floor to Ceiling Books.

Who? What? Where? (34)

Who are you with? Where are you at? What's happening?

Share with us just a little bit of what is happening in the book you are reading, right where you are now.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.

(This is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )

I'm with Dillon, his mother, and soldiers leaving the school yard.  His mother just burst into the school house to take us away before they came to get them, but she was to late.  They are already here.  Dillon knocked the superior out, but they have started fire to the school house.  Strange thing, the other kids are brainwashed and never looked up from their books!  They will die without a care.  Even though we made it out, we are under arrest now.  But there is something very, very special about Dillon and his mother.  They aren't from this area of land, and I'm curious what's special about them.

I'm with Rasi who just met his fellow soldier and close friend Terik at the edge of his property.  Both are heading to a Military function to celebrating a few good things; the Princes rising through the army ranks, and maybe the good Rasi being offered the position of Captain now open.  But Rasi is the type more comfortable fighting with the soldiers than leading them.  Sounds to me like he might be prime material for the leadership position, if it wasn't for the bloody memories.
