Author's Favorite Quotes Young Adult, Merrie DeStefano

I wanted to include authors of books I've loved.  And what better way of including them then having quotes from the books?  A great way to introduce you to the books and share a bit from them.

This is wonderful hearing Merrie talk of her book Fathom.  Really was a breath of fresh air with the Celtic legend mix to it and the selkies.

Telling a Story, Line by Line
By Merrie Destefano

First, I want to thank Melissa for featuring FATHOM today and for inviting me to write a post about some of my favorite lines from the book.

The interesting thing about writing a book is the fact that the story is told, line by line, concept by concept. Every book has a theme, even if the author didn’t consciously incorporate one. Line by line, a book should reinforce its central theme, it should drive the story forward, and it should reveal characters.

I have my five favorite lines from FATHOM listed below, as well as a brief description as to why these lines in particular mean so much to me and to the story.

SETTING/CONFLICT:
Something startled me awake, some shifting of our house, beam against beam, old wood crying out in the damp sea breeze.

This line sets the stage for what will become the main conflict throughout the book: the fact that Kira is haunted by her past and what her mother did. Kira believes that she sees her mother’s ghost and this event triggers the deep emotions she will have to deal with on a daily basis.

PERSONAL LOSS:
When my grandmother’s voice rose and fell, her tongue thick from liquor, I imagined that I saw my sister and my mother standing just outside the circle of light cast by our windows onto the lawn.

Tragedy struck early in Kira Callahan’s life, when her sister was murdered by their mother who then committed suicide. In the line above, Kira is both mourning that loss and imagining a different ending to that incident. This loss helped shape Kira, making her a shy introvert and also making her a target for the mean girls at school. This on-going scenario will play into her coming of age when she is finally able to stand up against those girls, an act that will declare she is strong enough to fight her own battles and that she is different from her mother.

LOVE INTEREST:
I ran my thumb along my chin and my lower lip, wondering what it would feel like to kiss him.

From the beginning, I wanted FATHOM to be a coming of age story, so certain elements had to be included. One of these is first love—this is the love that we’ll never forget, no matter how old we are, and it’s something most of us have in common. The line above comes from a scene where Kira realizes that her feelings for Sean, the boy next door, are no longer those of best friend.

COMING OF AGE:
The ocean was like heaven and the four of us, bobbing up and down, were like flesh and blood angels in our Calvin Klein briefs and bras.

Another key element in a coming of age story is a ritual that symbolizes the transition from childhood to adulthood. Although the main character is oblivious to what is coming, the line above is the beginning of a ritual that will change her forever and change the way she views the world. As a result, Kira will have to confront the demons from her past if she wants to grow and survive.

CONFRONTING YOUR DEMONS:
A sigh rushed up from the basement, carrying the scent of dust and cobwebs and mysteries unsolved.

At this point, Kira is starting to look for answers on her own, no longer depending on her father or grandfather to guide her. She’s striking out on her own, trying to uncover family secrets that will help her understand who she is and what really happened on that day when her sister and mother died. Discovering this hidden truth is something she must do if she hopes to survive and if she wants to protect her remaining family members from a dangerous curse.

Book Review: Fathom

Fathom

By:  Merrie Destefano

Published By:  Author

Publish Date:  October 1, 2012

Format:  eARC, 317pgs

Genre:  YA fantasy, Sea Fantasy

Series:  1st book

Recommendation:  Yes, a sea legend comes to the land folk while it's still in the making.

Synopsis:
Everything is changing...

Turning sixteen can be hell, especially if everyone in town thinks your mother killed herself and your sister.  All Kira Callahan wants to do is swim, hang out with her best friend, Sean, and ignore the kids who torment her at school.  That is, until one day when she gets invited to a party.  For three minutes her life is wonderful - she even kisses Sean in the driveway.  Then somebody spikes her drink at the party and some girls from out of town lure her into the ocean and hold her underwater.

Kira soon discovers that the group of wild teenagers who have come to visit Crescent Moon Bay are not as innocent as they seem.  In fact, nothing is as it seems - not the mysterious deaths of her sister and mother, not her heritage, not even her best friend.  And everything seems to hinge on the ancient Celtic legends that her mother used to tell her as a child.

First Sentence:
I never believed in ghosts.

My Thoughts and Summary:
Caleb's people are of the sea, make homes of shipwrecked ships and have legends of humans.  One of the legends is still forming, a girl still working and growing through her own legend his people talk about.  Caleb is curious about this legend and when his friend and his sisters betrothed returns home he says he saw her, and a crew of them decide to go and see her for themselves, even though they have to swim through their predators territory, the Hinquememem.

Kira is a young girl turning sixteen and maturing, maturing in ways she never even knew and well beyond that of a normal teenage girl.  Kira feels she looks more like her murdering mother than ever before, and misses her dead sister.  She loves her swimming that helps calm her days and mind.  But Kira's world is good as she shares her first kiss with Sean but is about to get turned upside down after a party where she has her drink spiked and a few girls play a cruel joke on her by trying to drown her... she thinks what happens is all a hallucination, from the drink...or was it?

We start with Kira remembering the first time she saw a ghost, her mothers ghost and what happened to her mother and sister, yet makes me curious to the whole story with them and the Celtic legends they believe and listen to.  In school there are those who whisper the same rumors at start of each year, about Kira and her mother and wondering if she's like her mother, crazy.  But we are coming to the close of the year and the thoughts are still there.

The descriptions of the oceans touch is poetic!  The details of the scent, look, and feel are amazing and I can almost feel it on my skin.  I almost feel as I'm there.  Then when I realize I'm not, it makes me wish I was standing there at the ocean, on the beach.  Makes me crave the ocean as much as Kira does.

The chapters rotate between Kira, learning of her, her mom, birthday, and friends, and Caleb, learning his world and adventures to see Kira.  The chapters are shorter length in pages and consist of complete scenes. I really like this.  It's easy to have a spot to stop on the run (and for young adults between classes) yet I am in want to keep reading and know, learn, more of Kira's and Caleb's lives and how they will connect.

My only thought is Kira considers Caleb a friend in the end after him helping her once and then in the end again, also keeping her secret.  Kira feels a connection with Caleb with every eye locked gaze, but I didn't feel there was as much happening between them to consider him such a close friend.  I do think Kira is a kind soul and should act the same way she does with him, but to say he's such a close friend...I don't know, I didn't really feel it.  But the Legend created here, Wow!

Wow!  The legend created here.  An amazing Celtic legend that grows to come to pass as we read, in a story that will seize your attention.  Full of selkies and monsters of the sea.

I'm very curious to see where the series goes from here.  There has to be more to come, because I want it. lol.

Who? What? Where? (86)

Who_What_Where_zpscc5f6f1f
Who are you with? Where are you at? What's happening?

Share with us just a little bit of what is happening in the book you are reading, right where you are now.

Just a tiny taste of what's happening, remember try to not give spoilers of the book.

(This is a new meme I'm going to try and will tweak as I go. And please don't laugh at my lame attempt at drawing. ;D )

This Week:

Kira and I are walking out of her house in Crescent Moon Bay heading to school on a Monday...  A Monday after that party on Friday.  She's already not popular, and after what happened, she's afraid it will confirm to the others she is crazy like her mother was or maybe they saw something when she was by the ocean.  Then there's that parent meeting with her English teacher over that journal she, like the class, had to write in every day for a month and turn in.  Oh, what's going to come of the day?  I already hate Mondays...

Teaser Tuesday (138)

Teaser Tuesday
is a weekly event

Here's how it works:

Grab the book you are currently reading (anything at all)
Open the book to any random page.
Share 2 teaser sentences from anywhere on the page
Please Make Sure They Are Not Spoilers!
(Don't Give Too Much Away)
Just enough to pique our interests

This Week:

I picked up Kira, covered her face with the blanket so no one would be able to see her, and I headed up the steep hill avoiding the stairs.  It was going to take me a while to climb up, bot at least I knew that I wouldn't run into any humans along the way.

Looking Forward To...(113)

There are so many amazing books already on the shelves and new ones coming out.

For a list of books yet to be released I'm looking to get, you can also look on my right Sidebar at the ever growing list titled Desired Reads - just scroll down. Of course there are tones of other new books to come out that are amazing as well, but these ones are part of series I have already started or for one reason or another caught my eye (and haven't seen much on other blogs yet). But I will highlight one here each week.

(mentioned in order of Release Date then Alphabetical if there are more than one book coming out on the same date.)

Cover and Description Release: Fathom

I've found a new Young Adult book that will be coming out October 1, 2012.  And I think you all would enjoy it.  It sounds like it has a Celtic blend and the sea is included as well.

After you read the description of the book jump over to Merrie Destefano's blog to read the first chapter.  I will say after reading this first chapter I'm curious; about Kira the main character, her mother and sister, and what is to come from her heritage and sea!  Yea, one to check out.

What do you think?  Okay, like I promised there is the first chapter up on Merrie's blog for your reading.  I will say it caught my eye, and makes me want the book even more.  I love the sounds of the sea and mysteries to this story!

Does Merrie's name sound familiar to you?  This is the first YA book she has published, but she has 3 adult books out:
Feast  (Harvest of Dreams #1)

Afterlife  (The Resurrection Chronicles #1)

Waiting for Midnight (anthology of short stories by Merrie)
